One of the most emotional, sad and deep nature footage I have ever seen in my life... The baby getting unexpectingly back on his feet despite being badly wounded to the head due to the lioness bites, his willingness to hold on to his short life pictured by his irregular steps, then this final scene as tired, wounded, seemingly abandonned by his once protective mother, the baby began slowly to drown under a heavy rain. Even the weather played its part while at first the sun shined on a healthy, galloping calf surrounded by a protective herd before turning into rain while the baby's fate was sealed. This footage deserves to get an award...Masterpiece.

Nature is cruel and is a race towards survival of the fittest. They must pass many tests from surviving in the womb to surviving the first days of life when you are target for all predators to young age to adulthood. Only the strongest survive from womb to old age, unfortunately. Those who survive to old age breed many times and produce able offspring as strong as them. Unfortunately, the young calf was not born as a strong calf and this is why the calf and mother got left behind from the herd. This is one of the first tests of survival after birth.

Not just giraffes. There are many many video examples of gnus, zebras, buffalo etc that in their haste to protect their baby will trample, kick and even gouge the little one. And what is worse is the parent only adds to the pain and suffering of its baby when there is really no way, for example, a mother wildebeest is going to be able to protect its offspring from a full grown lion, or more lions. Nature is not pretty and is heartbreaking to watch, but then you need to look at it in context. One animal, young or old dies and the animals that eat it get to survive. As well as the a animals that were not attacked live longer to breed to make more of themselves and some will be food and on and on just like it has been for millennia.

There's a raw honesty coming from the relationship of predator and prey animals that has been mostly lost on us humans. While it is horrifying to put the events of wild life in a human context, you have to remember that all parties involved don't have it easy at all as giraffes are powerful animals that have been known to seriously injure or even kill predators as big as lions. Both fight for their own lives and those of their kin, both don't know any other way to live than to fight and hope to see another day. Gotta respect that. Not that I advocate for veganism or any other naïve idealistic rethoric for that matter, but we could do better as a species to provide a humane dignified treatment to the animals we afford to consume. We are what we eat, after all. Another reason I respect the practice of ethical hunting: Kill only what you're going to eat, don't make the prey suffer, and help keep the animals environment pristine and their population sustanable so other generations of humans can partake in the most honest profession an apex predator like us can take. After all, being on the top, we are expected by ourselves to show a benevolent mastery over the world, not a tyrannical domination over our lesser brethren.

It's an animal. Its primary instinct is to survive (see what the baby was trying to do). The mother giraffe can go and have more babies, to fulfill its secondary instinct. The animals protect their offspring as long as they can because it requires a huge amount of resources. Once it is hopeless, they must leave them and try again.

That was a gut wrenching, master-clip. Both incredible filming, and painful to watch, and so compelling. Then the baby giraffe, rising to it's feet, struggles along, and gets to the water. I wasn't sure how it would end. Was it weak and giving in. Or was it finding comfort in the water, that perhaps the flowing water was soothing it's injuries, and it would gain strength to continue on. Then, gracefully it goes under one more time...

@liquid_metal Жыл бұрын
@@davewalmash6849 yes because giraffes think just like humans... It was desperately trying to survive, went into the water to escape the predator and lost blood/energy to the point it couldn't even keep its neck straight. It then drowned.

We live in a world of TV land and happily ever afters...I was expecting a happy ending. I forget that this is nature and survival of the fittest. I'm gonna argue that it was the mother's... fault... if not that, then the mother's tactical decision. She could have fought - running was pointless. I'm guessing she wasn't very attached to the newborn... better to try again next year than get killed along with it.
