I'm a Brit who moved to Lyon from the UK 20 years ago. I love it. It's just the right size - has a great mix of big-city buzz and almost village-like squares. Fantastic transport system for getting around. I enjoyed the overhead panoramic shots but there's so much more to the city - a walking tour is a great way to see it and there's a "hop on, hop off' tourist bus that allows you to alight anywhere that catches your eye, then continue on your way on the next bus. Really, 48 hours isn't long enough! :)

For the traveller from Paris, and that city’s rather monochrome palette of grey to greyer (with splashes of very intermittent colour to relieve the gloom, for Paris knows that it’s a resolutely northern place, and its buildings reflect those often cloudy skies), the first thing that strikes you about Lyon, 250 miles to the south, are the warm colours. Someone described the city’s overall appearance as like a crate of peaches ripening in the sun and this captures it nicely, as the red roofs and sun-bleached, fading stone more than hint of Le Midi, a hop-skip-and-jump down the Rhone Valley (Vienne? Valence? Montelimar?) It’s no accident that Lyon is almost exactly on the same latitude as Milan and Venice, as there is more than a hint of the Italianate in the ochre walls. Lyon is a lovely open city, with significant elevation on one side - reminiscent of Grenoble - looking east over the rivers divided by Presque Ile, across the rest of town. The most charming bit is the oldest bit, as is always the case in most French (and other countries’) cities. I almost gave myself a double hernia trying to romp up Fourviere Hill, but the pain soon eased when I clocked the majestic views from atop. There are also significant Roman ruins up here that are more extensive than I’d expected; a couple of theatres and other sundry bits and bobs. Least said about the Basilica (a sort of Romanesque/Byzantine mess of a mash-up) itself, the better. The reason to be up here are the views. The best church in Lyon is the main cathedral just down the hill. The rest of the time is best spent just aimlessly wandering. The old working-class district of La Croix-Rousse, is a (slightly gentrified) throwback to Lyon’s industrial past; a kind of self-contained village within the city. Place Bellecour, the city’s main square is a big, pompous, unwieldy thing and resembles nothing so much as a military parade ground. You can imagine Napoleon rallying his troops here on his way back from exile, (even if he never did.) But minor quibbles aside, Lyon can easily cope with 3 days of your life. I still can’t quite decide if its ‘northern’ or ‘southern’, though; I have always personally marked the start of Le Midi on this side of France at Montelimar, but on a midsummer’s day in Lyon, with the cicadas’ electric buzzing filling the air: this could well be the ‘true’ south. But where oh, where, are the shutters?!
@annysavoye38725 ай бұрын

This is so sweet to see your discovery of Lyon ! I'm so used to live there that I'm forgetting how beautiful it is and how great it is to discover for the first time ! If you ever happen to come back, I recommend a walk in the parc de la Tête D'or and a stroll on the Boulevard des Belges : the park is huge and there is a free zoo inside (which is quite unqiue I think), and the Boulevard is full of incredible typical XIXth and XXth centuries gigantic houses. If you are not affraid of walking into stairs and straight slopes, I recommend the park du Rosaire coming up or down from Fourvière it offers a beautiful sight of the town and is full of flowers and trees. Going down from Fourvière you can also spend some time in the parc des Curiosités, one of the most beautiful sights of Lyon, it's near the Saint Just metro station and is truly breathtaking (its a sweet spot for a romantic picnic and there is a boulangerie right around the corner !" I recommend a walk along la Saone river, from Bellecour to Confluence, you'll cross all the history of Lyon, from old to new in architecture and sights. Following the river, you encounter péniche boats, and a beautiful sight on the hills. Arriving to the Confluence very modern district, you can walk to the museum (if you like natural sciences, it's an amazing museum) and go the the actual place called "la confluence", which is where the two rivers meet (very beautiful around sunset). All those places require a lot of walking, but it's the best way to discover Lyon. To finish, if you'd like to stay in Lyon, I recommend the 8eme arrondissemnt, also called Monplaisir (such a lovely name !), home to the Lumière brothers and birthplace of the cinema. The neighbourhood is very quiet and pleasant, with a central street full of nice shops, restaurants, bars and cafés, parks and the Lumière Museum and cinema (where you can see old moves everyday). And that's all ! I just love my town and love to share about it ! Cheers !

Lyon is my favorite city in France. Two restaurants to recommend, besides Cafe Comptoir Abel, would be Cafe Terroir, my favorite, and La Maison Marie. I always stay at Hotel de Celestins, a very small, 3-star hotel and close to the theatre, but roomy, clean, close to everything, and inexpensive. While your video was fun (and all of them are very informative), there's so much more to Lyon than just the food. You should plan at least 3 days (preferably 4) in the city and then more days for wine tours originating from Lyon for Cote du Rhone, Beaujolais, and Burgundy.

Hi, juste a little erratum at 12:00, it's not Croix Rousse but place des Terreaux (which is a the bottom of Croix Rousse but not in, it was an arsenal before). And if you want a real bouchon we basically never go at vieux Lyon for them as they are basically tourists traps (not the worst of them but still a little bit ^^). If you come back and another time try to go to "la meunière" in Lyon 1 (modernized bouchon) or "le garret" (not the look of a bouchon but the real food and quantity of one) close to the opera. Also take a guide to visit the "traboules". And if you want a global vue of Lyon and the surroudings, try to go to the mont Thou. It's a nice area for a bit of (soft) hiking.

I visited Lyon for the first time this past March. I was there to record a CD on the organ in St Bonaventure church, which I believe I see in the background in your opening outdoor meal scene! I stayed in a hotel three blocks from the church, so was in the heart of downtown restaurants and shopping. Unfortunately, I was so busy with my recording project that I didn't have time to explore Lyon as it deserves. But I loved being there: so much mellower than Paris, so user-friendly, and plenty of things of real interest. I definitely want to return! My schedule was so strange, what with my having to record in the middle of the night, compounded by jet lag, that I had trouble getting to restaurants during their normal opening hours. But there was one nearby, very old-school, that stayed more constantly open, so I ate there three times. I had some really interesting, original plates there, including a fish with a unique orange-creme sauce.

I was in Lyon only for one day. I really liked it. The funicular wasn't working, so I had to climb up to the cathedral and arena. Presqu'ile was very pretty. A bit like Paris. I could've skipped Croix-Rousse. It took a long time to get there and there wasn't much to see. Observation--there aren't many cafes in Lyon, at least compared to Paris. I feel like I saw a lot of restaurants, which makes sense for the gastronomic capital of France, but still, cafes are part of the culinary history of France. It was surprising. Another observation--you seem to really like Burgundy wine. Not for me! I savored Cotes du Rhone in Lyon as I do elsewhere. Bordeaux is up next for me. Can't wait to try some St. Emilion sur place! Bordeaux are my favorite wines.

Love this as Lyon is a wonderful, compact & walkable city but with a great metro & tram system which we have visited several times & with history going back to the Romans. The amphitheatre at Fourvière is beautiful & Fête des Lumières each December is utterly stunning. So many places to see 2 days is easily filled. As for food, my last meal with our Lyonaisse friends in December was very "traditionnel" with Salade de Cochonailles (museau, cervelas, pieds de veau, gras double, lentilles) followed by Tablier de Sapeur. Well, when in Rome......okay Roman France anyway. 😀😀 Please go back soon & show people more of a fantastic city. Forgot. We stay at Hotel Vaubecour which is No. #1 rated on TA for Lyon hotels but it's actually a 2* B&B so it's very reasonably priced. Family run & really, really good.

We used to go up to the Beaujolais for weekends and hop down to Lyon. I think it is the only city in France in which I have never had a disappointing meal. The people there take their food so seriously that a sub-par restaurateur has little chance of surviving. I should be pointed out that they are drawing upon major food producing areas nearby, e.g., the Alps, the Massif Central, the Rhône Valley, Beaujolais, Burgundy and Bresse (especially for poultry).

Don’t cancel! I was visiting Paris from the US and you couldn’t tell anything was even going on. The news makes everything 10 times worse than what it is. Not once did we feel unsafe!!!

In Madrid, they are converting a lot of their old mercados to have restaurants, tapas, groceries, etc. They are wonderful, whether I took friends to the more touristy ones or to the neighborhood ones, they are not to be missed.

Hi from Lyon! Well thank you for all the good things you’re telling about my city 🥰. Lyon is also known for its lights. Monuments, universities… are all light up wonderfully at night. I love m’y city and for sure 2 days isn’t enough 😄 Have a nice Sunday!! 😘 PS: don’t ask for a “bouillon” in Lyon… we don’t know what it is… -concerning a type of restaurant of course 😁-

Next visit to Lyon…Cafe des Jacobins, near Place Bellecour. Once again, you will never get a bad salad in France!

OK guys we went to Lyon in 2017, and it rained and rained for the 2 days there. We saw NOTHING that you showed and now I am driven to go back! Loved the Halles
