I love the unabashed bellicosity of this song! "This day by fighting we’ll show our devotion." That phrase is probably my favorite. It sums up the very essence of chivalrous virtue.

I like the song as well I'd like to hear it song by a choir and congregation at mass on the feast day. Not sure why we're always apologizing for the things God does for us.... I believe that's called ingratitude and slightly perfidious.

My blood was present at the taking of Jerusalem (Sir Cagno); then as secretary to the HRE and consort to the Queen of Poland my blood helped save Vienna (Sir Malanotti); my blood was shed on the walls of Belgrade 1688 when the city fell to the HRE (Sir Pancheri); lastly, I do not know if he was related but one of the captains in the Battle of Lepanto was a Cologna, the name of my grandfather.

Salve Maria!

I found a song the other day called Lepanto. Which sings about the battle of Lepanto where Christians prayed to Mary to crush the crescent and slaves of the wicked serpent. Alluding to the Turkish invading fleet. I'm struggling with the idea that Chrsitians can and or must do battle against other people. What's the word on that?

There are principles of self defense and just war that must be looked into. These have been unquestionably defined by the Church since its beginning with Christ, in founding His Church. The defense of ones self, family, and country are based on the natural law. The natural law is a reflection of the eternal law. In the Natural Law, summarized by the Ten Commandments; one can see the mind of God reflected in the order that He has created for His glory. Sadly, sin has introduced this great clash of evil against good, through men (and fallen angels) abusing the free will that God has given them. It is on account of sin that terrible crimes and war and suffering afflict us until the end of time. But God can take good out of an evil situation and use it to purify ourselves and society. It is therefore necessary to know and study the guiding moral principles to resist these evils in their various degrees in which individuals or society must face them. First, one of course cannot desire the eternal condemnation of a human opposition, but can desire and should ask God for the evil of an aggression to cease and can pursue all moral and just means for this. "Lord, overthrow my enemies that surround me! Let them be scattered and give me strength against them etc.." To ask God to crush the pride of the acting aggressor may perhaps be the window necessary for a conversion of that person or persons. This could be on the scale of an individual aggression or a large scale military scenario. In the New Testament, Jesus Christ praised the military profession in His dealing with the Centurions in the Gospels. Never did He oppose or question the just and legitimate objectives of these men's profession. The Catholic Church has even memorialized the faith of a Centurion by paraphrasing him in its own liturgy to the end of time when he said: "Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldst enter under my roof: but only say the word, and my servant shall be healed. [Matthew 8:8] We also have the first war in the history of creation, which was between the good and bad angels. Their heavenly reward or loss of it, was based on whether their love of God led them, or not, to fight against the aborning evil that Lucifer started by his sin of pride and revolt against God. The Old Testament is full of cases when God, directly commands the Chosen People to fight against evils. In the New Testament we read of Christ, Who at the end of the world, will return in glory and power and justice, and eternally cast into Hell, all those without exception, who persevere to the end of their lives in their sinful ways by rejecting His grace and friendship. This action of Christ in punishing the wicked, will far exceed to an incomprehensible, irrevocable and everlasting degree, any possible suffering that men can ever justly inflict against our fellow human beings in this life of trial. But, one can see in Jesus Christ at the Final Judgement, the apex of a true fighter, Who will and does personify the just and militant spirit against evil. First He came with the necessary remedy to vanquish the truest spiritual evils (sin), through His merciful Redemption and its necessary application to souls through His Church and it's Sacraments. But at the end of the time, He will completely vanquish and overthrow all evils by His Infinite Justice on the Last Day. These, as stated before, are for reasons of legitimate defense for a just and good cause, as has always been outlined by the Church and by which the greatest and saintly minds, such as Saint Thomas Aquinas, have expounded upon in their teachings regarding just war and principles linked to it etc. The Church has also called the faithful on earth, The Church Militant. The Church has also not avoided canonizing many saints, (such as Saint Louis IX, Saint Ferdinand of Castile and others) who personally fought and led armies in battles against various foes. These fights and wars were not contrary to, and certainly did not necessarily overthrow their states of sanctity. One could rightly consider and discuss the contrary. Such actions even received the blessings of many ecclesiastical and temporal authorities of their time. And even heaven itself did not shun from confirming the heroic examples of these saints by great documented and verified miracles. These are a few examples of the legitimacy of the Christian Spirit of Chivalry. Our Lady of Victory, pray for us! God bless!
