Woman died more often at giving birth in history than we realize. Can you imagine if you should deliver a twin or triplets in that time?. It must have been horrible. The Habsburgs were an extreme case, but inbreeding wasn’t really that uncommon in Europe. Especially in smaller places. Cousins, second cousins and so on, were common. People hardly moved out of their place of birth. My country has digitized ancestry records now, and I found out my maternal line has lived in one village since the 1500’s which is a reason why half the cemetery has their last name. Through some geographical travels, my maternal line met my paternal line sometime around the 16-1700’s at least once, and basically all of the descendants of the original settlers in 800’s are related to one another. When I follow my ancestry back to the 11-1200’s literally almost all of my direct descendants are related somehow, with some new Scandinavians coming from the mainland on occasion in the 15-1600’s.
@spencerf.62942 жыл бұрын
Yeah but new people moved into the villages so they didn't always marry their cousins and they married people from other villages too so they didn't do that disgusting stuff
@jamiemohan20492 жыл бұрын
Look, everyone is inbred. Cousin marriages are common all over the globe. Only in the west have they recently become stigmatised. But we are all related. Do you know your 5th cousins? Probably not, and if you did only a handfull. It is expected distant unknown cousins will marry and have children. Happens all the time.

Inbreeding wasn’t only in the RF. I’ve done extensive ancestry research and was shocked and appalled when I first came across a situation of an uncle marrying his niece. Further down the road, I have read of many 1st cousins marriages and this was amongst the common folk so that probably was why the people accepted the practice.

Look, marrying cousins ONCE is genetically speaking fine ( yes yes, _brought to you by the University of Alabama_ ). Marrying cousins who are children of cousins for half a dozen generations is genetically speaking an ansolute clusterfuck.
@maryfreebed98864 ай бұрын
It's not fine, though. It's inconspicuous to the casual observer, but even third cousins marrying once by mistake is enough to leave a mark that wouldn't be seen on the children of total strangers. My parents accidentally did that without knowing it and we three are considerably worse off than the children of my sister, who married someone who wasn't related to her in any way.

I think it's probably a bit of a sensationalist spin to say he killed his first two wives 'out of passion'. It was pretty common for royals to try very hard to conceive an heir, nevermind the fact that they were young (at least in the first marriage) and it's not so uncommon for young couples to want to get it on a lot. But also what was not uncommon was early death and health problems related to pregnancy, on top of already having compromised health due to inbreeding.
@unknownuser_992 жыл бұрын
First wife also had a thyroid disease goitre and died of bronchitis.
@5th_cellar Жыл бұрын
I know it wasn't your overall point, but somehow, I doubt the young wife in that first marriage (or any of them for that matter) was very enthusiastic about 'getting it on a lot.' Good in bed or not, can you imagine being a teenager and you get married off to this fugly guy pushing 30? And he's not only your uncle, but it's his kink to be reminded of that fact in bed where he's relentless about banging you.

Advances in science throughout the ages (especially in genetics) lead to more people becoming aware of the dangers of inbreeding, including royals. Of course royals still inbred, but tried to keep it to first cousins only, the uncle/niece thing stopped occurring as frequently. Charles Darwin’s thoughts on evolution and genetic fitness were another component that made inbreeding less popular, although unfortunately and ironically he married his own cousin thus producing progeny who were at a genetic disadvantage.
