I appreciate the recommendation. When it comes to works from this period, or other cultures in general, sometimes I find it overwhelming to decide on a translation or edition that is the "best" one. So, I end up frustrated and I don't buy anything. So, this is a huge help.

I have read & adored fragments of Sappho in other literature down through the years. (Loved the poem to Gabby in XWP) Not read this book, though. I think you would flip if you could get your hands on a book of poems called Sapphic Songs: Seventeen to Seventy by Elsa Gidlow. 1976 Lesbianism - Poetry, Diana Press. The poems range from the early 1900s to 1974. In the heart of woman who love woman, as you say, not much has changed. 'Elsa Gidlow was a British-born, Canadian-American poet, freelance journalist, philosopher and humanitarian. She is best known for writing On a Grey Thread, the first volume of openly lesbian love poetry published in North America.' 1898-1986. My copy was given to me by a woman, who if she were alive would be over 100 years old today.

I love that book. And I actually I like that we only have fragments of her work. Would she be so famous and have stayed relevant all these years if we had all of her work at our disposal ? I think it works in her favor.

Thank you for this review! I’ve really wanted to learn more about Lesbian history and Sappho’s work, but found it rather difficult to know where to start, until now. “SOLD, to the lady sitting in the back corner of the room!” Much appreciated.
