Both sound good, PRS pickups gives the guitar a little bit more crisp and lighter tone, but both can give you what you need in different situations, no doubt about that! Thank you for making your comparison video for us all to hear. And you are right, both are worth holding them live and testing them out. I have a green PRS SE Starla!

Just opened my Atlantic Premier today! I love all the sounds and my smaller hands can lock chords in with ease. Ordered a set of jb/59 Duncans and still came in under the price of the Deluxe Atlantic.

Are you still enjoying it? After reading "small hands" I was paying attention cause I also have small hands.. My problem is that my hand cramps after 1 hour of playing my Ibanez D shape neck, so I wonder if that D'Angelico fits maybe better cause of the shorter scale and the C shape neck?? For me it's all about the neck that makes a guitar a good guitar..

@@Chris_OConnor I really like playing that guitar. It just fits. I tend to play it more than my stratocaster simply because the neck fits so good.

I have three PRS guitars and love them but this time I think D’Angelico sounded more in my taste, better mid tones. The PRS sounded a little “dead”. I like the sound in my PRS 35th with the TCI S pickups but not so much the 85/15 pickups in my latest PRS. Great for clean chords but lack mid for blues solos. I’m tempted to try this D’Angelico some day. Very nice playing and test! 👌

You’re complicating my guitar life! Just ordered a Starla to compare to the Mira I just got, which I thought sounded a little dead. Thought I’d return one or both depending on how it goes. Now I have to add that gorgeous D’Angelico to the mix. My wife is going to think I’ve taken complete leave of my senses. Great review. Your stuff is always very timely and useful. Tasteful playing without effects. Always amazed at guys who do guitar reviews with a ton of delay or chorus added. Your reviews always give a representative sound. Thanks!

I love my PRS SE STARLA 😍 I picked up mine used and knew it was a good guitar because it's a PRS, but I wasn't expecting that! Best guitar in that price range and for sure my favorite out of my collection and the cheapest.

Great demo...by an excellent guitarist. I bought the Starla four months ago. I love it. It is one of the most comfortable guitars I have ever played. The fit and finish are excellent. (Powder Blue...gorgeous!) I had it professionally set up with D'Addario 9s and it plays like a dream. I am a blues-traditional rock-Motown player (through a 1966 Fender Band Master) and I can get all of the tones I need. The coil split works very well and in single coil mode the bridge pickup sounds almost like an acoustic guitar. No problems with it staying in tune. I paid just over $600 and it is worth every penny. My other guitars are a 72 Telecaster Thinline Reissue (MIM) and a Ibanez jazz box.

I have a PRS Starla SE! Amazing quality guitar! Very well built. Only has some tuning issues, but if you change/work the nut (and tuners), it should be fixed. I'm working on that right now. AMAZING GUITAR! And yes, I'm saying it owning higher cost guitars and with aftermarket (branded) pickups. It's a truly good guitar! Only Con: The tuner issue, and maybe having 1 volume / 1 tone knob. Looking forward to making a review soon!

The PRS 85/15S pickups on most of the other PRS SEs are probably closer in sound to the Duncans on the D'Angelico. The Starla pickups are designed to be a brighter more jangly kind of humbucking pickup.

Great demo, exploring the full realm of tones on each guitar. I bought a Mira a couple weeks ago and love it. O really dig the Mira's double cut look. I really like the chime that the Starla has compared to the D'A. The single coil tones are sweeter on the Starla as well. I don't like the ornate headstock on the D'A. Looks gaudy And I much prefer the bird inlays on the PRS. Thanks for a great demo and review!

Seemed you were feeling the D'Angelico more when playing. I think the song and style of jam fit the thick sound of D'Angelico better in this case.

They are both impressive guitars if I went with the D"angelico I would go with the Deluxe version with upgraded Duncuns C shape radius 14 neck instead of PRS wide fat neck. Both sound like great guitars so it comes down to ergonomics. The PRS surprise me weighing a little less for Mahogany not bad thought the Basswood would weigh less. Still PRS surprised me coming out with this guitar hadn't thought of them doing this although De'Angelico was since last year. Thanks very well done demo great playing as usual. Never know maybe I might change my mind then the last piece the D'Angelico with the classic short scale vs. 25", D'Angelico wins. 👍😎

The DeAngelico sounds a little bit thicker, muddier, especially in humbucker mode. The PRS sounds clearer, a little more percussive, less weighty sound - probably would sound better clean than the DA. That being said they both are incredible instruments. I would probably go for the PRS in terms of versatility. But the DA is just as amazing. Just personal preference.

The PRS is definitely a more usable tone The Duncan designed pickups sound like they always have, a pure puddle of mud. PRS on the other hand has vastly improved their import pickups in the last few years.

i couldn't disagree with you more. While obviously the tones are different, to say that one is "definitely" more "usable" than the other is not accurate in my opinion. They both sound incredible. It's all a matter of personal taste.

I think PRS is now chasing DAngelico. It seems pretty apparent that they tried to make an exact replica. I am a bit of a tone chaser, but those guitars sound exactly alike to me.
