Thanks for debunking the myth that crochet is not for men. When I retired, and was alone after losing my wife, I learned to crochet for a way to handle my grief, and as an outlet for my creativity. That was in 2010, and I have never looked back. Over 500 projects later and now at age 78, I'm still crocheting. Hats for charity and baby blankets for our church's ministry are my " thing" now. Unfortunately, arthritis has slowed down my productivity, but I still get in a few rows every day. ( You've taught me all about amigurumi and I am loving it, too. Just have to work slower and fewer rows at a time! Thank you!)

Are you kidding?!? I LOVE hearing about men that crochet! Especially since I'm the only one in my family or circle of friends that crochets. It's great to find other people to talk to about projects, issues, and what not that truly understand what crocheting is all about! And I also understand not being able to do as much as you used to. I don't have arthritis, I have carpal tunnel, in both wrists, and my fingers tend to cramp up or go numb if I do too much at once. I will crochet for 30mins to an hour, then set aside my project to do something different.

So nice to read your lines .... well in the 70's I was almost of legal age, when I have learned to crochet, from my now late, Auntie Rose, she taught me the basics of crochet, it's been 53 years, no regrets but joy, calm... Now that I'm retired, I have all the time I need to crochet, and include this art, in volunteering with people in oncology care... because I myself, am a cancer survivor... and the strange look, of others in the waiting rooms, does not affect me at all.. it belongs to them.. so @jimflack9462 Bravo to you! I remember hearing many years ago that Rosie Greer (the famous athlete) did needle point, I thought it was strange at the time but never saw any thing wrong with it. I actually thought that it was brave of him to share his skill with the world and make it OK for other men.

Not sure if it would be helpful enough for your arthritis or not, but if you haven’t already, you might consider trying an odyssey hook. I struggle with hand pain as well, and I’m able to crochet longer with the odyssey hooks (and my hands don’t hurt a lot afterward like before.) It took me a minute to get to them (I hold them from the middle/top area, rather than from the end of the hook, which helped me adjust to them.) Thought I’d mention in case you haven’t tried them. I am a 57 year old man who taught myself to crochet about 10 years ago. Thank God for KZbin and all of the content creators out there who have inspired me and taught me so much! I tried several times over the years to learn, mostly from books, but it wasn’t until I was able to follow along with KZbin that I finally succeeded. I wanted an afghan so bad that I just decided to teach myself how to make one. I crochet just about every day. I can’t just sit and watch TV without working on a project. And, I have large stash of completed afghans that make excellent gifts when I need one for that special friend or family member.

Thanks for standing up for us guys!!!! I have to admit, I’m still apprehensive to crochet in public. Yesterday, for example, I was sitting at the vet’s office worried about my very sick cat. I wanted to sit and crochet to deal with the stress and anxiety. I had a WIP in the trunk of my car, but I wouldn’t go get it. Unfortunately we lost our kitty yesterday. My sons are gypsy and Puerto Rican and they are 15 and 13 they were incredibly apprehensive about starting crochet and sharing it with their peers then the kids saw the hacky sacks and the among us amigarumi they made and now everyone wants one from them. Crochet is for everyone ❤

I do have to ask though I understand the Puerto Rican part because I'm actually friends with many but how does one become a gypsy? I swear I always wanted to know but I don't know anyone else to ask. @@spoiledwitch82 no question is ever wrong to ask. 😌 And it’s a GREAT question. I come from a village in Pennsylvania we were there before the settlers. We are grandfathered into the land with the native Americans although we are separate. We do attend the Pow-Wows but we also “pow wow” which is like gypsy doctoring or witching 😃. There are many kinds of gypsy but The Roma people is what is commonly attributed to the gypsy population. I have cousins that are Roma but I am Egyptian and Pennsylvania Dutch Gypsy. That is pretty much the ethnic mix of my tribe with also many polish /Pennsylvania Dutch gypsies. My 15 year old only got into it because his 13 year old brother was amazing at it and he had to out do him 😅 trust me I get it. My oldest wouldn’t try it specifically because I asked but the need to beat his brother overrode the need to be obstinate 😅.

I mean I heard it being like celebrations but I don't like to go by what I heard if I can ask the source. Is it just ceremonial? Is there more to it? Do you connect with the ancestors? I've been crocheting for nearly 50 years!! I was taught at a young age by a great grandmother, and she was still crocheting into her 80s. Once I was in a hobby store looking at yarn. A young adult, 20ish, was also looking at yarn. She said she crocheted asked me if I crochet, and I said I crochet and knit. She said oh, she was thinking of learning to knit when she was older, like about 40. Then she tried to backtrack saying that 40 was old. I just laughed a said I enjoy both. Considering that's I was in my 50s at the time. I still laugh about this today.

Time consuming lol I always hated making blankets...until...I found the Tunisian stitches omg I made a twin size blanket in one month for one of my grandsons I shocked myself!! So I made another and now I'm on my 3rd Tunisian stitch blanket they are all different. I have one grandson to go and he is 2 yrs old his blanket will be an ABC blanket with his name across the top. Thank you for debunking these myths. It's so great to see so many young people and men taking up crochet. I crochet and knit and find that I really enjoy how free-form crochet can be. A little tip for when you are not working on your crochet-pull up a loop and put a locking stitch marker on that loop. The loop will not pull out.

Love this video, you discussed how the art of crochet is not just for grandma. I learned in prison of all places and credit the skill for giving me much more patience and a sense of accomplishment when I see my completed project. I am 58 years old now and have a nice little side hustle selling my creations. By the way, I am a man and get a lot of flack about this hobby. the selling point for me re: crochet is actually that you can get machines that knit. but machines cannot figure out how to do crochet stitches. people are DESPERATE for arts and crafts that can't immediately be automated. so it's a HUGE selling point.

When I was a kid, I didn't think I'd ever want to crochet. The only examples I saw were intricate lace doilies my grandma made out of the thinnest thread. I was completely intimidated by that type of project and I still am! Thank goodness I decided to give it a try with yarn!

All of these points were so true. I have been crocheting since I was 12...nearly 50 years and although I have dabbled in other crafts it's always been what I come back to. I agree that it has had a huge resurgence. A friend asked me to teach her and her 3 girls during Christmas break. Before I knew it all the visiting relatives were at the table with hooks and yarn. There were 11 in all! We had a great time and I was happy to pass on this wonderful craft.❤

When I was younger I always felt like crochet was the ugly step-sister of knitting, especially in fine yarn circles, but my late mother-in-law, my daughter, and I kept crocheting. Now my granddaughter is also learning. Crochet is one of the few things that can only be made by hand and I believe it is having a renaissance because of this... people are valuing handmade more than ever. This particular male veteran crochets. I was curious, so watched a youtube tutorial. I spent under £10 on a set of hooks and some yarn and went right at it. I struggled so badly getting my tension completely wrong, so I asked a relative (who loves to crochet) for some advice. She invited me around and i sat in front of her and literally mirrored her actions. From that moment, I had it. I'm still a little bit messy, but I'm happy to be messy because its so mindful and I'm making *something* and that is what counts for me.

I know I’m going to be echoing, some of the same sentiments posted, but my grandmother taught me how to crochet when I was eight years old. I lost my grandmother in 1986. I still have the original crochet hooks that she taught me with. I’ve been crocheting for almost 48 years. I will be 56 in September. I share my joy of crochet with everyone. I taught both children and adults how to crochet as well. The one myth you debunked that really resonated with me was the one where you mentioned that many folks think that crochet is not as artistic or creative as knitting. That one literally makes my blood boil. The good news is that I have changed many folks’ opinions on that subject. In my opinion, my crochet work puts many knitting projects to shame. After a lifetime of thinking crochet was more difficult than knitting, I have finally moved past my fear and have becun my crochet journey. I am now obsessed with it. I have completed more crochet projects in the month than I did when I was handknitting. I find crochet gives you freedom to pivot when something is not working. With knitting you have to go back and make calculations of stitch and row counts. Ii gives you a chance to try something and if it does not work, just some frogging and you are back to the point where you started. (Dropping a stitch is less of a hassle and if you missed a yarn over etc, it becomes a "design feature."

I agree with all of these myths! I appreciate that you debunked them using facts and not just your opinion, though I value your opinion considerably. One reason I follow you is your use of research and statistics. There are a lot of us nerdy types in the fiber arts world! I was taught to crochet as a child and always associated it with the afghans and blankets and accessories in my mother's range of knowledge. I took up knitting when I moved to New Zealand in 2003 and have been obsessed ever since. I decided to try crochet during the pandemic as I realized there was a lot going on completely unlike my childhood experiences with the art, and I am totally smitten with both crafts now! All I needed was another reason to indulge in my yarn obsession. Thank you for sharing your favorite creators, too, such as Toni Lipsky. Keep creating and sharing! We need you!

Great debunking topic. THANK YOU! Another thing; I was told I couldn’t learn crochet if I didn’t hold the hook like a pencil. But I learned knitting first and so I naturally grabbed a crochet hook holding it like a knife. When I’m in public with crochet, I’ve been asked how I can possibly crochet holding the hook “wrong.” Well, hey, it works wonderfully and is “right” for me! 😁. Thank you again for the great video!

My cousin taught both me and my mother to crochet when I was 12 (my gran used to crochet but she's right-handed and we're not) so I've been avidly crocheting for 42 years! I mainly make things that I don't have to constantly look at, like granny squares or scarves, but I've made jerseys (you can call them sweaters but to us, if it's for winter and made from yarn it's a jersey!) and pullovers (sweater vests), baby clothes, table cloths, etc. I totally agree about not having too many WIPS although I usually do two projects at the same time because I get bored easily. I say to myself, "When I get to X number of squares I'll start on my next project" and then I make a start and switch back and forth. It stops me from feeling like I've gotten into a rut! I don't crochet very fast at all because I only do it for pleasure and not for money, so I just go at an even pace while watching TV. But I find your videos very inspiring I have to say! And the fact that you actually take the time to read the comments and respond actually inspires me even more! I love your videos on the different projects. We don't get the same brands of yarn here and have WAY less variety, so I can't really relate to videos which talk about which yarn to use, but I still find them very interesting. I have been very much blessed. During my lifetime, I have seen 5 generations crochet: my maternal grandmother - I have a vivid memory of Gramma sitting on the couch in her living room, listening to the TV, while working on a lacy counterpane. She was using bedspread weight thread(it is now called #10 size), with a size 7 steel hook. Her pattern was the Mountain Laurel motif(tablecloth). She made 4 counterpanes, one for each of her grandchildren. She also made ripple afghans for the grandkids too. She also made quilts. Gramma’s sisters did all sorts of needlework. Aunt Helen crocheted, knitted, and made quilts. Aunt Anna did those and also did tatting. She taught she how, and gave me one of her shuttles. My mom - I would be unable to list all the projects she finished. She always had just one WIP at a time on the hook. She knitted also. The mittens she made for us! In my childhood, only wool yarn was available. The mittens were so warm! Me - 😁 YoungestDaughter - I felt so blessed. In 2008, a couple weeks after the wedding, she called and asked me to come to her house, to show her how to crochet. She designs patterns. She has an Etsy store now, to sell her work and her original designs. YoungestGranddaughter - YD sent me a video of her working on something with orange yarn.

Lots of guys crochet! Mike Rivera, a line backer for the Miami dolphins crochets! I've heard of other NFL players who also knit or crochet. One of them even sells what he makes online. Rosey Grier, another NFL player did needlepoint and also knit and talked about a book called Needlepoint for Men. I agree, crochet is for everyone! A male friend of mine who can knit like no one's business helped me learn a little more a few years ago. I love to see men doing stuff like that. :)

Hi Elise, I'm one of those lucky few who started crocheting at about 4 years old. I remember I wasn't reading yet. I think I was driving my mom nuts, pestering her to teach me. So, she made me sit and watch her stitch for, what seemed like forever! Lol! Then she gave me a hook and a ball of yarn. I was making doll clothes with no patterns pretty soon after. Mom got into making doilies and that was inspiring for me too. I have made a few in my 50+ years. So glad I learned to read and "decode" crochet patterns. I'm a knitter now too. It took me a little longer to get that down though and I still consider myself as just an advanced beginner. I'm still learning new knitting skills and techniques every day. At the moment, I'm working on a Shetland Lace project. I have a friend who has hit a "snag" in the pattern and she has enlisted me to try and help figure out what the problem is. So, I started with the same pattern. I'm getting used to reading the chart, taking my time to avoid making big mistakes, using lots of stitch markers (that somehow manage to wander off my needles 🤷). But, I can honestly say that I am thoroughly enjoying the challenge of this project. 😊 And, I wholeheartedly encourage anyone-who has the desire to learn any of the yarn arts-to take a deep breath and dive on in. 💜✌️🧶

I taught myself to crochet when I was eight. I always told people and still do that grandmas are so good at crocheting and knitting is because they started when they were younger. It’s not like you reach a certain older age and say oh I’m finally old enough to crochet and knit. I taught myself because my mom didn’t know how and I couldn’t purl. I still can’t it’s the backward motions confuse my brain, I have trouble with crab stitch too. By the way I’m 62. 🙂🌈🐈🐈‍⬛💖 The myth that bugs me the most is that you can’t crochet comfortable socks. My name on Ravelry and Crochetville is Sockmad,and since I can’t knit (I’ve tried the knit boards for socks utter disaster for me) I crochet my socks and they come out just fine and are comfortable to wear. My favorite stitch for socks is the extended single crochet. I like to go toe up with the afterthought heels because short rows make me shudder. 😉

The bit about limiting WIP's made my ADHD brain laugh a bit but great video! Borrowed an idea from one of your Dollar Tree find vids and now keep those WIP's in their own little travel bags, so at least that helps keep the random piles of yarn around the house to a minimum. I taught myself to crochet in the 70s-learned to read a pattern and went from there. Now I have 2 granddaughters, 18 and 24 , who have learned to crochet from tutorials on KZbin. Hi Elise, “DEBUNKED”!! Thank you so very much for this video I loved every second of it. Definitely not just for older women…I wanted to pick up this art after watching my young 17 year old colleague crocheting in the lunchroom back in 2017. What makes me laugh 😹 is most people do think it’s only for grandma’s, so not true! I’ve started teaching my niece how to crochet and loom knit she loves it. I also introduced my friends two daughters to crochet when I started learning in 2018, the eldest has taken off with learning new stitches and creating, but the younger one is a lefty and unfortunately I’m not sure how to teach her without me learning how to crochet as a lefty. So we are working on loom knitting to start with. I’m happy to pass on what I know and what I learn. I’m trying to get my WIPs under control this year and no yarn until I do (I cheated, I asked my aunt to bring me back some red heart yarn so I can try it - I’m not from the USA/Canada 🤫). I've made 2 granny square cardigans and 4 other jumpers and a beautiful poncho. I have 8 jumpers on my todo list including learning lace. I always thought you had to hold the hook and yarn a certain way. Luckily, I found what works for me and it gets the job done. Especially with ( I think) the unnecessary wrapping the yarn around my index finger. I know some people do that. Not saying its wrong. It slowed me down and made my finger stiff.

Knitting is something my great grandmother taught to me when I was young as a way of passing on her knowledge and showing her affection when she babysat my brother and I as children. Here's a myth for you. Crocheted Home Decor is old fashioned and ages your home. While it's true that most grandmas have a lot of crocheted decor around the house... have you seen some of the new and trendy crocheted items? Crochet ottomans, crocheted poufs, curtains, rugs, couch cushions... And it's really cool because sometimes you want something that you just CAN'T FIND. You want a color combination for a certain room... of you can't buy it, make it! I would say that myth is also debunked.

As for the second myth, i was taught to knit before i was taught to crochet. When my friend tried to teach me how to crochet, i couldnt get the hang of it, and thought it was too difficult but then hopped on youtube. I much prefer to crochet, as i am a person who does mess up quite often, and am now known as a basic or beginner knitter and experiences crocheter. Love crocheting and is super easy to learn, even how to read patterns, once you have the right teacher

I'm another one of your viewers that was taught to both knit and crochet by my grandmother before I was 10, but I only knitted for many years as I thought crochet was just for doilies and blankets. By chance, about 15 years ago, I saw a pattern in a magazine for a crochet cardigan, what a revelation! I gave up knitting, made myself that crochet cardigan and I've not stopped crocheting ever since 😁 Have you ever tried Tunisian crochet? I took that up, thanks to KZbin, early last year after I was made redundant at 60, it saved my sanity until I was fortunate enough to find another job, and now I crochet normally and the Tunisian way in equal measure. Amigurumi is something I have not tried yet, but it's on my bucket list! I love your videos, thank you for the great content 👍

I actually believed that crochet was hard at one point-I tried to teach myself using patterns (this was before all the crochet was on the internet) and made a mess. I’d watch my aunt crochet and she taught me-the first thing I made was broomstick lace. It took a while to get my tension right, but I love it. I don’t read patterns well because my aunt never used a pattern-if she saw something and studied it, she could make it. Thank you for debunking all these silly myths

I started to crochet as a guy in my 20s, specifically amigurumi. I've never looked back. Coolest part about this being my hobby is that I sell the little characters I make for just enough to cover any yarn I need to purchase, or any tools. Speaking of tools, while I agree that you really don't need a lot of fancy gadgets for crochet, I highly recommend people new to the hobby to purchase some stitch markers. A dozen of them will probably only cost you three bucks and they will last forever. I'm still using the same ones I bought a decade ago, and I use them literally every project.

My mom taught me to crochet when I was 4. A few (ok, several 🙄) decades have passed since then. I've made things from countless afghans, stuffed animals (long before they had their own name), a sweater, doilies, to some fancy glass covers (for tea parties, to keep bugs out of your glass) for my stepmom. Unfortunately I haven't crocheted in over 11 years. I was struck with some serious medical problems that kept me from being able to hold a hook. I'm now diving back in and my mind is blown 🤯. I never thought I'd see so many people involved in this craft. It's a great thing to see - people that are not glued to Facebook, etc. but instead have a crochet hook in their hand! Love it

I have started knitting and later started crochet in fifth grade when I was younger. I am now a pre teen and love to crochet while watching your videos. I learned crochet from a class one of my classmates taught (we have special classes we take which includes student led classes each trimester) and I was struggling lol. But I got the hang of it and started crocheting more in the summer. I got to visit my great aunts who are skilled crocheted and happily gave me yarn, hooks, and some of their projects. I even got to visit one of my great aunts sewing shop and pick different colors of yarn I wanted. (My grandparents and family live overseas and my great aunts and uncles live in the villages which is a 2 hour drive from the city my grandparents live in. Let's just say...I had a load of bags when we came back home!) I'm trying to learn more knitting sitiches for now, but I am very happy I get have clusters of yarn and hook in my house now :)
