No it's not a bad animal. Apparently it can be concerned for other's wellbeing. An photographer was diving with his camera on the arctic and a leopard seal interpreted him as some kind of sea animal and the seal proceeded to try and feed him! When he didn't eat (the camera being his alleged mouth) the seal became visibly concerned for him and tried to help him eat. That was so very very sweet, I think. I know they eat other seals or penguins or whatever, but everyone has to eat.

Hi friends, great video; leopard seals are incredible! Our crew recently filmed another threat that leopard seals suffer: the decreasing number of krill. Even though we always connect Antarctica with whales, penguins and seals, they all depend on krill. You even said how leopard seals filter krill with their teeth. But our team wanted to show how this tiny animal that keeps the whole ecosystem working is in danger. Not only because of climate change, but also because we spent decades harvesting them.
@StoutShako2 жыл бұрын
I didn't know we ate krill! How can we help?
@FarmerFpv2 жыл бұрын
This comment is misinformation. Krill is not abundantly eaten by humans. Climate change is not what most people make it out to be, it happens all through history there is no stopping it. Krill is still the most abundant species in the Antarctic.
@heinzarniaung2915 Жыл бұрын
Didn't know we were harvesting krill. What did we use them for?
@rutufn0596 Жыл бұрын
That would be nice to see a doc on this! You know the majority of the forms of life are decreasing lately, except for rats, mosquitos, giants crabs, lion fishs and some insects (we call them pests), and some plants (we call them invasives), and us of course! But yes the fishing of the krill is way underestimated, and very unknown from the public (as a lot of others "nightmaring" human's activities). For those who didn't knew, the krill is use to feed industrial animals for human's food (like fishs, shrimps, cows and chickens...) because of the amount of proteins it's contains, and the harvest is estimated in the thousand of tons per year (since a decade) at least, yes it's quite a "modern" industry, it's mostly due to the decrease of others fish species, more easy to catch but overfished. But, I guess that as we barely manage to "protect" the whales, we will not be able to protect their food source Aka the krill, either way the whales, the seals, the fishs and the krill (...) still have harsh days in front of them (and right after, we will too of course).
@XSemperIdem5 Жыл бұрын
I believe the Short-tailed Shearwaters also go to the Arctic waters to feed on krill after they arrive on Phillip Island, Victoria, Australia from their migration that starts in Alaska, U.S.

While their normal range is in the Antarctic waters and as far north as the sub-Antarctic islands, it's not uncommon for lone individuals to venture further north and visit Tasmania and New Zealand. Usually a couple of times a year, there's sightings of them resting for a few days on beaches in southern Tasmania where they'll linger a while and then return out to sea again. While I'm yet to encounter one yet, the photos of them sure look intimidating and are often accompanied by notices from the Parks & Wildlife Service to give them space and spectate from a safe distance. There's the skull of one on display in Launceston's Queen Victoria Museum & Art Gallery (Inveresk) which I've seen up close in person and can say that it's basically a Grisly Bear in a seal costume. The jaw alone could easily swallow a human head, and the massive muscle attachments at the back of the skull are no pushover either. Beautiful and awesome animals that definitely deserve respect.

We were anchored in Bahia Paraiso, visiting base Videla, a chilean research base down there. Its freaking amazing, you just walk from the dock to the base's compund through a s,all walkway, while there are penguins nestin not even 2 metres away from you. The base's personnel were chill af, they even threw a bbq party with us, so there we are, chomping on this absolutely delicios bbq'd beef, and i just notice through the window how in the bay next to the dock the penguins suddenly start bailing out of the water and the ones that remain, instead of having that streamlined one direction only jumps to breathe, suddenly get all erratic. I point this out to one of my sailor buddies, and he just answers with a '' yeah that's probably a leopard around there''. As if on queue, i see one penguin surface, weirdly slow, and only then i notice the red stains and the crippled, dislocated looking wing on it. seconds later, those dinosaur jaws clamp on it from under the surface and thrash it around like a ragdoll. was that the end of the meal time? Nope. 2 hours, 3-4 penguins got Popeye'd right there. After that i read that these swimming chainsaws dont form packs because of effective they are on their hunts, literally over 90% success. After witnessing that carnage, i beleive it.

How about the kangaroo mouse for the next animal? They are small vicious predators that howl like a wolf during a full moon.

Daniell lost her hands in a tragic leopard seal attack. That's why she's afraid of leopard seals, and why she's gesturing with her sleeves now, apparently.

So cute when dry and NOT in the water Almost hard to imagine they are killers especially with their babies ^-^

Great video. Around about 1993 I came across one on cape LeGrand beach just east of Esperance Western Australia, it was alive but had many puncture wounds, presumably from the local sea lions. Initially I thought it was dead but when I approached it from behind it reared up and swung around showing me a very impressive mouth. Later in the day we passed by the location again and it had gone.

Danielle, you crack me up. I liked your leopard print top and couldn't stop smiling at how you wore the sleeves over your hands like a little kid. This was a great episode. Thanks!

@@johntechwriter Cool it with the snark. It's a fun video about leopard seals -- not a PhD dissertation.

They're regulary seen in New Zealand despite it not getting all that cold. They suntan on beaches and even piers around boats and people. That one well known video filmed here is of a Leopard Seal attacking a car.

Fantastic, leopard seal is a really magnificent predator. In the next episode can you do finally a video about elephants (africans and/or asians ones)? However, wonderful episode, as always.

I've seen leopard seals resting in the harbour near where I live. Happens every so often all along the coast. You know one is around because of all the lost cat posters.
@porschecollector7272 жыл бұрын
They hunt cats? How does that happen?
@Neion82 жыл бұрын
@@porschecollector727 My guess? House cats on the roam walk up to them to see what they are, poke them with a paw and then *SNAP* as the seal bites and then eats them. Domestic cats often don't know when they should be afraid because they think of themselves as predator not prey despite their small stature.
