I'm french and for me she has the best french pronunciation of all non french singers. I can clearly understand what she says. And of course she is very talented.

I agree. When you can understand the lyrics, it makes the song so much better. Her breath control is also amazing. This is my favorite performance of this song by far. Just like Diana Damrau as Queen Of The Night, Ms. Kim really owns this role.

Actually it is easier to sing when you move around, for example during voice lessons and warm up, especially when it comes to the highs. What’s even harder is singing without moving(in this particular scene, the staging is that way regarding this production(and many others), Kathleen Kim’s coloratura and range is out of this world that she can sing it with being still too.) plus, those moves back up your staccati a lot.

@Lana My problem with them is that Rachele is so stick, she doesn't move much around the stage. Erin is a good actress, but it feels like she had problems with the breath: she cuts words because she has to breathe and to me it's so annoying.

Being an Engineer, while I am enjoying listening to the singing, I am also appreciating this from a technical and a scientific and mathematical angle. She is singing some connected notes where she moves from one note to the other relatively slowly with no gaps of silence in between and so she can feel and mentally weigh the note and adjust or tune it to project the right frequency, but she is also singing many many unconnected bursts of frequencies which are emerging so quickly from silence into the right frequency, and I find that is remarkable. Every oscillator which I built in my life has a starting transient before it settles down where every component state adjusts itself according. But starting an oscillator very quickly and expect it to settle at the right frequency, almost instantaneously, is almost impossible in electronic circuits even if the oscillator is crystal controlled. Mathematically there are many extra generated frequencies in a burst of a particular note. Actually it is infinity in theory. Yet here is this young woman, preceding the note with perfect silence then generating the right note almost instantaneously That means that with her mental power, she is silently and consciously adjusting the state of her larynx, her tongue, her teeth and pressure in her lungs and then she let it all go instantaneously to generate the note, and yet there is very little transient notes being generated. How does she know beforehand that the right note is coming our? Jean-Baptiste Joseph Fourier who was a French mathematician and physicist born in Auxerre and best known for initiating the investigation of Fourier series and their applications to problems of vibrations hence frequency analyses he would also be surprised of the mental power of this singer how she mentally prepares all the necessary singing human components in a split second and knows that the right note will emerge. Remarkable indeed. Add all this to the sense of humour being projected, this singing is very enjoyable from many angles, including its mathematics and the engineering in winding her up occasionally !!!

Well, yes - also being an engineer I have to agree. Isn't it nice that there are some things that can still amaze us even in these days?
@carmelpule69548 жыл бұрын
Sir , thank you for appreciating my comments, and it is clear that there are still so many unknown factors around us which will amaze us when we become aware of them. Meanwhile I consider myself a very lucky man in that not only one can appreciates the visible facts before him, but one can link and understand all the other comforts of life to engineering as philosophies and religions and politics through history did not provide much amazement in life but only promises of comfort in the future or after death!! The support of engineering to arts and the comforts in our homes is something few people appreciate and the appreciation of the power of mathematics and science to increase the appreciation of the invisible components around us, including the beauty of electromagnetic fields is an emotion that one can only build and reach by training the mind to go into a mental state that the eyes and ears and other human sensors can never achieve but only act as input port, but not a processing capacity. Music is beautiful and so necessary, but the components of engineering takes the human mind to higher levels and one needs to evolve beyond human emotions to appreciate the real amazing contents of our universe.

I'm happy that I'm not the only one who likes thinking about the mathematics behind music ;) I sang in a choir when I was a child, and I always hated warming up before a performance; I thought it was boring and a waste of time. But as I got older I started to understand the point of it: you can't expect your machine to hit the right frequencies when it's cold! I also remember my music teacher chiding me for "scooping" the note, or "sliding into it", like a pop-singer... it's very much like you describe your oscillator starting in one place and settling down into the frequency. Hitting the note straight on takes practice, and you are correct that what Kathleen Kim does here is very remarkable :D

I think it can be agreed that everyone who reads this comment thread will be a little more intelligent after reading it - a rare occurrence these days! Thanks for sharing and enjoy the great music! :)

800eddie800. Well, thank you for appreciating the wonder of invisible engineering even in the human body and all art.Most people do not appreciate that Engineering is the foundations of art ! When in my original I said, " That means that with her mental power, she is silently and consciously adjusting the state of her larynx, her tongue, her teeth and pressure in her lungs and then she lets it all go instantaneously to generate the note,....." well to think that all that preparation and adjustments of the vocal components to prepare for the launching of the note............. and all she has for comparing and weighing the note is the MEMORY IN HER OWN MIND. She has no external metronome to compare with but only her own silent MEMORY inside her mind that in itself I find so remarkable. Perhaps all I can say is that we all should aim to dig as deep as we can in the beauty of the universe around us and most of it is so silent and invisible. Thank you for your appreciation in that we should all seek deeper processing of the universe around us. Many people prefer to learn a lot of NOUNS to increase their knowledge, I personally think that we should learn a lot of VERBS to know how the Universe behaves as learning NOUNS you can only describe what you own or see and yet you still do not know anything about it. Verbs on the other hand teach you more than what something is called. I hope that people who follow this thread appreciate the importance of VERBS rather than learning NOUNS to know what to call items around them and yet they do not know anything about it . Verbs are king in this universe and I believe it is knowing the application of verbs that makes us intelligence.

This opera and this song especially has a very special place in my heart. Long story, but short version: I was fortunate enough to assist as a volunteer the OperaHouse in Nordfjordeid, Norway. This opera required a lot of rehearsals and everytime this song came: I smiled, cried and was totally amazed. Beautiful, funny and catchy song. I bet it's hard to sing it too. And by the way, the singer nailed it. Everytime. Furthermore, her performance was better after each rehearsal. ❤ never really liked the genre, but after working on one, I realized that this and many other music genre has it's own beauty ❤ This performance resembles to the one I heard.

+Mcken Mckenzie Are there any grounds for that? There is reason for Natalie's vocal cord, and why she can't sing no more though she's not that old. She sang too much intensely for her capability-Especially when she hit the high notes. At first, it seems like her voice is brilliant and strong, but actually, her vocalization is not proper and also,the more you listen her singing, the more you feel stressed and noisy.

Joylinda Jenner, Natalie Dessay is not a lazy ass, she's a harworker. Her problem is that she lost a lot of her hability to sing opera because she went to far (wich prove she's not a lazy person).
