In conclusion, there are two kinds of performers in this movie: singers who can act AND actors who can sing. I don't believe anyone in this cast was truly 'bad.' Simply, they each have unique backgrounds and, therefore, assets that contributed to this ~film~. I emphasize ~film~ because it is important to remember a camera-shot and edited adaptation is different, and is meant to be different, from any live production. And in this light, I don't believe it is necessary nor necessarily fair to directly compare this film to any live production. They're entirely different worlds. Sure, one can have their preference, but it cannot be ignored that both have their advantages, as there are varying creative liberties a film offers that a live production doesn't, and vice versa--something Marc Daniel Patrick poignantly addressed in this video.

I think the tragedy with Russell Crowe is that he got really inconsistent vocal training for the role- in interviews, he talks about going to multiple vocal coaches to get it figured out, but voice lesson hopping isn't helpful because everyone has a different approach and preferences. Never mind the fact that there were way too many takes in general for this movie. I think that it doesn't have to do so much with him as much as the production team not giving him the right resources... still it was rough

I think Crowe, Jackman, and even Hathaway got screwed by the decision not to record the singing separately. These guys are decent singers (for actors). But they are just not strong singers.

Russell Crowe's acting for Javert was fantastic though! In fact the one thing I didn't enjoy about Javert in the movie was the silly staging of "Stars" and that wasn't even on him.

In many interviews over the years, Amanda has expressed disappointment in her vocal performance in this film. She trained opera for 2 years as a teen but haven’t sung classically since, plus her voice was in bad shape due to her smoking. She was working on another film before shooting Les Mis so she only had 3 months to rehabilitate her voice and relearn classical technique, so she was setup to fail imo. She said she wishes she can do it again as she has worked on her technique since. I also blame the live singing take after take, cause her vocals sound much better in the A Heart Full of Love reprise vs the one with Eponine.
@christydowns783
@christydowns783 2 жыл бұрын
I think the live singing wasn't controlled enough. I've seen interviews where some of the the actors did 20+ takes for one song and that's just overkill in my opinion. I actually like mistakes in live singing because it shows that it's live and not pre-recorded. I also think the actors should have been given more lead time as Eddie also hadn't sung since he was a kid
@benjjjjsin
@benjjjjsin 2 жыл бұрын
@@christydowns783 i love that they opted for live singing too, but it just doesn’t work in the ensemble pieces where they shot their scenes separately. Eddie Redmayne lied. There’s plenty videos of him singing as a teen. He took voice lessons at Eton and was a Tenor soloist in choir well throughout college. Amanda is the only one with no theater experience (and it shows).

In my first-impression review of the movie, I wrote, "If you want to listen to the music of Les Miz, you're better off pulling up the 10th anniversary special on youtube. The exception is Amanda Seyfried who acts and sings a better Cosette than Judy Kuhn." I think Cosette is one of the hardest roles to play in Les Miz because while Cosette is a featured character, the character is 2-dimensional and exists mainly as a plot device that ties the story together for other featured characters. Moreover, Cosette's singing parts don't give much for a musical theater professional to work with, and indeed, a Broadway-level pro like Judy Kuhn singing the part with conscious restraint can still overstep the outline of the character. If Seyfried's technical limitations as a singer restrained her performance as Cosette, that may have helped her play the role within the tight outline of the character better than more proficient musical theater professionals have.

Les Miserables is my all time favorite musical. The first time I ever saw it was with the original touring cast with Colm Wilkinson playing Jean Val-Jean. Now I realize that I am probably the only one that feels this way and that I will probably get slammed in the comments for saying this but I think Russel Crowe did a great job and I really liked his singing. Did he hit every note perfectly? No. But even Hugh Jackman seemed a bit flat at times. Really for me Russel Crowe was my second favorite performance after Samantha Barks. By the way I might as well say it Samantha Bark's performance of On My Own rivals even Lea Salonga and Frances Ruffelle herself.

BUT...Javert doesn't breathe. That's the entire point of the character. As a vocal coach myself...of course better breath support esp. relexation on the inhales would have helped him technically but for this character I kind of don't mind it as much, since Javert never relaxes. What breaks Javert in the end is his inability to be flexible. He is so set in what is "right" and "wrong" and in this picture of how "things have to be" and the shame he feels about being himself, that the minute he realizes that he's been wrong the entire time, and that the world has never truly has been or could be the way he sees it, he can't take it anymore. The moment he ends his life is the only one in the show where he gives up control because he doesn't trust himself anymore.

I love this song, but found the shifting scenes too choppy. Dang, now I have to go back and watch the 10th anniversary concert. Spot on about Eponine's songs - she definitely has the best songs in the show for a woman. Would love to see a reaction video focusing on the ensemble for a song - perhaps from Hamilton.

I love your channel because you are so positive regarding the performances. However, I am really looking forward to you critiquing some performances that are not so great- like Russell Crowe in Les Mis. As someone who is just starting to take voice lessons (very late in life!), hearing what someone did wrong will be a great insight :-)

Funny story: my parents bribed me to get good grades by buying Les Mis tickets when I was in homeschool and either I got good grades and went to the show or I had to pay them back for my ticket. Of course I got good grades. When the movie came out I was in college and the same deal was made 🤣 good grades and they'd take me to the movie. Yes's I was that theater kid that had to be bribed to pay attention to the rest of school. Thanks for putting this up!

I do agree that Russell Crowe can sing, however I think he really struggled with the timing of his part in this song. It's very evident in the video of the rehearsal for the 85th Academy awards. The cast had to sing "One day more" and although it looked like an informal rehearsal, all the big wigs were there (Cameron Macintosh, Claude Michel Schönburg, Alain Boublil). It looked like Claude Michel or the director helped him keep his beat during his parts. Everyone else there didn't seem to need any assistance other than Russell. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpe9mIKMabp7eLc Also, I'm curious to know what you think of this performance of the same song on the Good morning America set. This was when Ramin was playing Jean Valjean on Broadway: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4fIfKl-hteqbc0

I think other people have mention this however everyone in this cast has some kind of background in musical theatre be it with there training, or just in there family history and acting performances, the only one that doesn't is Russel crow, he is a lead singer in a band and his voice is trained to that pop idea more than musical theatre, sure before they started he did take lessons but he did it with several teachers and ofcource every teacher, teaches inslightly different ways which I think caused him Tobe confused in what he was doing causing what we had seen in the film and additionally it's very well known at this point that nothing apart from the orchestra was pre recorded and there for every actor is singing live which does in my opinion make scenes more lively and real especially since Les mis is sung through the problem is with that these performers worked long days and singing throughout which I also think contributed with the way crowe was singing in the final film, but if you look at some me of crowe's earlier and also later performances with him and his band he dose not sound like the way he does in this, he sounds like Somone who can professionally sing due to the style he is using and is a style he's worked on for years and has it tuned Myself I can not do anything outside musical theatre and opera due to being a baritone singer and not having the capability of any kind of pop singing capabilities as most songs are predominantly written in a tenor frame of mind

@@benjjjjsin I mean fair enough, I didn't know that about Russell, I know he's done theatre, but I hadn't known he's done musical theatre, like he's done alot of concerts from my knowledge, but fair enough and I mean Amanda has had a somewhat professional musical theatre and training when it came down the movie adaptation of Mama Mia, I was speaking from my knowledge that all stars in the film has had some kind of musical theatre or previous musical movie experience, but fair enough, what was some of the stuff Russel was in I wouldn't mind checking it out

@@scottradburn-acting794 Russel did a lot of musical theater in Australia and New Zealand. He was in a production of Rocky Horror Show, I think. As for Amanda, I don’t think the Mamma Mia movie would count as “musical theater training”. The cast did not undergo any vocal or dance training whatsoever during the production. They had more of a wing it approach, perhaps because they were singing pop songs.

I love this song, but the movie version doesn't do it for me. I think the cutting back and forth waters down the power of the song and diminishes its energy.. No goosebumps like you get from a staged version - at least not for me.
