5:09 Non-sexual nudity? Titanic's one boob was hella sexual. It was a romance scene and Rose was trying to be sexy. Non-sexual nudity would be a female character getting an injury in their abdomen, their shirt is off to recieve treatment, and some nip gets in the frame. But its a high tension scene just like any other "oh no a protagonist has been injured". Or a character is changing their clothes and there's not a well positioned chair between them and the camera. They're just existing and the framing doesn't make it anything more.

I love “Drag Me to Hell”. It really is underrated. I even saw it in the theater. There are definitely more violent PG-13 movies and downplay violence. Then you’ll see an R rated movie with nothing but a couple f-bombs. I’ve never understood it. I saw “This Film is Not Yet Rated”, I’d been trying to remember the name of that for years. Some of the 90’s/early 2000s teen movies rates PG-13 never made sense.

When you mentioned streaming services potentially being a way that getting your movie rated could actually be not required, I immediately thought of Steam. You don't need a rating from the ESRB to publish a game there. You can still add content warnings if you wish, though!

Ive been loving every video i watch of yours but this ones really important. Ive always despised censorship for what it does negatively to art and to people. The weird way we fetishize violence and demonize sexuality in this country has done damage to generations of people and all in the name of momey, self interest, or control. I think its obviously important to have categorization and warnings, but this system is just total nonsense. And your video gets these points out much more enjoyably then i am 😁🤘 keep it up homie
@samuelbarber61773 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I think the ratings system is actually kind of detrimental. I’m of the mentally that if a child wants to see a movie then it’s up to the parents to see to do the research and decide if they think it’s right for their child. Different children are affected differently by different things. Some 12 year olds might not be able to handle the slightest blood, whereas others may be able to handle movies that Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Saw would get sick at it. And if you want to see how inconsistent the ratings system is, just remember that Frozen and Raiders of the Lost Ark were both rated PG. Because those are the same thing, apparently.

Great video! Something that's not super clear to me as a non-US person: why do American cinema chains refuse to show NC-17/unrated films? It seems like a lot of censorship issues would be solved if they just...allowed films to be shown even if they have those ratings. Are there laws that change the cinema's tax status if it shows higher-rated films? Do the big studios refuse to distribute their films to cinemas that show NC-17 films? I feel like there must be some sort of underlying reason, otherwise it just seems like the cinemas are leaving money on the table by intentionally not showing some films.

My take is this: yes, violence is of course something bad and sexuality for the most part good but this rating system is not supposed to reflect that. In general I think that violence is something children start to understand at a fairly early age, a good deal before sex. Whether early exposure to sexuality is harmful or not, I don't know but in the very least it would leave the kids more confused. I don't think exposure to media has that much of an influence on whether you turn out a descent person anyways so this whole topic has been blown out if proportion.
@disappointedoptimist255 Жыл бұрын
Yeah deciding which topics to restrict more is very complicated and nuanced. Bad language is hardly going to seriously upset or traumatise most kids, but they will repeat it where they probably won't repeat a James Bond action setpiece. Nudity is mostly benign and innocent to a child, but any nudity that has a sexual nature, especially if it's somewhat creepy or coerced could make a child more likely to pick up weird complexes/be vulnerable to abuse/sexually harass other kids etc. And violence is often fantastical and non-repeatable but too much glorified violence will shape a child negatively and full-on gore can be extremely upsetting.

16 candles may have been the first time I saw boobs on a TV, the added 'Boing!' sound effect was a strange choice but there were a lot of strange choices in that film. The PG rating is bizarre and does clearly show the system's bias, especially with the actually adult moments of this coming of age story. Nudity is fine with me, shocker, it's the inconsistency that is so concerning. Good vid.

The MPA essentially exists so that the government doesn't decide to come in and regulate/censor stuff. Basically, it tries to get a read on what a lot of parents could get upset about and then head it off so parents don't go crying to the government about what's in theaters.
