They said that the actors set the pace. Yes, *usually* it probably does work the other way around. But not in this version. This is an amazing version. Can't believe nobody thought of doing this musical this way sooner. But I guess...good things come to those who wait. ^___^

Cosette in the book is young, pretty, innocent, and dainty -exactly how Amanda's voice is. Amanda herself said she lacked training and thinks her voice was so weak in the movie. She was so humble and wiling to learn and doesn't deserve the hate y'all give. She hit those high notes so effortlessly all the while looking like a goddess. As much as Samantha and Anne's voice are ideal for broadway which is strong and loud (both are incredible and I love them), I think the movie made the right choice for Cosette to have that high butterfly-like voice that makes her distinct and more realistic as a blooming young lady.
@bethgarcia1838
@bethgarcia1838 3 жыл бұрын
except cosette is the classic Broadway leading lady, and she's actually written to sound more like a broadway golden age leading lady/love interest (kind of toned down classical/operatic soprano, but still with a strong and well placed voice. Sweeter than pure opera but not fragile!) than what she sounds like in the film! If it was a different score, I'd completely agree, but to me it's odd to hear such a delicate voice singing these songs hahaha
@benjjjjsin
@benjjjjsin 2 жыл бұрын
@@bethgarcia1838 they borrowed a lot from the book version of Cosette because the stage version is such a bland and paper thin character. Amanda has the exact voice Cosette has in the book. The only problem really is she wasn’t trained enough (although she trained classically as a teen, she quit singing and became a smoker so her vocal chords were in bad shape; she had 6 months to rehabilitate her voice AND get classical technique) and was very vocal about her frustration about her vocal performance. It’s kind of a right actor at the wrong time situation imo
@julistarling8382
@julistarling8382 2 жыл бұрын
I think all of you are right in different ways. I wish the book Cosette did sound like that but what just flew into my mind from the book is that the author said about (child) Cosette that the people all called her the Lark "except that the poor lark never sang". I don't know if the eighteen-year-old Cosette sang or not. If she did, it might have sounded like Amanda (sort of). We can't really know for sure though.
@julistarling8382

One of the few things I never liked about the musical of Les Mis is that they made grown up Eponine seem wonderful while making grown up Cosette seem like almost nothing. Book Eponine was creepy and book Cosette was a nice person and a much more rounded out character than we ever see in *any* musical version.
@julistarling8382
@julistarling8382 2 жыл бұрын
Book Eponine seduced Marius deliberately because she thought that by finding out what sex was like then she would find out what love was like. She did not love him or anyone. Probably not even her own family (who are the Thenardiers by the way even though we only briefly see that in the stage musical and even less in the movie, if at all in the movie). Musical Eponine is a good girl but Marius just never noticed her because he only had eyes for Cosette, and unfortunately we can hardly see why because they don't show the real her except in childhood which was ten years before Marius met her.

I just read the book and Cosette makes so much more sense now especially how Amanda sing it. Cosette is called the Lark, She was up at dawn like birds sweeping and being basically a slave of the Thenadiers. "A lark that did not sing" I think the words was. She like Valjean did not know love before they met and now with Valjean the lark could sing. And that is that is what I hear when she sings.

I Dreamed A Dream is a perfect example of this and Anne Hathaway sang it with such emotion and it was so powerful. I cried at her performance. Samantha Barks was also exceptional here with her voice. In Finland we have this saying ”to climb up a tree arse first”, and the way this film was recorded really sounds like a perfect example of that. Recording an orchestra on top of a vocal track that doesn’t even follow a fixed tempo is _insanely_ difficult. Like the benefits outlined by the cast and crew here are really small compared to the problems it creates. I hope the musicians were paid handsomely for their job.

I think he did a great job for his capacities though. He's a great Javert of his own and obviously they had to rearrange the vocality of the character based on his few techinque, but even with that light, half-voiced sound, he manages to give the character his consistency and you can tell he always feels the songs' lyrics as he does with lines. Anyway, the same exact thing happened with Eddie Redmayne's Marius songs if you focus on the timbres he uses, but it appears to me that everyone's being more benevolent towards him and adversing Russell Crowe instead.

There is no possible way this can be healthy for the singers' vocal chords to give it their all on every single take over and over again

It wasn't. Especially not when you consider under what circumstances they were singing- they kept starving and dehydrating themselves to look good on screen and then had to sing on top of that. It was pretty dangerous, actually.

Right so I watched this on the plane and I cry pretty effortlessly at emotional scenes in shows/movies. To say I was sobbing in my seat next to my mother while a stranger looked at me in horror was an understatement. I was at “I dreamed a dream” just falling to pieces and my mum was like “oh my god! Are you ok?”, slightly laughing I might add. When I was like “no! It so sad”. My mom was just like “has she died yet?” And my voice caught on another sob, “SHE DIES?!”. My mom just laughed and explained to the gentleman what I was watching lol great movie.

There are great, beautiful moments in this movie. There are also really bad, cringeworthy “oof” moments. Your mileage on whether the choice to have the actors sing live worked may vary. My opinion is that if they were going to choose the live singing option, some of the actors should have been replaced with those who had better vocal stamina.

It's strange seing this because recently (when I posted this comment) Amanda says how much she regretted this because she felt like her singing was "weak" at the time, and that she would do it again if she had the chance, as she feels like her voice is ready now.

seriously .. singing live makes all the difference : very moving and vibrant. I love that version of Les Miserables. Amazing music (that'll stay in my head for long)... and great acting though: Crowe, Hathaway, Baron Cohen/Bonham Carter, Jackman... oh and Redmayne that I discovered more recently in Stephen Hawking movie. Cannot go wrong! Well done to all the team; I'll watch that movie again...!

I wish more people would comment on the incredible “A Little Fall of Rain.” I just sit there and bawl like a fool. Every single time. Like when I’m all like “dude, feelings are stuck in my eyeballs and they need to escape” I just turn on that scene and WHAM, all feelings escape out my eyes in the form of salty crocodile tears. She loves him so much and dying in his arms makes her whole empty life worthwhile and it’s so horrible and beautiful and painful and LIFE. Seriously.
