I think a show like Mr. Les Paul’s could really be a hit. Even if it’s just local-yocals in a band, as long as they actually have substance in the music and the stories. The amount of talent that passes through a city can be rather surprising. Every genre and age range… heck even an okay band with a well spoken sound guy telling the stories. I saw some crazy stuff and met some rather big names in rock and country music in Abilene Tx. I wish I would have not drank as much as I did, I spent more than I earned most weekends. My favorite times though where after we got everything torn down and loaded up for the night or weekend and go to a local place to get a bite to eat with the band members(never really lead singers) some fun, crazy and weird stories.. like the drummer who showed up with a G string to perform in but zero drum sticks. They brought plenty wooden chairs to cut up during the set for all the stops though, lol.

I've heard a couple of interview tapes and some behind the scenes recordings of Buddy Rich back in his band days Talking to his agents and band members, and yes he was a genius drummer but he was also one big prick to most people and I mean really mean-spirited. In his day you grew up tough and mean but he took it to an extreme, he was not a nice man!

Yes: Buddy DID happen to want to play guitar in the mid-60's. I remember reading an article in the L.A. Times (an interview) and he states that he is studying guitar but that it was very difficult, due to the fact that the "muscular action" required to play guitar is "the exact OPPOSITE of that required for playing drums! Threrefore he was getting frustrated with learning the instrument! (My impression anyway). This was in a 1967 L.A. TIMES interview with Buddy. ( Buddy was appearing in town somewhere I think it was at the "CHEZ" Club in West Hollywood). I wish I still had that article!

I remember back in the late 60's or early 70's, I think it was, Buddy was having back problems and decided to quit the drums and perform as a singer. That was an odd choice for a guy who generally disliked singers. That didn't last too long. He took up karate and he credits that with helping his back.

Buddy actually released three LPs, singing and tap dancing: "Buddy Rich Just Sings," "Sing and Swing With Buddy Rich," and "Buddy Rich Sings Johnny Mercer." His song-and-dance act theme song was, "Hey, Buddy--Rich Am I." He even appeared on a few TV shows, singing and dancing. But even before than, back in the early 50s, Buddy played with Charlie Ventura's Big Four (the others were Chubby Jackson and Marty Napoleon) and recorded at least one vocal with them. On the EP I have, he sings "Love Is Just Around the Corner." When he was with Harry James a few years later, they used to break people up when Harry would play drums while Buddy sang. He was a credible singer, but just lacked that certain something that marks a true vocalist. But I bet he's play dark eyes before! He's a petulant little child with no clue I've seen his interviews and he destroys his drum set every time he opens up his mouth.
