Thank you for this video. My 60’s Les Paul Standard (2020) has binding over the fret ends. When I eventually have it refretted, the new ones will obviously not have binding on them. I’d like to go with larger frets. So I guess my non-question question is, that is one way to tell that a Les Paul has been refretted, due to the new fret ends not having binding on them.

Your work on the nut and the final product looks superb. I can't tell but it almost looks like you have enough overhang on the front shelf to do some compensation/intonation adjustment aka like an earvana. That's great on a Les Paul where the short scale always takes its toll on the g and b intonation on the first two or three frets.
@StringTechWorkstations2 жыл бұрын
I've never tried an Earvana or any other commercially available nut. The nut is just part of the equation. The lay-of-the neck / string gauge / scale length / tuning / fret condition / action preference .... imho ... too many variables ... to just plop a pre-made nut on and expect it to work. It may help slightly; but to get this level of precision, it is a full days work. Cheers Scott !
@spkay312 жыл бұрын
@@StringTechWorkstations Definitely agree. The custom angle of the string to the tuner that you use also makes the nut more stable for holding tune.

Beautiful work, thank you for including all your viewers in it. I have an epiphone les paul 1960 tribute plus, it needs some help. Its a beautiful guitar but the fretboard has just never been quite right. That age old story. What Kind of cost is involved in having the whole shebang done with compensated nut? I bought the guitar brand new in 13, most of its time has been spent in the case because of the fretboard issues. I'd love for it to play as nice as it looks.

Hello Michael great video and I have subscribed. I''m a newbie to fixing guitars have bought a few second hand Yamaha Acoustics to practice refretting on for myself really. I'm on my third refret job now but I notice that you don't use glue when refretting, other videos I watch do this, is there any need to glue new Frets in? It actually can be a little messy, though I am careful you can still see the stain on the Fretboard even though I try to wipe the superglue off as quick as possible.
@StringTechWorkstations2 жыл бұрын
Welcome aboard Ned ! I prefer a good mechanical fit. There are times where glue is desired if the mechanical fit needs some help. There are many who use glue. Just a personal preference. Both methods work well when executed properly.

Hi Allen. Oftentimes a drop of super glue ( Like PRS ) on the two outside edges is enough. If the fit is sloppy ... you may have to resort to 5 minute epoxy ( I hold the frets down with capos until the glue is set ). Good Luck ! MMcC

I try to get it as "laser-straight " as possible ... then back off the truss rod a 1/4 turn. Action at the 12th fret low E string is 7/64" / High e 5/64". I start there ... then adjust minutely, to the customers preference.

Pole pieces in guitar pickups are silly. How many guitarists do you know that NEVER bend a string? Bend a string and the pole piece is no longer aligned. A blade style pickup is superior, whether you use a magnet for the blade or use a permeable material for the blade.
@StringTechWorkstations3 жыл бұрын
Usually with the LP custom ... the pole spacing is wider at the bridge pickup ... for some reason this one isn't. If the string is within 3/8" distance the pole will pick it up ... not a big deal ... but a bit disappointing for a guitar of this value.
