Thanks for sharing this amazing experience with us Tony. Love your take on well-aged Bordeaux, I think the complexity Bordeaux wines develop is what makes it unique.

Love your channel & your video and commentary, @TrophyWineHunter 💯👍. I recently placed an order for a 2016 Leoville Las Cases, and will be looking forward to it. From the book 2016 or yours of Las Cases are scored high. Definitely will follow your other wine tasting reviews as well. Cheers.

Really special wine there and how spectacular that you got to visit and enjoy lunch with Pierre himself! I’ve had Leoville Las-Cases high on my list for a long time and have yet to pull the trigger on a bottle, 1990 looks incredibly promising. The ‘89 looks in great shape and the color is just gorgeous on that wine, I think you’re spot on that it’s got a lot of life left to live! Cheers and thank you for another fantastic review Side note: Is that another DRC I spot on the counter in the corner?! 🔥

@@TrophyWineHunter Delivered the goods. Was a little concerned that there was no label on the back of the bottle (bought from reputable French website but you never know) but it tasted great, still some decent dark fruit, silky tannins, evolved a bit actually as evening went on although we started it straight from a quick decant. Thanks for the tip.
@TrophyWineHunter

@@opelbogger glad you enjoyed. I just had 1989 Calon and I am now of the opinion 1989s do need quite a bit of time to open up. So I don't think they actually start feeling comfortable until 2-3 after decanting. Cheers!

Thanks for the video. I had 1999 Las Cases 2 nights ago at Elisa and I found it disappointing. Was still very fresh and red but I didn't get the Puillac/Saint Julien notes at all. I know 99 was not an easy year so maybe that's the reason. I have a couple of 96 in the cellar so will compare at some point.

Glad you had such a great experience- the wine sounds fantastic. Any sense of how much the ex-chateau status has to do with how good it was? Also, any recommendations on how to source these ex-chateau bottling? In my experience it's hard to know when you're buying online if a bottle has been purchased on release, or something else. Thanks!
@TrophyWineHunter
@TrophyWineHunter Жыл бұрын
noahcap: buying ex chateau gives you the comfort that you have the best possible chance of the wine having perfect provenance. I only buy from reputable sources and I believe that is why my % of spoiled or corked bottles is very, very low. If it does not clearly state it is from the winery, it isnt. Cheers!

Great video and review. The best bordeaux I've had : 1982 Leoville Las Cases . I agree that other wines like the Pontet and Lynch Bages you mention are not in the same league.

great content. just subscribed to your channel. I recently had the 1996 las cases which blew me away (definitely first growth quality, in a good drinking window. i gave it 98 points). i also thought the 1990 las cases, which i had last december was phenomenol. Have you tried these recently? and if so, what are your views, scores for these wines. cheers!

thomas: thank you for subscribing to my channel. 1996: I had a bottle in July. My notes: decanted for 8 hours. Still has acidity and tannins although now leather and silky. Dried dark fruit with an earthy underbrush aftertaste. Preferred the 96 Latour in a side by side tasting but not by much. Exceptional wine. 95 pts. 1990: I had a bottle in April. My notes: double decanted for 3.5 hours. Still powerful and slightly woody aftertaste. Oak and some red fruit on the palate. Needs a bit more aging or aeration. 93 pts. Cheers!

I have two bottles of the 1989, late release 2020... what would you recommend me with such an old Bordeaux? Does this wine still benefit from oxygen? I can put it in a small decanter of just poor it from the bottle..
@TrophyWineHunter
@TrophyWineHunter Ай бұрын
rb: I would open and just taste out of the bottle. If you think it is tight, then decant it. It probably needs about 1 hour in decanter but I don't think it needs a lot of time in decanter Having said that I don't think putting it in a decanter will hurt the wine either. It is still very powerful. Cheers!

🤩Wonderful discussion about 1st growths! '61 Las Cases in 1980 - polished and subtle, maybe of all reds, but still too young. The original 1st growths, aged, - maybe more opulent. 89 is opulent, right? So you lucky duck! Great wines are far above the 100 point scale! 100 points only means nothing wrong, really. 1864 Montrachet is unscorable! maybe need a "billion point" scale! So many new wines are flawless. That is not true of historical wines. The greatest express the most= Need studying, Las Cases maybe the most. Thanks so much!🙏

nichotime: scoring is really just a personal preference. My scoring is for my palate since everyone's palate is different. I don't think you can give more than 100 points on a 100 point scale. So the tough decision is to see when to give a high score. Since I am not a wine critic, I feel no need or pressure to give any wine 100 points. I just tell it like how I feel. I have still wines back to the 1920s and Madieras back to the 1800s. I can tell you it is a magical experience to think if those people who made the wine would every think a person like me would be drinking their wines all these years later. Please like, subscribe and keep watching. Cheers!

Oscar: I partly agree. I think off and on during its history, it can be quite good. There have been spans in its history where it hasn't been as good. Currently, it is on the upswing again but we won't be able to judge these wines for another 15 years. Cheers!
