La Bourse et La Vie is one of Chef Daniel Rose's restaurants. He is one of the most inventive, amazing chefs ever ~ very creative, but also kind, generous and humble. He mostly lives in NYC now where he has a Michelin Star restaurant in Manhattan called Le CouCou. His original restaurant was a tiny place in the 9th called Spring and remains one of my favourite Parisian restaurants ever. Thanks for a great video!

Just came back from Paris (17dec - 23 dec). My wife and I walked 26 min to eat lunch at La Bourse et la Vie and it was outstanding. I started with the oysters followed by the steak frites filet au poive and finished with the lemon sorbet - c'est magnifique! We had the waiter in the video. He was friendly, provided excellent service, and spoke English. Served me the chocolate mousse (outstanding) by accident instead of the sorbet, kept it off the bill - yes! the sorbet and mousse were so good, I ate both. This meal was one of the highlights of our trip. Thank you Les Frenchies - would have never found this restaurant, but I am glad you recommended it.

The Relais de l'entrecote is actually a copy cat chain (and there are multiple others in many towns, including Stockholm). The original version is the Relais de Venise at Porte Maillot and you should try that one because they are the one with the "secret sauce" and it doesn't look like the one you were served because...it's not the secret sauce !! Lazare is a wonderful place that I had forgotten about and I need to go back. I also highly recommend their cookbook (Lazare by Eric Fréchon).

Thank you so much for what you do. You make being Americans in France feel so natural. (I’ve learned what not to do…again and again ;) And your appreciation of French food is wonderful and instructive. For those of use who are learning French it is wonderful when you speak French and then repeat in English next so we can learn in a natural setting. I follow some people JUST for this habit so that I can learn to speak…please keep it up. Thank you again.

We went here too. We only had 5 days in Paris (we were in Europe for 5 weeks with 7 cities) so 9th could eat at one of these places. I thought I would “nibble” so not to be full for later (we went at lunch) but it was SOOO good! The fries and that sauce! Chef’s Kiss! I bet the other places are just as good!

I find Le Relais de Venise at 271 Bd Pereire, 75017 Paris, France to be better, but you still have to wait in line.
@holyfox94Ай бұрын
Thing is, all the all you can eat Steak frites places buy mediocre beef. They brine it to death, like in Chinese restaurants and ppl are happy, because it’s tender. Taste wise, the sauce does the job. That’s all OK, because it keeps these restaurants affordable. It’s just not top tier quality and I kind of feel sorry for the tourists who think this is the real deal. Interestingly, ppl rather queue than making a reservation in a small good bistrot. Must be language anxiety.

I’m back to Austin Texas and something that made my trip sound was taking Uber . By all means , if you can afford an Uber in America , do it in Paris . I didn’t want to have the stress about those pickpockets in the metro .I stayed in Montmartre and I knew how far places were and from €9-18 ride wasn’t bad at all . I didn’t have any specific restaurant but I came across some historical ones . People in South of France and Paris were adorable with me . Just the open minded. I made friends , had people buy me a round of beers .I left two watches in the hotel in Nice and the staff shipped them overnight to my hotel in Montmartre. I saw a pickpocket in the train to Monaco and he stole a phone .I ate all kinds of cuisines including lunch at Le Consulat and gazing to the crowd. I’ll be back next year . Claudia . Austin Texas

You had me at sorbet framboise!! What can I say about la Bourse et la Vie - our very first trip, outside of North America, in 2007, staying in a tiny little apartment nearby on Rue Vivienne - jet-lagged after almost 24 hours of travel day from the west coast of Canada. Tired, anxious, excited, and hungry we wandered out to find something to eat at about 6PM and found this, looked good - ordered the seafood appetizer, and it arrived at the table with all the raw seafood offerings (first surprise of the evening) - hubby was a bit squeamish, and only tried a few, I thoroughly enjoyed the rest. I can't remember what else we had that night, probably French onion soup, a steak, and a fish dish, (had my first taste of Normandy butter, real butter like we used to make when I was a kid) but it was all good, including the $60 bottle of wine (second surprise of the evening) we unknowingly ordered. I could speak a bit of rudimentary French, but nothing satisfactory enough to truly understand what was being said. Hubby still talks about it today, not so much the wine (which was very good) but the cost of it. One of the most memorable meals I have ever had!! As well as the most expensive.

I was in Paris the last 6 weeks and I ate at a half dozen restaurants (including a couple recommended by Les Frenchies) when they brought the card machine to pay for the meal they ask "Do you want to put the tip on the card" I was a little shocked the first time it happened and added a tip. (I always left a few euro tip at meals because the waiters always accommodated my terrible French or simply ask me in English) Then it happened several more times. I have to admit that the restaurants were usually filled with non French (American and lots of Japanese for some reason). I just wondered if French speaking patrons at those restaurants would also be ask about leaving a tip?
@lydiacarels79122 ай бұрын
It's not manditory, but they can try? Especially since there is almost nó cash anymore. And yes, I speak French and they also ask me. But you're not obliged to do it. I find it more "friendly" than the 20% extra in the UK - which is legally nót manditory - for which they dón't ask permission!!
@LesFrenchiesTravel2 ай бұрын
They would get an earful from a Parisian. It's uncalled for and they take advantage of tourists that way. That would be a guaranteed no tip from me if they asked.
@damienvidal24202 ай бұрын
It's uncalled for if you pay by cash (as you'll probably leave the change instead of an American style tip) but rather common, even for a French speaker if you pay by card. It's not compulsory, they have a living wage but rounding up is considered good manners if the service was good. Instead of "base pay" like in the US, think of it as a small bonus, for good service. It used to be common because people used not to want to have a pound of coins in their pockets so they left the change, but with cards and no contact payment they might remind you that you can still round up if you're happy with the service. Basically, in France there is already a 12.5% service charge (usually). So adjust accordingly. If you think it was worth 15% or 20% because of the experience, you can add some to the bill.
@paulgerrard922719 күн бұрын
You american or canadian? They will often ask as they know its commonly "expected" by the customer. On the inverse when i am in america i dont psy staff wages and only offer a nominal tip. They dont like and i explain that i dont like the expectation i pay them not their employer

Great video Antoine and Colleen - informative and entertaining. One question, how do you ask for your steak to be cooked? Does it depend on the cut? When in France, I would always lean towards 'a point' as it will often be cooked (UK) medium-rare, maybe even rare. There seemed to be a range of 'doneness' with the steaks shown in the video

Do you order your steak frites at these places saignant or a point ? I like it in between, which is difficult to order in France.

Hello Antoine and Colleen! Do you know if any of these 5 restaurants fry their frites in beef fat? I'm coming to Paris in April with my cousin for 10 days, her first trip, my 4th!

Can you order your steak medium well in France?
@LesFrenchiesTravel2 ай бұрын
@sallyridenour5293 yes of course, we say "à point"

You can order whichever way you want - but be aware that meat is more tender and has more taste if you eat it rare or medium rare like the French do.

My pick is the last restaurant. The steak was thick and Rare. Marais Perfect...

Doesn’t Le Relais usually offer you a second helping? Certainly the ones in the UK and NYC do 😋

yes they do and we did take a second serving, sorry we didn't show that

Pas problème! I'm definitely going to try La Bourse when I'm over at Easter! 😋
