Curious, for your dart/gecko cohab what space requirements would you recommend? I want to try a cohab but the things I keep right now are not cohab-compatible in any way, not even with others of the same species. Would there be things setup differently due to cohabitation or just setup for the two individual species needs? Panther chameleons. ●Like a dog and a cat wrapped up in one animal personality-wise. ●Pretty forgiving to keep so long as you're supplementing/lights properly. ●Slow, easy to handle, and will come up to climb on you (whether or not you want them to say hi) if you put the effort in. ●colours all the colours ●entertaining shedders ●Not expensive foodwise and different behavior for hunting different prey if you're free feeding. ●Not as fragile as they're made out to be *IF* you get cb from a responsible breeder (I've got 13 chams currently of various species and in 15 yrs of keeping Chameleons have only needed vet care 3 times, and each time was less then 100$. But I do take them for bi-yearly vet checkups just to ensure they're as healthy as I think they are). ●trainable to do tricks, simple or complex, with a *lot" of patience and bribery..much bribery. Some can be taught more then others depending on individual intelligence and food motivation. ●handleable, again IF you get cb from a good breeder and put the effort in. ●These guys can actually form individual based bonds rather then it just being a food bond. They can and will show preferences to who they interact with, when, and for how long. And have favorites. ●intelligent. And an idiot. Often simultaneously. One of mine has figured out how to unlatch his enclosure and can do some rather complex tricks even were he a dog (such as jesus lizard and play dead. Play dead is still a work in progress)...he will also sometimes grabs his own tail then freak out because something has his tail. Downsides. ●initial costs are expensive. I spend about 1000$+ on enclosure and setup without automated misters and without factoring the animal itself. That being said, a lot of those costs are one time costs (such as the enclosure itself or branches) or infrequent (such as bulbs or plants) ●they require effort to get them to a point where they are happy to see you and want to be with you. Unlike a lot of reptiles where you can just take them out and sooner or later they grow used to it or that you can bribe to tolerate you/handling. ●they need proper supplementation. ●without a cleanup crew maintenance can be a bit of a pain since they will use *all* of their enclosure and you can find poops in some interesting places. ●if you don't like kids, don't get a chameleon. It's like owning a toddler, but the kind of toddler that looks directly at you as they attempt to put a fork in the electrical socket. ●being arboreal they need up and down space. They also need space to tuck under plants to cool down or hide so they need some side to side space. In a 2x2x4 enclosure they will use every inch of space at some point. And they will sometimes use it in the weirdest ways possible. ●females are waaay more work.

Tegus are awesome but not all of the are chill and cuddle bugs so always be very careful if you go to handle a tegu you don't know. I've ran into some very aggressive tegus. If they weren't handled enough growing up they can be very aggressive and very dangerous to your limbs and fingers. Never buy a adult tegu unless you've handled it several times on several different occasions. They have a incredibly strong bite. Stronger than a monitor and you could loss a finger. While they can be super chill and affectionate I definitely wouldn't recommend it to a beginner and I strongly strongly recommend you get one that's very young. Stay clear of adult tegus unless your a very experienced tegu owner.

The way Kamp Kenan keeps his lizards is the best in the yt community in my opinion but saying that he has the space to keep them in the big outdoor enclosures. I really want to get a lizard I'm a beginner to the reptile hobby, each time I think I've found a lizard that will be happy in the enclosure that my husband and myself are refurbishing someone will tell me "oh no not good for beginners". That puts me back at square one in trying to find that perfect lizard.
@CelestineTheConfused Жыл бұрын
honestly, no reptiles are "perfect" beginner pets, just choose one that fits your lifestyle the best. For example, if you travel a lot you could get a reptile that eats weekly or biweekly. If you get stressed easily, find a sturdy reptile that won't get sick if its been in the room temperature for a few hours Just my two cents
@loriw2661 Жыл бұрын
I agree with the Asian Water Monitor being at #1. If I had one, I’d keep him like Kenan keeps Slinky. I have the property for it but I don’t have the money it takes for the enclosure and the Aquascape water feature, that is a necessity for a WATER monitor. 🦎❤️🦎

But over all thy are really easy to care for once you got there habit all set up

Uromastyx and skinks would fit a list like this I'd think and with skinks you have the added bonus of different sizes depending on what you want and/or the space you have to work with.
@kaderblast5194 Жыл бұрын
Honestly for alternate suggestions I'm really a big fan of dumerils (aka brown roughneck) monitors in the 2nd to last category, they have a lot of the features of asian water monitors but in a smaller package while not being as tiny as ackies or timor monitors. Shame they're not captive bred more.
@authenticthreads Жыл бұрын
100% Uromastyx! A bit more to know about care than Beardies but set up cost is the same, even if animal cost is more. Easier to feed because no live food requirement and a bunch of sizes and colors to choose from. Absolutely the most underrated pet lizard. And honestly, if we gave them their due there would be a lot more captive breeding efforts, which is absolutely essential to their long term survival. They’re not endangered but they are poached for both local food and for the pet trade and wild caught animals seldom acclimate well in general.

Given the finances and the space to do it, I'd love a black and white tegu. There's a lot of good information about keeping them. Target training seems like a must. They are so smart you have to watch to make sure they aren't training you rather than the other way around. I can't imagine a better large lizard to handle than a well socialized tegu. I think a good option for people looking for something between leopard gecko size and bearded dragon size (or if you’re just looking for something more tropical, or green, or slender) is a green keel bellied lizard. I have one and he’s a joy to have in the house, we don’t handle him although if you raised one as a baby I’m sure handling could be a possibility but they are very fast. Tokay geckos would also be an option between those sizes although I understand why some people don’t want to keep one.

Already about 12" tip to tip. 4-5" body. Lot's of fun. CB from CB parents. So pretty even tempered. It's already willing to crawl onto my hand or arm. But it goes where it wants. I don't pick it off me like I would my Leo. Gotta coax it back into the enclosure when I've had enough. Plus, at this age I still have some concerns about it screaming, "Fweeedomm!!!!" and just taking off. It could easily climb places I can't go.

Theres loads of underrated species most people never consider or have even heard of as alot of pet/reptile shops dont stock them often like Coleonxy (Banded Geckos) from the Americas that are variable from humid rainforest to dry desert dwelling depending on the species. Theres Conehead Iguanas (Laemanctus species) they're medium sized like Basilisks care wise just a bit smaller. Tons of Anole species with some being just as colourful as some Chameleons and then you've Agama species like Uromastyx again loads of colours and no livefood needed for them or instead of Water Monitors but you're still after a med-big lizard that likes to climb and swim there is Chinese Crocodile Lizards, Australian or Chinese Water Dragons, Sailfin Dragons, Caiman Lizards. Monitor lizard wise theres Pygmy Mulga, Storrs, Kimberly and Pilbara Rock, Ridge tailed (Ackie), Timors, Green, Blue, Black, and Yellow tree monitors. Oh and another alternative to Tegus are European Eyed lizards Adams mentioned before they dont get as big are much more cold tolerant than Tegus being able to be kept outside in most of the US, EU UK for at least part of the year they're colourful too and don't just eat bugs.

I don’t know much about Chinese Cave Geckos so I don’t wanna say the same goes for them, but honestly for Adult Leopard Geckos and AFT’s, they should be in a 40gal breeder. Yes they can do okay in a 20gal, but EVERY time I’ve seen one moved from a 20 to a 40, they start thriving. A juvenile starting in a 20 is absolutely okay, but when they’re getting big, please please please upgrade them!!

Perhaps you can do a top 5 for each of these categories? Rankins dragon is the best small pet lizard in my oppition. A bearded dragon but half the size, twice the fun. :) A beardie the size of a leopard gecko. Unlike the gecko's you mentioned Rankins are day animals, so you will see them during the day. How do you rate them compared to the gecko's you mentioned? I love my Rankins. They have the personality of a beardie but pocket sized and they are day active. I know beardies are great as medium lizards, but personally I would buy an Ackie monitor in this categorie. However it is same category as bearded dragon and you chose one per category. But would you say that Ackie monitor is the second best in medium size after bearded dragon?
