I’m French from around Paris and I still managed to be scammed myself… even knowing the basics. One key rule : always remain calm. As stated the driver can get aggressive and hence temper with your ability to defend yourself. Just remember the rules keep calm and refuse anything unusual. Recording with the phone is also a really good advise. I’ll recommend the video to my friends from abroad 😊

I needed this a couple weeks ago. A guy in the official Taxi zone was trying to charge us 85 euros for a trip between Gare Nord and Gare St Lazare. This was after being approached by all the Fake taxi drivers hanging out at the front of the station. A very nice woman told us the official Taxi stand was not at the front of the building and walked us to where we could see it. She also told off a couple guys that were hounding us. I think that was they only real problem we had in 21 days of European travel. When we got back from Normandy we saw the Taxi stand in front of the Hilton Hotel where the doorman was vetting the taxis. This driver told us 55 euros to the Holiday Inn Express on the airport property. He explained the small extra tariff for the very high traffic, explaining in limited English that when it rains in Paris everyone is driving if they have a car. So if you are exiting Gare St Lazare, turn left towards the Hilton. That’s my new hack. Doormen know who is legiit.

It is definitely possible to be scammed by a legit taxi driver. These types really seem to not care about losing their medallion as they would truly risk scamming the public for a few extra euro. Happened to us first time in decades in 2012 when a legit taxi driver pretended that we shortchanged him when we arrived at our destination.

Great advice from Les Frenchies once again, listen to them! I've found over the decades going to Paris, that a private hired car is easiest experience, but the taxi is also easy to use, the RER (light rail) is probably best option at or near rush hour as Paris traffic is horrible and getting worse. Les Frenchies have a video on using the RER/Metro and it is a must watch that explains the process in detail.

Hi Guys, yet another informative video. However, may I suggest that the public transport system in Paris is so good (even from the airports into the town centre) that the best advice is never to to get into a taxi - the metro/RER is surely always a better bet. I used to travel to Paris two or three times per month on business (with almost no limit on reasonable expenses) and I only once took a taxi, and thereafter chose to take public transport, which is always a better option in my opinion.
@solracer66 Жыл бұрын
Except if you have a lot of luggage, the Metro/RER is fine if you have a single carryon bag but it can be a lot of work hauling bigger bags onboard or on connecting Metro trains. The Air France bus used to be my go-to choice but sadly it's been discontinued with only city buses or the Roissybus left and which may not be as convenient if you are heading to the left bank as it only goes to the Opera.
@MultiSUPERLATIVO Жыл бұрын
@kevinramsden62 Totally agree. RER (Charles de Gaulle to downtown Paris) or bus if you arrive through Orly Airport (Orly Bus). You can easily buy a Navigo Découverte ticket at the airport. This prevents people from falling into the hands of scammers.

Japan where taxis are more regulated has a telltale sign that licensed taxis will have commercial green license plates. Private standard vehicles have white license plates with green text. Ridesharing is illegal, but you can still use Uber which will send a licensed city cab. Airports post these travel warnings. The real danger there is to watch for bar touts in the red light district connected to crime syndicates. Claiming you will have a good time, female staff, hourly drinks until you're surprised by the bill.

I have to jump in here and give a good Paris taxi story. My wife and I were at Versailles 10 years ago and when we rented a rowboat she ended falling in the water when the guy didn't hold the boat to the dock when we got back. So rather than take the train back I approached a taxi driver in the line at the station to take us back. He quoted us an acceptable price and didn't complain at all that she was still a little damp. When we got back to the area of our hotel near the Canal St Martin he realized that the street direction had been reversed necessitating a longer drive so he could approach from the correct direction. He apologized profusely and when the meter hit the agreed upon price he reached over and shut it off. When we got to the hotel about 10 minutes later I paid the fare and then offered him a tip of around 10%. He flat out refused, even when I offered a second time and seemed quite embarrassed that he'd had to extend our journey that extra 10 minutes. So not all Paris taxi drivers are bad, some are fantastic! That said my wife had to stay overnight in Paris recently because she missed her connection and was scammed for her ride to the airport and was charged double the going rate. That probably wouldn't have happened if I had been there or I'd briefed her on the rules in Paris but as she wasn't planning to stop there I didn't do that. I'm off to Paris myself later this summer and you can bet I'll either take the train or use the official taxi stands!

Thank you for doing this video! I wish I had seen this before my first trip to France… Last month, I was a victim of an official taxi driver in Paris who said it was a flat €62 from Gare du Nord to the the 7th Arr. (Scam #1: he was charging me the flat rate from CDG, there’s no flat rate from GDN). We only had about €25 on us and asked to pay with a card, he said he didn’t accept cards (Scam #2: they must always accept cards) so he drove us to an ATM to get cash. I thought going out of my way to get an official taxi would be a safe bet, but definitely not. And Gare du Nord did not have the helpful signs that CDG has. I always recommend snapping a photo of the taxi with license plate as well as the driver or his taxi license. I did file a complaint after I found out I was ripped off, but I know nothing will come of it. I just wanted the authorities to have a data point that it was happening, even if all I could provide was the make/model of the car and drivers description. This was my first trip to a country where English is to prevalent so I was overwhelmed by trying to communicate with him. I suspect he actually did speak English more than he pretended and was just trying to prevent me from asking questions.

Great video, but I recommend taking the RER since the price is way below the taxi rate and you have none of the hassles explained here. It only takes a little research to find out how to use it and it is very straightforward. If your destination is not on the RER lines, you will find an easy connection on the métro to get you close. However, if you have a lot of baggage (big mistake) take their advice on the Taxi.

We got caught out with our first taxi experience in Germany. It was night time and we were busy being tourists and looking around when we noticed we were passing a building that looked familiar. The driver had taken us on a multi lap tour of the same part of the city. From then on daughter sat in the front with street maps on her phone. No more long detours. Another scam was putting luggage in the boot/trunk. More than once they tried to charge us with luggage handling. We didn’t pay! Mentioned this to a driver when we were in Amsterdam and he was livid! Said we should have reported him as they have similar rules as the Netherlands. Only got caught the once!

From my recollection (and it was sometime ago now) the meter rates do change significantly during different parts of the day. Finally, even though the company might pay for the taxi ride, I often used the rail/RER which is reasonably fast and connects with many metro routes…..and certainly during rush hour avoids traffic jams ….. obviously not particularly convenient if with many heavy suitcases

When he showed up there was already a 12e fee on the meter for having to drive from where he was to come get me. When i asked him to open the trunk for me to put my luggage in he said it was another 10e fee to use his trunk so i guess he expected me just to cram my luggage in the back seat with me. We could not find the blue squared taxi sign and were hustled by a man saying that he'll bring us to a taxi. We followed him a couple of feet and when he showed us the taxi, it was an old beat up and thirty car. I told him very firmly that we decided not to take it and walked back to the area in front of Gard du Nord. We looked very carefully for the official blue squared taxi sign and we FINALLY found it. IT WAS LOCATED ACROSS THE STREET ON THE LEFT SIDE as we came out of Gare du Nord main entrance next to Richmond Hotel by Paris Nora Cafe. It was not easy to find the official taxi stand. Gard du Nord management should make a bigger sign and have directions on the ground to the official taxi stands for the safety of its customers.

This first rule applies worldwide. Never ever hop on a car from a driver who'd approached you inside any airport, everywhere! But I disagree with the tipping part. No offense, but that's a flawed system mostly prevailing in the US which other nations get quite annoyed of. Tipping in Europe, Latin America, or anywhere else is only expected after an extraordinary service that really knocked your socks off.

Queuing at a taxi stand is NOT a guarantee against abuse. After standing in line for nearly half an hour at the Gare du Nord I got into a taxi driven by a Vietnamese. When he found out my destination he began swearing that it was too close and I could have walked--which was not true, especially if you have no idea where you are going and are lugging a suitcase and a box. He continued swearing the entire trip, even though the traffic jams were making progress slow and the meter was still running. He refused my offer of a generous tip and told me to just get out. In hindsight, once he started swearing I should have gotten out and gotten back in line. He would really have been screwed. I also should have taken a snapshot of his license, but filing a complaint would have been more trouble than it was worth. In the 15+ trips I have made to France--I have an M.A in French--I can count the "cons (it's a French word)" I've encountered on one hand, and the two that I remember were this one Vietnamese and an Algerian.
