A lot of people are confused about Leroy's workout routine ... it is true, he did more than 6 sets for a body part, but that was when he was a full-time bodybuilder. It's a difference. When half of your energy goes away because you are working 8-12 hours in an office job, studying for school, whatever, it's hard to do. Especially back then for Leroy, in the 50s, 60s, etc. where most of the jobs were 8-hour shifts, and you could go home happy after. Today you are working at least 9-12 hours in most situations, and sometimes on Saturdays too. It's just a different world. Training 10-15 sets, maybe up 20 sets per body part on a Full Body Routine, like Leroy sometimes did, is something for a professional or at least advanced bodybuilder.

@philipph.38765 жыл бұрын
@Greg Pettis So how do you exactly know what he's talking about? It seems to me that you just said it to make it fit your narrative. Sure, you're not wrong, you work multiple muscles on many movements, but obviously, there are isolation movements such as Calf Raises. And in my honest opinion, you can't be a complete bodybuilder getting all the work for your muscles done from indirect work. You won't grow big shoulders getting your shoulder work from a Bench Press or your Triceps work from an Overhead Press.

After learning intensity from Mentzer, I discovered this guy. He turned me to training more often. I started with full body, but currently train upper and lower. Although after experimenting and learning what works best for me, I program my training over a month. So if I have trained upper body, I won't train upper until I've rested 3-4 days and the same for legs. So averaging 3 times a week. One week upper twice, the following week it may work out legs are twice. So that's approx 14 seasons a month. That's so much better for my recovery.

He was a nice guy and answered all my questions while he was working out in the back room of the office. He said "Just be very consistent with your workouts and do a lot of sets of whatever good exercises you like and make sure you get a great pump every workout." That was it! Simple. It says Leroy Colbert did 15 sets on average. And I believe that is what you have to do when you are an advanced bodybuilder. However, 6 sets 3 times per week in a Full Body program is what he preached later. Maybe he overthought his training methods. I've seen people who train a muscle on average 3-4 a week usually go with 5-6 sets per body part.

The amount of sets you do depends on how much muscle you already have. And you ramp up the weight. If you do 6 take 2/3rds of your 8 rep max for first set, add weight and do second set, more weight for the 3rd set still at 8 reps, then for the 4th set you should be at the 8 rep max and you do 8 reps, for the 5th and 6th set you drop the weight down to do more sets of 8. Before I started training like this I was used to 3-4 sets to failure. This way of training while not hitting failure is a lot better, started seeing gym performance progress within a week of training.

@boxerfencer6 жыл бұрын
Most of your gains are the first years of training, and considering that you can't lift enough weight to drastically challenge your recuperative capabilities as a newb, fullbody works well enough. Especially as a teenager or young adult with plenty of time to sleep and beneficial levels of hormones as the case with most of this lifters of this era. You'll also remember though, that Colbert made his biggest gains in his upper-body (specifically his arms) after his motorcycle accident where he sustained a life long ankle injury, barring him from leg training for a long while, months if I recall. And probably where he introduced upper-lower. So, the case for fullbody being the most beneficial is case dependent. Personally, I've recently gone back to fullbody due to time constraints as an older man and had to seriously make some tweaks, taking out barbell squats and barbell deadlifts to make it work.

3 sets per body part for conditioning and 6 sets per body part to build. Although at some point he did use DHEA and even though its not a steroid if you arent going to use it, at least u know 3 sets per body part is safe for natural bodybuilders. Keep in mind he also said that you should listen to your body, so if u grow on 10 sets then go ahead but dont start at 10 as a beginner. The more experienced you are the more sets u will need.
@sebastienroux17905 жыл бұрын
@Greg Pettis Every other day definitely. But the amount of sets would depend on how the individual recovers. More than 3 sets I burn out instantly. At 3 sets I burn out slower, at 2 I burn out really slow. Haven't burned out on 1 set per body part yet. In my defense I take every set as close to failure as I can without killing myself (I gym alone so no spotter). Perhaps the too close to failure might be why I burn out at 3 sets but the thing is I lose strength if I don't train that way. And with 1 set per body part I can recover without even eating 0.5 g per pound in protein definitely making cutting easier.
@sebastienroux17905 жыл бұрын
@Greg Pettis I lift for both. I generally go as heavy as I can without breaking the form between 8-10 reps. Any higher and it feels like cardio any lower and I'll need different rep ranges for different muscles. So when I reach 10 reps then next weight's 8th rep (last rep) will be significantly slower. On rare occasion for example on the bench one arm would go up first before the other, on that last rep. So I don't really know how close to failure I'm training when it comes to % of 1rm. I think the next rep would definitely not finish. I train for both size and strength, I want to train for both without spending all day in the gym or needing to spend my entire budget on food just to recover.

In your 40's doing ten sets as a natural you get fucked up. Sleep quality sucks. And recovery takes to long.

also, Vince, reg parks etc all did steroids! Just not at the level they use them today....also the juice was legal at the time...

Just saying everything I have seen about this guy touted 3 4 and 6 sets and he indicated since it is every other day, and full body you can’t do so many sets ... he may have experimented with what you say but from what I’ve seen and heard that wasn’t the norm.... send me the video that he indicates 10 sets full body etc my email is arispdo1@gmail.com not disrespecting you but just haven’t seen or heard that ...take care.

As far as reg parks , Vince G Reeve etc they were on steroids and they were legal back then....

yes, you got it all wrong! he advocated 3 sets per body part and if completely gungho and advanced 6 at the very most for advanced but 3 or 4 as a norm for consistent gains! I also have no Idea where you came up with 10 sets...every other day 10 sets or 15 each body part? you need to go back and reread Colberts Ideology! totally misinformed brother!

did you not see the new video i posted about his 10 set training? please watch you're are greatly mistaken
@Moniemon74 жыл бұрын
Daniel Figueroa 10 sets per body part was what Leroy called the blitz routine. After doing it he would need 2 to 3 days rest and it was only an every now and then thing. He also said the body can only handle it for so long.

1 minute rest between sets, first few sets nowhere NEAR failure

Nobody can handle 10 sets per body part in one session, only the drug lifter
@DanielFigueroa6 жыл бұрын
i used to do 10 sets a body part, i did it for like a month or two. with the right energy, you can do it. just not all the time. steve reeves was a genetic freak so he did 9 sets per body part sometimes, well thats what his contest routine says
@roundboyli72175 жыл бұрын
Leroy contradicted himself repeatedly truth is when he made all his videos he forgot what he did 50 prior
@DanielFigueroa5 жыл бұрын
i mean not really because he was a genetic freak and i think he was assuming that not everyone has the genetics at him. so he played it safe with the volume that he gives you. i don't know honestly... just my take on it

@andyc99794 жыл бұрын
Yes it's known guys from the this era used. Manly testosterone and nilivar and dianabol. The guy below thinks he outsmarted you but you're the one who is correct. Not saying every bb from the 50s used them but the big names definitely did. Reg park used steroids. It's not a knock. People always freak cuz they don't wanna hear it nor believe it

I don't care how he looks, this routine is crap. How the hell are you going to do 10 (or 6 for those ones that say that he said 6) sets of chest, then 10 sets of delts, and then be at your 100% for doing 10 sets of leg and 10 sets of back? That doesn't make sense. That's an inefficient workout.
@dannygoldbach32436 жыл бұрын
Yeah this is wrong. Just watched one of his last videos. Full body every other day. One set per. Nows there's research to support it. Even jym is on board lol

@Satarnoch6 жыл бұрын
Yeah no. He didn't develop the arms because of rest and not training. It was because he got injured and could only focus on upper body.. Also I believe he was natural... right up until the injury and was PROBABLY medicated with steroids, because they quicken recovery. And maybe not consciously take them for training, but they of course helped with growing.
