The 'wrought iron' is a genuine thing when dealing with the Fair Folk, at least in mythologies that have them. Cold iron can mean a number of things, be it meteoric/'thunderbolt' iron, pure iron or just iron that's been shaped with low heat, hence literally 'cold.' Depending on your source, it can repel fey, reveal them or harm or even kill them. It's supposed to be symbolic of mankind/industry having power over nature/the supernatural or whatever.
