Leopard Geckos are some of the best pet animals you could ever keep. Reptiles can make awesome pets and all sorts of lizards seem to be becoming more popular to keep as pets for children and adults. Weather it's your first or fiftieth pet reptile, Leopard Geckos make great cold blooded companions. These medium sized pet lizards only get about 7-10 inches on average and weight in at a mere 50-80 grams usually. Giant Leopard Geckos and Super Giant Leopard Geckos are outliers of course. The space requirement is also very easy with a minimum size enclosure being a 20 gallon long tank or about 30x18 inches in floor space. If you wanted to go larger with a 40 gallon enclosure or even bigger that would also be a great idea! To keep your new friend at the correct temperature I recommend an overhead heat source like a halogen light or maybe a ceramic heat emitter with a stone under the heat source to catch the warmth. You can also heat the enclosure form the bottom with heat tape or a heat mat on a thermostat if you choose. Offering hides on both sides and a humid hide to help the animal shed and hydrate is also a great idea. Bioactive enclosures are amazing for Leopard Geckos and I think these types of gecko setups really bring out natural behavior in your gecko friend. The diet is also simple and feeding all sorts of insects like Crickets and meal worms and Dubia roaches and black soldier fly larvae is super fun to watch your gecko hunt. These amazing little lizards are so fun and really there is no wonder Leopard Geckos make such amazing pets for beginner and advanced reptile keepers. Stay tuned for updates on Cheech and the gang and don't forget to smash that subscribe button!

They are my dream pet my cousin had one when I was around 6 or 7 years old, he allowed me to hold him and I instantly fell in love!!! My mom said no to snakes and I still do what I want cause they never come upstairs so I'm probably gonna get a small snake I can easily hide. Also don't be like me 🤣I'm crazy. But I also still live with my mother cause I'm disabled. I'm hopefully gonna get a house if I get on SSI and maybe have a friend stay with me. Maybe that's something you could do eventually.

@@ItsMasonMoney IAnd anyone else thinking this- for the sake of the animal, just make this joke as a joke, but don't actually really try to hide a snake or other pet. They need things that would be very, very hard to conceal, and if you happen to be without your own reliable funds and transportation you might not be able to provide veterinary care if and when an urgent need arises. Also it will be found and you will probably lose it with no chance to get another. There's a pretty good video on this channel I think about slowly convincing your parents to allow a pet, and sneaking would wreck your chances, whereas the slow approach and proving responsibility might change their minds eventually. I hope it does and you guys can have reptiles!

This happened to me with a tarantula. I was staying in town for a winter break back in college, and was happy to look after other students exotics while they went home. I ended up with the tarantula all spring semester and summer break. She was super low maintenence, so it just became my routine to look after. Most of a year later, the student reached out to me. Turns out, they had a medical emergency over winter break and was in the hospital for much of spring semester. They were super apologetic for the radio silence, and took back their invert. I'm just glad that I didn't have to decide if I was up for keeping it or not xD

i raised my leopard gecko in a 20gal when he was a baby and moved him to a 4'x2'x18" (90gal) as an adult. he absolutely uses all the space, he scurries around, and i installed a second level of platform for him to climb. he loves climbing and has never fallen over, and he has six different hides to choose from. imo the 4x2x18 is the best tank for an adult, and now i put him back in his 20gal whenever i clean his regular tank, and he absolutely gets angry whenever i move him into his small tank. he tries to climb out of it and is generally unhappy in that small of an enclosure. i've been looking into setting up a bioactive enclosure for both him and my ball python since viewing your channel, thanks for all the tips :)

Thank you for another fantastic vicarious reptile experience Adam! ( This is the new category for your vlogs....the word vlog just sounds cumbersome) Your filming just keeps getting better, in spite of animals being one of the hardest things to film. The attention to detail is so impressive. I got to my first reptile expo in the last few months. Within the first 5 minutes I was holding a leachie 😲😳. I had only heard "Satan in a sock" comments about them. I had never held an ectotherm. They are cool to the touch, which seems obvious with their classification, but when I only watch vlogs and haven't used all applicable senses, it was strange. (Yes, there was a caveat that I did not taste the Leachie) have the bullfrogs and snapping turtles in my pond, but no interior reptiles. This Leachie was captivating. The price was equally captivating, but after researching them, and the speck of dirt they call home literally on the other side of the world in the middle of nowhere, I get it. Leopard geckos may be the perfect alternative "get this, not that" reptile. It's not comparing a dragon snake to a ball python, but I thought it was applicable. Thanks again!! All boxes checked, like, comment, sub, and Patreon! Woohoo! Score!

Got my 7 year old girl in a 40 gallon breeder bioactive and she loves it! I also use a halogen light and a dark rock to create a basking spot. Halogen lights are apparently better then heat mats. They are super easy to care for and they don’t seem to lose their tails super easily unlike crested geckos. In terms of care requirements they are super easy to care for as long as ones getting them are okay only feeding insects. Also be prepared to kill plants and you may get fungus gnats with a bioactive they are great but aren’t for everyone.

Thank you so so much for this video- this is the most informative and interesting one I’ve found so far! Tomorrow I’m off to the library to do more research! This gecko is in for a treat!

Great care guide. I'm looking at freshening up my leopard gecko's over the winter, this will be a big help. BTW, Dumerils Boas are cathemeral too. Judging from the noise I hear from under my bed (their enclosure is the bottom 'bunk' of my bunk bed) at 3am, I can attest that this is true... for mine at least!

I think they'd have to be really stressed to drop their tail. I was so scared with my little guy when I first got him, literally wouldn't even touch his tail, but they're fine. If you're not grabbing the tail and pulling it about or handling them roughly they shouldn't drop it 😊 They're such wonderful little characters , don't let that put you off getting one 🦎💚

I absolutely love this care guide!! I got my leo a couple of months ago and this video really helps me out. I do have a question though. My leo has been a bit of a jerk to me the last couple of weeks. He bit me twice out of nowhere and didn’t let go. He is the sweetest boy when my boyfriend handles him but with me he just loses his shit. I do the exact same things as my boyfriend and I’m even the one who always feeds him, cleans his enclosure and overall spends the most time with him. It really breaks my heart… I’m really trying my best and his temperatures, enclosure, hiding spots are all perfect so I don’t think that’s the problem. I’m really trying to be patient but I have no clue what’s wrong… please help :(

@@skullknightsfanboy8991 😂😂 he ignored her!! I don’t own one (want one tho), so I can’t really help. However It feels like you are taking good care of it, so there is no problem with it I think. Some people wash their hands with something strong before handling their gecko and their gecko bit them cuz of the smell I think (So dont wash ur hands with a strong odor if u do xd) Furthermore it might be the way you grab them? Or you wake them up while they are sleeping? (When I was a kid and dumb pet owner my hamster bit me cuz of that) and last reason might be in my opinion that you have extremely cold hands and ur boyfriend doesnt? Anyway, I would give it time. I mean you have enough time with geckos 🤔

I love the direction that reptile care is going towards, and I love that you have nuanced opinions and experiences! I think it's so important to have channels such as yours which showcases how you can grow and evolve within the hobby, even with such a well known reptile like leopard geckos. I have grown in this hobby so much thanks to my leopard geckos. They started in ten gallons with a very minimalistic set up (as all of the care guides suggested awhile back), and are now in 40 gallons. Each has a naturalistic set up, including loose substrate, UVB, and overhead halogen heating. Not saying they can't have a healthy life without those things, but I have seen first hand the behavioral changes in them. Such an awesome thing to research and evolve our understanding only to be rewarded with some awesome innate behaviors and thriving reptiles!

I just rescued three leopard geckos and one of them (has vitamin deficiency) immediately ran to the water bowl and chugged until he vomited. He’s fine now, but it just goes to show just how dehydrated they can get if you keep them on the wrong bedding (they were on dry reptibark) and with improper humidity. That being said, the only time I usually give water - other than after rescue - is when I give them a wet mossy bowl/hide during shed. :3 Good info here, as always! ETA: My rescue with MBD started eating after 20 minutes of UVB. She hadn’t eaten in weeks and was fading fast, according to the guy who dropped them off. She is resting and eating regularly today, just 12 hours later. ✨

because of you, I got my first leopard gecko today! the setup is pretty bare bones right now, 20 gallon, paper towels, heating pad, some hides I made out of sandwich containers, and some moss/fake plants. but over the next few weeks I plan on a 40 gallon, lots of plants, logs, leaf litter, everything I can to make him comfortable and live the best life I can give him.

It’s good that you’re planning on upgrading! It’s good that he’s on paper towel for now, new reptiles should be quarantined on paper towel for at least six weeks (ideally three months) to monitor their health. After, a suitable loose substrate such as a soil/playsand or soil/sand/clay mix is best for digging enrichment. I’d also switch to overhead heating. A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer or dimming thermostat is the most natural and beneficial option, Arcadia’s deep heat projector is the second best option.

@@nightinggale6470 I have a small heating lamp from an old tarantula setup that I'm using to give some extra warmth until my next payday when I can get a proper big boy lamp.
