Gypsy jazz inherited of Django Reinhardt, sometimes called Gypsy swing, is the only non-american form of jazz recognized by the people who created Jazz. A purely French Jazz, that has crossed many borders, a festive and happy music that now belongs to more than a people’s patrimony. Different generations of his most brilliant heirs shares with us their love for this music, their approach, their relationship with Django, and how they think it is evolving.

ive heard all the contenders for the greatest guitarist ever. Some of them are astounding. But when you hear Django play. You are left in no dout this man is above them all. His talent is almost supernatural. Guitarists are still trying to catch up to him

Shame the manouche cliché is his legacy. There was never anyone in the 30s who even attempted to play remotely like him. With good reason as thousands of KZbin drivel strivers attest! Nobody 'thinks' like him so they can't make it work.

Brilliant documentary. Love hearing it in its original language. Perhaps it will inspire some to learn a bit of French. Moi, pas de problème. I'm happy to see the traditions of "Manouche" Jazz being carried into the present day. Treasures like this must not be forgotten. Music is a living thing and needs new generations to nurture it. Merci.

Grand documentaire! Django n'était pas seulement un guitariste magistral mais également un compositeur remarquable. Quiconque joue de la guitare rencontrera tôt ou tard Django Reinhardt. Son influence sur la musique de guitare est immense.

Could you please somehow get some subtitles on this. Looks like an amazing documentary but I can't understand it because unfortunately I only speak English. I'm sure that many others are in the same situation as this and would greatly appreciate English subtitles, and for other languages if possible. Thanks Josh.

I just got a few price quote for subtitling this (this can be done online). The minimum price is just a bit above 500 Euros (with a 3 days turnaround time). Who do suggest shall pay this?

English subtitles likely say: Django Reinhardt invented a genre of music called gypsy jazz. A bunch of people play it well (Rosenbergs, Lagrene, Stephan, among others). Some try to make it their own by unnecessarily adding brass, drums, or wind instruments in an attempt to make it unique and while most of the audience will smile and clap politely, they’re grinding their teeth in disgust. They just want to hear it the way It ought to be played: without pickups, without drums, without brass, without wind, just a group of people with strings, a smile, and whenever possible, a pencil thin moustachio.

If you like and are interested by Django music, you might do an effort to try to understand french. There are on youtube 1 billion of jazz movies never translated from english, we - French or others - have to understand it even if we are not native english speaker. You have to do the same, the whole world do not speak only english...

@@philippegambini6297 Well, one hell of a lot more people speak - and understand -English than French. What's the point of making something if it's only going to reach 1% of its potential audience. I doesn't make sense.

@@musik102 of course but... Let's make an effort to go towards something else than english langage, as we do, and let's be openminded. Because all above, music do not need any words anyway, so... I can say you that for this movie, french comments do not add something very important. The more important is the music.
