Leopard & Hyena Fight Over Impala While it Tries to Run Away

A family of tourists spotted a leopard hiding behind a thick tree, ambushing a nearby unaware herd of impala. The leopard makes a perfect catch, but, the alarm calls coming from the impalas attracted a hyena! The hyena saw this as an opportunity to get a free meal. Although, the impala was pregnant, so the hyena was not only getting one meal, but two.

This one-of-a-kind sighting was captured by 43-year-old secretary, Charlene Swanepoel, while on safari with her family and friends in the Kruger National Park, near Letaba Rest Camp.

Charlene tells Latestsightings.com the story: “On an early morning game drive near Letaba, we were treated to some unbelievable action. We were privileged enough to experience this very exciting moment, where a gorgeous one eyed leopard waited patiently for his moment to catch an impala.”
“Successful in his attempt, we were in awe at what we saw, yet another highlight awaited us, when suddenly a hyena appeared out of the bush and stole the impala from the leopard.”
“Old One Eye and the hyena fought each other, but the hyena overpowered One Eye multiple times. The poor impala thought that this was his chance to get away, but luck was not on his side.”
“The one-eyed leopard moved away and kept his distance. It was in that moment that we heard another fight...could it be? Another leopard on the scene!”
“Old One Eye fled into the highest nearby tree. And the younger male leopard waited patiently for some scraps that the hyena may leave behind. The hyena enjoyed his meal, and then picked up the impala, leaving some scraps behind and walked into the bush.”

Hyenas have loose skin like honey badgers and thick neck, they can manure their neck easily and are very durable creatures. Even male lions struggle to kill adult Hyenas. They have survived maulings from male lions. Its very tough to subdue the hyena without getting bitten by it, that's why we don't see lioness killing Hyena. Lioness is much bigger and powerful than Jaguar or Leopard. So u can imagine how tough hyenas are.. in a fight to death Jag or Leopard might kill a Hyena, but they would be seriously injured in that process, like one good bite from hyena can fracture their leg

Goodness, I was not expecting that! 2:23 the Hyena decided it wanted to be a midwife. Hard to watch sometimes but such is life. Is it worth trying to kill such a dangerous meal and perhaps sustain an injury which could be fatal (blood loss or infection). This is 2 individual animals. The Leopard overcautious, the Hyena undercautious. There re other videos where it's one one where both species are carefull to not fight more than a second. One ends w the Leopard going up a tree w the kill. Also we don't know if the cat sees other Hyenas coming. Basically its the fight in the animal. I had a dog that won a fight vs 3 dogs, but was evenly matched against an area German Shepherd. My Siamese cat took apart said German Shepherd so badly that if it saw the cat it would immediately head the opposite way.

To those disappointed that the leopard backed down to a hyena I would say this: Leopards are beautiful, athletic, and powerful animals, they have a speed and agility edge over the hyena and could drag that antelope up a tree in a way that the hyena could only dream of, they are also much better jumpers. So why does such an ayhletic and powerful animal run from a hyena? Well, first we have to realise how formidable a hyena is too. Its jaw strength breaks bones as well as slicing easily through flesh. Even lions can be intimidated off of a kill if they the are outnumbered by hyenas - although a fully grown male lion is usually too much of a challenge. But I think the most important thing here is mentality. Note, the hyena has zero fear here. It just runs in without a moment's hesitation, and when it gets the antelope it is confident enough to turn its back on the leopard and ignore it - clearly it does not fear retaliation. If you watch enough leopard vs hyena videos you will see that the hyena is usually the dominant animal. You see, if the leopard engages with the hyena and it gets bitten just once, it may be a lethal injury or damage it so badly it slows it up so it cannot catch its prey. So it has to be very careful - one bite could end its life. Hyenas do not face the same threat. As pack animals they capture prey by running it down rather than by speed. Besides which, even if the hyena is unable to catch prey it will still get to feed when the pack does and, thereby, have time to heal from any injuries it might sustain. So we see that the attitude of a leopard and a hyena to fighting are different. To a leopard it is always life threatening but to a hyena injuries incurred during fights is just another hazard of life that it is quite prepared to tolerate in order to survive. Maybe a leopard could kill the hyena with its bite but it would do so most successfully with a bite to the neck - unlike a hyena which is less discriminating. The leopard uses such a bite to kill to eat, not to fight. That is not to say a leopard could not kill in a fight by biting to the neck but would it even occur to the leopard to do that? Animals do not have a human level of awareness, whereas we might think to extend the use of a successful killing technique to a fight, an animal is much more instinctive so, if the leopard is not actually thinking of killing the hyena to eat it - and it wouldn't do this because it is not a natural prey item for it - it is not necessarily going to even think of using a bite to the neck of the hyena. When it comes to fighting, pack animals do it all the time, just think of humans for example. But solitary animals like leopards only fight very occassionally and that is to defend territory against another leopard. Often the means of fighting another of your own species is not the same method as used for killing prey. So, whereas the hyena is well used to fighting by indiscriminately biting, the only fighting a leopard is designed for is that which it would employ against a rival in a territorial dispute. Such fighting will have leopard specific rules to try and avoid the leopards literally killing each other. Hyenas, on the other hand, fight within their pack on a regular basis to assert dominance, etc. So they have much more experience of everyday "scaps" which will not necessarily take the form of occasional ritualised fights but simply nips and bites to keep rivals in order. As mentioned above, leopards have reason to fear injury so their fights will be designed to assertain who is dominant without risking severe injury. Hyenas have different imperatives. When they fight for dominance it is ongoing not occasional, they will cause as much damage as is necessary to keep rivals in check. A nip might do but nasty bites might also be inflicted if necessary - with both combatants knowing that they will probably survive even quite severe injury because their survival is not an individual effort but a collective one. Thus, the more brutish hyena is better mentally prepared for a generalised fight, whereas I don't think the leopard would even know where to start in fighting anything other than another leopard. This would be especially true if the leopard is a female that is not even likely to engage in border disputes. My guess is that the survival instinct of a leopard is based on running towards its prey but running away from virtually any threat significant threat because its speed can help it avoid any potentially hazardous situation. After all, if you can avoid injury with the help of your speed, why engage with that threat? In conclusion, the hyena has less fear of a fight and is used to fighting very frequently. Such fighting is less ritualised and simply takes the form of biting to punish, intimidate, dominate, etc, within a pack. This method of fighting will be just as effective against a leopard as against hyenas so leads to it having confidence and being the dominant animal. The leopard, by contrast, is an excellent killer. But it is not really a brawler. Where is does fight it is usually just to settle the occasional boundary dispute. Even then, since it is so important to leopards not to get injured, the fight will be somewhat ritualised to reduce the chance of each animal receiving an injury that might needlessly result in both combatants death. If a leopard was to try and kill a hyena in order to eat it, my guess is that it might be successful. In such cirmumstances it would use its superior speed and athleticism to get a neck bite which would also serve to hold the hyena in such as way as to neutralise the hyenas main threat, its powerful jaws. Thus, by attempting to kill the hyena, the leopard not only increases its chance of inflicting maximum damage on its opponent, it has the equally significant advantage of gaining control of the hyena's head and thereby avoiding the bite that could end its lif However, when the hyena steals the leopard's food the leopard does not suddenly view the hyena as an alternative meal, instead it merely wants to get its original prey back. As a consequence of which it has no method to employ at its disposal. Unlike the hyena that frequently steals prey, a leopard usually catches its own so, once it has lost its prey to a dominant animal how does it even set about stealing it back. It is not appropriate to fight it like it might fight another leopard in a bounday dispute, and even if it did fight in this way, it would probably lose, for reasons I have given above. It is for this reason the leopard is relatively submissive. It is not in a situation that gives it any confidence in its abilities. The hyena, on the other hand, is on familiar ground, stealing food and fighting for dominance is what it does. Hyenas will sense their dominance in such encounters and come to realise that they can waltz in on a leopard kill and steal it with little need to worry about the consequence - hence the hyenas casual dominance in this scenario. The reader will be able to tell that I have given this subject some thought. If you like what I have written, please give it a thumbs up. However, I lack the on-the-ground experience of the actual animals concerned to be absolutely confident of my assessment. I think that humans put their interpretation on things but animals have a completely different perception so it is difficult for us to understand their motivations and therefore the real reasons for their behaviour. @@heliosf2080 Yeah but not by a lot, while the hyena has only one way to win, which is trough biting in close range, while the leopard can also do scratching from “mid-range”. I’d imagine two scratches to the face could make the hyena think about quitting if he doesn’t want to risk getting his eyeballs gouged. Scratching from distance could be a low risk&high reward move in such situation compared to biting. That’s also why cats can sometimes fend off dogs, wolverines can sometimes fend off wolves, mainly because they could scratch and bite while their bigger opponents could only bite, two weapons vs one weapon. The leopard should have tried scratching from distance as its advantage imo.

There's videos of leopards trying to counterattack a hyena bullrush them with paw swipes with no effect because they have loose skin and are very robust. infact, there's studies that the hyena is a more robust animal than a leopard. There's tons of footage of hyenas bum rushing leopards while paw swipes being ineffective.

Almost every single one would in its weight class. Cant think of many animals that could beat it straight up that are a similar size.
