I'm so grateful that pilots are trained to know how to land a plane in any weather storm.

Thanks for the info above! Makes it much more interesting! Difference between a blizzard and a snowstorm is that in a blizzard, there's massive amounts of snow and wind at least 40 mph, reducing visibility substantially! If you've ever been in a blizzard, you will know the difference! The more the wind chill, the more danger of frostbite and hypothermia, not to speak of landing difficulties in an aircraft!

Thanks for the good video. I don't agree with the severe descriptive. The vis below the clouds was a mile or so, the ride on final was smooth and despite the snow on the runway it was shallow and dry. Good airlines, especially Delta avoid anything severe, be it turbulence, wind, icing etc. Cheers

It was a fairly smooth landing. A little rough, but hard to tell from the camera due to stabilization. However, the scenery on final was quite interesting to witness

FULL REVERSE THRUST You can hear it
@richardleonardon21927 жыл бұрын
Notice that the pilot did not use reverse thrusts and braked only a bit. I had a landing like this in Baltimore back in the 1990s right before they shut the airport.
@seannoble89484 жыл бұрын
He used max reverse thrusters and minimal wheel brake....when landing an airplane on a snowy runway using alot of wheel brake will increase the chances of losing control of the plane on the runway so thats why they use max reverse thrusters in the snow and minimal wheel brake

Well, later i want to be an pilot so yeah! I play Some realistic games but that would be never and never the same like this! I have to know its a flying object and autopilot? forgot with this wheater ! And this speed i should land with 130 or 140 but he was a Little bit faster so respect to this pilot it is so dangerous with that speed and when you put on the brakes u may tell it slip when you use your rudder! So respect to this pilots!
@ravensrulzaviation6 жыл бұрын
Best thing about the 737 ng’s and Max, they can land on their own if hey have to in bad weather, auto land.
@Jay_Force_One4 ай бұрын
Almost all commercial aircraft are equipped with ILS, not just the 737. Additionally, the airport and individual runways must have ILS (CAT I/CAT II) in order for the aircraft to make an “auto landing”. However the aircraft never truly land themselves. Essentially what happens is between the pilots, FMC, and Air Traffic Control the aircraft is able to follow radio signal vectors down to the runway with virtually no visibility. HOWEVER, one they hit MINIMUMS the pilots must have a visual to continue landing. If they do, they will take control and land the aircraft manually. If they don’t, they will have to go around for another approach OR divert to their secondary airport.
@lewkv3 жыл бұрын
How did they manage to get that smooth landing? The pilots shouldn't be focused on smooth landings as shown, in these severe weather conditions the main goal is to firmly land the aircraft.

1/4 vis and 35 mph winds denotes a blizzard and you only need one of the criteria. Like a severe storm, you need wind, hail, or tornadoes.
@retroboi697 жыл бұрын
There were certainly blizzard conditions. Blizzard is wind and visibility. You can have a 2-inch snowstorm that is classified as a blizzard or a 25 inch snowstorm that is NOT a blizzard. This video was shot in Detroits snowiest winter on record.
@robertpitts82227 жыл бұрын
I disagree! There is 3-4 different levels of snowstorm. This one is like heavy, but do NOT MEAN BLIZZARD.... snowstorm do not always mean blizzard. It can be light, medium, heavy, severe then final is blizzard.

Severe......SMH.....There's a video of a DC-9 landing in heavy snow and nearly zero visibility that is far more dramatic!
@LeppAviation9 жыл бұрын
+carleton morris Severe, yes. Blizzard status? No, you're right. If it wasn't a severe snowstorm however, we wouldn't have been delayed 2 hours at LAX and we wouldn't have circled the airport for 25 minutes before given a small window to land. It may not have been the most severe part of this particular storm, but I'd say it was still significant since I didn't have school the following 5 days. And in Michigan, that's saying something. And FYI, if you were talking about the DC-9 landing in a snowstorm at DTW, that's the same storm about 45 minutes after this video was shot. Thanks for watching.
