All about the money and classisme... In the European high sociaty you can see clearly that the 'old money' have very short and tick leggs in comparison to the rest of the body. Often an lip overbite or horse teeth. Short thick vingers and a very white pale skin. Now even the royals from now are marrying outstanding and stunning woman from outside the old gene pool. You can't but feel sorry for the kids who are very often born sick. I was working for a family who claimed to be offspring from the Habsburgs and I remember that one baby was born 'bad'. They turned the neck of the baby and claimed it was still born. The mother was so cold and heartless.. She said: We need strong baby's to keep the bloodline a live. She went on with her life like nothing happend. The next child was born healthy and she gave it directly to a nanny!!! She did not tend to the wants or needs of the child! All for the bloodline!

Arthur died six months after the wedding and Catherine firmly stated that she and Arthur never consummated the marriage. It was a strategic political alliance so the pope was asked to give a dispensation for Henry VIII to marry Catherine.

She was noted as politically ambitious and wise by contemporaries. She declined the proposal of an Archduke (and future Emperor of the HRE) to mary a count for convenience. Her brother gave her considerable money & her new husband eventually converted to the Catholic faith. This was during the 30 Yrs War, which when concluded, diminished the powers of the Emporer & granted the Habsburgs more autonomy in their lands & titles since the Emporer title itself was elective.

Thank you for mapping this family tree. I am related to just about all the people in this tree. I would like to say Marie A.'s mother Maria Theresa did not have the Habsburg chin. Maria Antoinette didn't really inherit it either you can see this in the death mask. She did have the slight receding upper lip and fuller bottom lip. Actually she had a bit of a weak chin. People focus too much on the extended form of this defect on the more pronounced versions in her family tree. The current Habsburgs have Marie A. chin, it is a weak chin with a receding upper lip. I and members of many my family inherited the weak chin fuller bottom lip and slightler smaller upper lip. My smallest cousin is Maria Antionette's twin in appearance she in turn is near identical to her mother my first cousin but again we are from mostly from the very top of Maria Antionette's tree. Our ancestors also intermarried numerous times in the Catholic Church requiring dispensation etc. this was somewhat normal in Royal, Aristocratic and landed families. I would have difficulty even now figuring out how many times my own parents are related as distant cousins. The leading families would marry cousins and even in 1 case a niece to keep power, land and money in the family. If pushed I would have to say my mother and father are related at least 5 times through various distant family lines. Clearly they did not know this when they got married however there we are. My mother's family however knew that everyone they married was basically a distant cousin cousin dating back to the 15-1600's. After awhile everyone is going to be a distant cousin in this type of situation. I would say the all the Royal families, aristocrats and landed families are distant cousins etc. at this point. This style of Hapsburg chin can be seen in Otto von Habsburg's family in the link of the funeral I will post here. His son looks like my male cousins and his daughter looks like the younger cousin of mine who could be Marie Antionette's twin my cousin is just paler than Eleonore granddaughter from Emperor Otto von Habsburg. I would LOVE to see you use the current Habsburg's pictures for Marie Antionette and her family as their lips and chin match the paintings almost perfectly they did not inherit the Mandible prognathism only Georg did which is very slight, the rest have Maxillary prognathism like we do. Yes. Henry VIII had to get one to marry Catherine of Aragon because it was incest to marry one’s brother’s wife. I think the Biblical interpretation was based on Deuteronomy. That was one of the issues that caused the pope to refuse a new dispensation allowing Henry to divorce Catherine and marry Anne Boleyn.

I highly doubt it to be honest. I mean, the whole point seemed to be to keep(hoard) titles and assets as close to the family and allies as possible. The fact that most were very much aware that they were marrying their cousin in some cases makes me believe they saw the incest aspect less relevant than the wealth hoarding aspect. From my little Google search, it seems incest was still considered disgusting and immoral , especially among common folk. But...the choices get narrower when you're a noble looking for someone of suitable rank. (Please note, I am not an expert and I've done a very minimal search on this)
