I think the D’Angelico held its own against the Gibson. Great tones and a much better price. Nothing against the Les Paul, but I’d rather have other one in my arsenal and spend the rest of my money on a killer amp

Agreed!! I feel the D'Angelico held it's own. I recently purchased a premier cause I needed a contrasting tone to my Strat. I didn't want to play a thousand LP's to find a good one...

I've heard too many other guitars that easily hold their own with Les Pauls to be surprised by this. The hype is threadbare by now. I'd buy the D'Angelico in a heartbeat.

Let me know which features and tones you guys liked the best! I think both guitars sound great, but the SD '59s in the Deluxe Atlantic have a more classic creamy LP tone than the BB pros in the Gibson Standard which can be quite bright!

I have to say the Gibson Les Paul sounded richer, with more depth to me - particularly on the arpeggios - not so much difference in the mix. For all its 'faults' (weight, comfort, playability), I would rather have the Gibson - although not in the market for one at the moment as I have a PRS 594

It's interesting that you say the D'Angelico had the creamier tone. That didn't come across to me over my headphones. What I noticed was the pronounced high-end snarl that the D-Angelico had when it was overdriven. It made me think more of a Gretch or SG. Overall, I didn't think it had near the same depth as the Les Paul to its tone. Where the D'Angelico shone for me was on the jazziness of the neck pickup. I liked that better than the Les Paul. However, I thought the Les Paul was better on the overdrive and the arpeggios. Then again, that midrange tone of the Les Paul is what I love so much about it. The D'Angelico is a beautiful guitar and produces some nice tones, but the Les Paul is the more versatile instrument...unless you're trying to play it for long periods of time. :)

I have a Dangelico Atlantic premier. It's the model priced below the deluxe in this video. The Atlantic Premier runs for $699, although you can always get it cheaper. It looks exactly like the Deluxe except that it has silver tuners and trim instead of gold. It also has Seymour Duncan assembled in Asia pickups and not true SD pickups (I couldn't tell the difference sonically). I was convinced that it was time to upgrade from the Dangelico Premier Atlantic and I just bought a 2019 Les Paul Standard 60's version for $2500. I just spent the past hour playing both and I hate to say it but the Dangelico still sounds better (I dont play metal or REALLY dirty) I'm pretty bummed that the LP is going back but I guess I will have $2500 to spend on something else.

Price doesn't equal tone these days... with Asian guitars getting so good now. I borrowed a cheap d angelo hollow body from my cousin for awhile... and it sounded and played as good as any high end guitar I have. I'm sure this atlantic is no exception. Some Gibson's sound really good though. I had one with bb pro pickups and it sounded brittle and cold... but some with different pickups sound epic. But overpriced for sure. But not as overpriced as my PRS guitars lol... but if you want a certain tone you need the guitar that has it....

I understand and I completely agree with your position, friend. If you're not happy with a guitar, you shouldn't keep it just because of name recognition. I own several D'Angelico's and my favorite is the Deluxe Ludlow, which I think is discontinued now, but you can still find it in guitar store inventory all over the place. I also own a Gibson Les Paul Standard, which I have had for many years, but I don't play it nearly as much as any of my D'Angelico's. I do love my Gibson, but I will tell you that as much as I love it, I love my D'Angelico's at least ten-times more! I purchased my first one because I found it priced too low to pass up. When I got it home, I immediately found that even the lower priced models are heavy contenders! Shortly after, and because I was so impressed, I spent a bit more money and upgraded to a Deluxe model. And, with twelve guitars in my home today, my go-to guitars are always my D'Angelico's. This is the thing that I have realized and finally admitted to myself.... As good as Gibson, Fender or any other staple brand, happen to be, most of these companies are now shells of the companies that they used to be. Even companies like Taylor and Martin don't produce guitars at the same level as they did 30-years ago, because they are producing in heavy volume. Today, their business is more about quantity and less about quality. These companies need to produce high volume, so the quality is going to suffer when you're mass-producing. Even their handmade guitars will suffer because their luthiers are under pressure to produce faster. I own my Gibson because it was one of the first quality guitars I purchased back in the day....If I had to make the decision to day, I am sure my collection would be minus a Gibson!

@@RumbleFish69 thanks for the info! I've been eyeing these deluxe models for awhile but never played one. I just ordered another Gibson with different pickups and neck wood than my last Gibson... hopefully I like it. I really need to play a d'angelico solid body deluxe... to possibly add to my collection... they look awesome. I would have bought the hollow body from my cousin but for some reason I gravitate towards the solid body sound more for my style of playing... plus most hollow bodies are big and ugly lol...

I recently discovered dangelico at the local store and it was this same model. I couldn’t believe how delicious the tone was and it is one of the most comfortable guitars I’ve ever held!!! It was a used one for $650, the sticker in the back said “made in Indonesia” but I thought it was a prank and I had to double check with employees to make sure it wasn’t a mistake! This guitar feels and sounds like an exotic top dollar instrument! Brand new I think it’s a bit over $800 and I’m already saving money to buy it.

If I would make a purchase choice I would have to go with the D'Angelico... yes, the lesPaul was a bit brighter but we could have gotten that tone by injecting some single coil push/pull action... Ooops! Paulie can't do that (stock)... So yea, Great comparison... They are two different animals. Thanks again Darrell! Love the Dire Straights thingy....

D’Angelico wins for me as I love smooth Jazzy tones, plus the fact it feels easier to play. I suspect you could get similar tones on the LP, with the same SD pick ups. It would be interesting to swap the pick ups over on these two guitars? Have you any other humbucker guitars you can compare it with? You don’t need to do a video, but if you did you could incorporate this one, with a few other guitars/videos if you have them? Thanks for your efforts, great job!

I swear by D'Angelico! I own several D'Angelico's ranging from modestly priced to top of the line, slightly more expensive models. Even on the higher priced end, there is no beating the price for a top-line D'Angelico! And, even with a Gibson, Les Paul in my collection, the D'Angelico has become my go-to guitar. My favorite D'Angelico, because of it's versatility, is the Deluxe Ludlow, which I believe is discontinued. A player can go from Blues to Jazz to Grunge, without missing a beat! Now, this is not to say that my Gibson goes unused, or that I don't love it, but I have just found that whether I am playing out, or in session, I use my Deluxe Ludlow more than any other guitar I own. I simply love the tones and these guitars are also a super treat to look at! In fact, I get more compliments with my D'Angelico than any other guitar I own.

I thought they both sounded great, until the arpeggios, where I thought the LP smoked the D'Angelico. But if the guitar that wins is the one that you decide to pick up and play and not the one that you leave hanging on the wall because it's chunky and heavy, that's a different story... The real winner is the one that you want to play right now, tomorrow, and the day after that.

Just getting caught up on the videos from the past few weeks so first I have to say that I love the intro. Very nicely put together. As for this video, it may be sacrilege but I found the Atlantic to be much more pleasing to my ear. I will say that tonally they were much more similar than I had anticipated though. That’s my two cents and it’s worth exactly what you’ve paid for it. Keep up the great work.

Hello, I am quite surprised of this comparison. The D'Angelico makes me think of Telecaster Deluxe: flat top with pickguard, 2 vintage humbuckers, thin body, belly cut. Differences are the head with tuners not in line, and set neck with shaped heel joint. About this tone comparison, my taste goes to the BB pros of the Les Paul, more modern, less vintage. If I was a gigging musician , I would choose the Telecaster Deluxe or a Stratocaster. Being a guitar lover, your blue Les Paul is awesome. I dislike the bizarre shape of this D'Angelico, the weird head shape. Price wise , my preference for an American telecaster deluxe. Anyway, interesting comparison and demo , thanks Darrell 👍

Having BEEN a Gibson player for about 35 years (mostly LP Customs and Standards) about a year ago I was introduced to a D'angelico Excel DC...and was COMPLETELY blown away in every aspect. I since have acquired several Excel DC's (their version of a ES335), a few Excel SS's (think Howard Robert's Fusion), 2 EX-SD and 2 Deluxe Atlantics (to replace a few of my higher end Les Pauls). I even jumped on their acoustic bandwagon, purchasing 2 Excel Gramercys! These D'angelico's are ALL KILLER GUITARS, at a third of Gibson's price!!! Do yourselves a favor and go out and try one for yourselves. You will undoubtedly experience exactly what I did, and buy it immediately!

This comparison is not one in which a clear winner emerges... Yes, they are different, but both sounded good. My take is that D'Angelico can modernize an old shape / features and not incur the wrath of Les Paul fans, which is what has happened every time in recent history that Gibson has tried to do that. Many (most?) Les Paul fans are surely the most staid, even curmudgeonly guitarists, which is a shame. So, hats off to D'Angelico for improving on a standard form. To wrap up, I think the Gibson will have a good resale value even years from now... The D'? Time will tell, but I'd be willing to bet the resale value of those guitars will be nowhere near as good as the Les Paul. Still, I buy guitars to play and gig with, not to resell, and if were in the market for that type of instrument I think I'd rather play the D'Angelico.

3 yrs later: I've got my D'Angelico (Deluxe Brighton) in my lap now. Swamp ash body with a maple top, Seth Lovers, ebony fretboard, actual mother-of-pearl and abalone inlays. Absolutely love it. I also have my Les Pauls. That Standard you're playing is unlike any Standard I've ever seen. I'm guessing it's an exclusive edition with that top, no pickguard, clear knobs, and BB Pros? Anyway, they are two completely different beasts and I generally prefer the effortless power and sustain of my Les Pauls, likely owing to the mass. In the case of the Brighton, one look quickly screams SG. It's brighter and sustains less. And is probably the more versatile guitar, totally depends on your style on that. But man, they are incredible. The neck/body joint is seductive. You just love holding it there when you're in between songs (like SGs, it's neck heavy), and the upper fret access is insane.

If i were to be offered my choice for free, i choose the Gibson, just because..., However if we are spending MY hard earned cash I grab the D'angelico, and then use the leftover cash for a decent amp and pedal and get a bigger variety of tone, while playing a more comfortable instrument.

NICE! I found this looking for reviews on D'Angelico because I saw a solid body Premier TD for $300.00. I have to say I didn't find much on that model but I bought it anyway. They claimed it was in good condition but IMO it's basically brand new probably NOS. I have to say it's an amazing guitar and the tear drop/LP style is pretty cool. The D'angelico is a great sounding guitar. I like the thinner body that's much like a LP Junior and the price point is right on these. Thanks for sharing, I will have to check in of these out. 🎶🎸🎶

I could hear a clear difference between the neck and bridge pickups on the LP. On the DA almost sounded the same.

I thought they sounded very similar, with the Gibson being slightly brighter, which surprised me. I just can't get over how beautiful that D'Angelico is though.

That's an inescapable outcome anytime the necks are set into the body like that. I've got a Brighton, which is very similar but with double cutaways. It's a Deluxe with Seth Lovers and it's a spectacular guitar in every sense. I use a nice soft suede-backed strap and don't have an issue with the neck-heavy nature of the beast. Same thing with my SGs.

Well that was a surprise---to me anyway. If I was listening with my eyes shut I would have sworn the D'Angelico was a Les Paul and the Les Paul was a cheaper alternative, if that makes sense.

You keep adding fuel to the wood debate! Hands down I'd take the D.A. Over Gibson. Not a Gibson fan, not to take away from the legacy, but don't believe they are still the best , just an original. I've had many guitars over the years that I thought were on par if not better!

That Les Paul is the old junk they used to make. I just purchased my first Atlanta and I'll receive it tomorrow. We'll see how good these guitars really are. I bought the all brand new supro 1605 RJ. It's a beast. By far the best amp I've ever owned. Great video thank you

When I seen all those Deangelico guitars up on the high wall at GC last week I thought , This company has a plan to get a bigger slice of the market pie . These videos are definitely helping that cause :0) I'd pick the Deangelico over the Gibson for several reasons. Tones are first , since I love warm over bright and the clarity was certainly there too. Then there's price ,looks ,playability of the neck and of course that tummy cut :0) .. Even the most basic LTD has a tummy cut . Some things are really important to us older guys 😁😁😁

Great comparison. Would love to get your thoughts on the Yamaha Revstar series. They seem to fall somewhere in between these two guitars with the mahogany body/maple top, but thinner body than the Les Paul with arm and body contours. They have models with humbuckers, P90s, and Trons. Thanks as always for the great content!

Thanks for the comparison, Darrell. I hadn't checked you out in a long time, since I purchased a Wolf Les Paul copy at the bargain price of $350 w/traveling hard shell case. To my ears the Atlantic was far more caressing to the acoustic nerve. Even the "clean" in the Les Paul had too much sawtooth wave. To me the fatter the sound the sweeter the tone. And the Atlantic was definitely FAT! ☺

The D'Angelico, hands down. Over the years, I've held onto my 1969 Les Paul, which I scrambled and scraped to buy in that fateful year, but, honestly, I've kept it primarily for sentimental value, for memories. The Les Paul models have a fantastic image, but they're overly heavy, uncomfortable sitting or standing and, frankly, a bit crude. (If you want a vintage Gibson, rob orphans and widows, if that's what it takes, to get an old Byrdland--my '69 Byrd is the finest guitar I've ever touched.) Okay, back to the issue at hand. For all-around playing, D'Angelico guitars are finely made, handsomely finished--and comfortable (I play an Excel mini DC, which, once you get used to the heavy head dropping down, actually turns our to be an ergonomically excellent guitar). Every player has his or her own tastes and quirks, but, in their price range, I find D'Angelico guitars to be unbeatable--and gorgeous. But what about the sound? You just heard it. Richer, more-versatile sound from the D'Angelico. While one side of me is chauvinist and rooting for Gibson, it's just not the company it was fifty to sixty years ago. I hope Gibson gets it together, but, in my view, the company is living on yesteryear's rep. D'Angelico designs are intelligent, functional and realized with very high quality builds. As for Gibson, well, I wish I'd kept my 1970 ES-335, instead of hanging on to the Les Paul. Dumbest music-related decision I've ever made. In more-human terms, the Les Paul looks sexy, but the D'Angelico IS sexy.

Wonder how the D'Angelico ATLANTIC would sound in comparison to the Ultimate Epi? Both have Seymour Duncan PU's (albeit the P-Rails in the Epi) and comparing the splits as well as the humbucker tones would be interesting. Thanks for another great vid.

D'Angelico sounds very good! Maybe that Sd humbuckers give it the right power to 'beat' the standard. But as I use to say, guitar's sound is the result of wood employed, building characteristics and electronics. Then there's a right guitar for every kind of music you want to play.

D'Angelico clearly proves here that you don't have to pay astronomical sums to get a good guitar that you can be happy with. I really hope that D'Angelico will stick to this great pricing policy that doesn't bankrupt the guitarist. Frankly, I didn't have D'Angelico guitars on my radar for a long time, but I've since become a fan, owning two guitars of this brand myself and playing them with enthusiasm. With D'Angelico, the price-performance ratio is just right, there's nothing more to add. Musical greetings from Germany Mic

I thought the Dangelico sounded brighter overall with a snappier high end and more of a defined bottom end. I think I just don't like burstbuckers at all. I also think I'm gonna buy a Dangelico very soon. I just gotta decide between the two models. Kinda like the other one more than the single cut but I need the singlecut more for the two humbuckers. So idk. Time will tell along with my G.A.S!!!
