Like some kind of surreal soundtrack, this music is largely exuberant but also, at times, ever-so slightly disturbing (Milhaud particularly). Each contribution is crafted with consummate skill and clearly influenced by the remarkable Satie. Auric had quite a career in film music in France and in the UK (Ealing Comedies, for instance). Tailleferre, the sole female of the group, has written, arguably, the two most interesting pieces here but is, sadly, the least remembered of Les Six....

Evening Max, Louis Durey would have the distinction of being the least remembered. He contributed a piece to L'Album des Six for piano but I haven't heard anything else by him.

Rodders, Just to prove you right.....I'd completely forgotten about him!!!

Morning Max. If Le Six could be compared to the mighty handful, Durey would be the equivalent of Cui.

Max, I have difficulty reconciling Honegger to the aesthetic of Cocteau & Les Six but not for his nationality, just that I find his music so bleak.

Rodders, I quite liked Honegger when I was devouring music in the 1970s, but I have to be honest and say I rarely listen to much by him now, apart from "Pastorale d'Ete" and "Pacific 231".
