@@killer2600 To get the magnetic field du to a current flowing through a conductor we use right hand. But yes here in the video if we use left hand everything falls in place. I got a solution to it and have prepared a report on it. In the report I have tried my best to explain why this video could have been represented in another way so that the confusion of why using right hand rule doesn't work here and anyways how magically the use of left hand works (though weird). @@killer2600 Yeah, you are right but what I feel is animating the stator magnetic field instead of rotor magnetic field to explain the operating principle of an induction motor would be a lot more intuitive. And If I am right then there are some serious errors regarding the current magnitude at different rotor conductors relative to their position wrt the stator magnetic field.

It IS used mainly to prevent high inrush starting current, but I also didn't know about the RL phase angle tuning before this video. I haven't known why induction motors have only around half maximum torque at startup (which is still not that bad)

@@Bizzon666 Only Squirrel Cage Induction Motors have a Starting Torque of about 0,5x Nominal Torque to be more precise. If I am not mistaken: Slip Ring Induction Motors have about 1,5x Nominal Torque as Starting Torque.

basically what the video implied was that increasing the rotor reistance would increase the current, because of reducing the phase shift. however i think the phase shift occurs because the current is lower when there is a resistor. i always thought the point of this construction is to lower the starting current and save the rotor from overheating. it could also be helpfull to reduce the phase shift on the primary, because industrial electrical bills tax you heavy for non-resistive-behaving loads (power factor) and is also a good way to maintain high torque over a wider range of rpms, because you can deadshort the rings when the motor get up to rpm and get the same starting torque you had with resistors, but now without them and at much higher speed. if i was to build such a device i would make the reistors part of the rotor and engage/disengage contacts by moving small bearings sliding freely on the shaft but connected to the contacts (something like the concept of a throwout bearing of a clutch)

Very good video explaining this, We still have a lot of cranes using wound rotor motors but there days are getting fewer and fewer as we are now just using VFD's and less expensive squirrel cage motors.

However nowadays we can have good torque-speed profile with Squirrel Cage Induction Motor as well. Thanks to VVVFDs(Variable Voltage Variable Frequency Drives). High starting Torque, Low Starting Current with low starting frequency. Also helps in starting up a synchronous motor. This has made slip-ring motor application very rare. Also initial cost and maintainence of slip ring IM is costly too.

torque and current are proportional untill you saturate the iron core of either the rotoro or stator, so VVVFDs can't increase the starting torque, they can only save money on the electric bill and save the motor from overheating

@@two_number_nines No they can increase the starting Torque by reducing supplied frequency but at the same time reducing the supply voltage as well (to avoid saturation and maintain air gap flux constant). Thus with reduced voltage we have reduced speed but at the same time we have reduced supply frequency which provides great starting torque with low starting Current. In other words, we have great torque at reduced speed and that's what is required for most of the motor application like traction. However nowadays we can have Torque-speed independent as well with the help of vector speed control instead of VFD.

TORQUE IS PROPORTIONAL TO THE FORCE APPLIED ON THE ROTOR. THAT FORCE IS PROPORTIONAL TO THE MAGNETIC FLUX FLOWING TROUGH THE ROTOR. THE MAGNETIC FLUX TROUGH THE ROTOR IS PROPORTIONAL TO THE CURRENT FLOWING TROUGH THE ROTOR ALUMINUM. THE CURRENT FLOWING TROUGH THE ROTOR ALUMINUM IS PROPORTIONAL TO THE MAGNETIC FLUX AMPLITUDE SUPPLIED BY THE STATOR. THE MAGNETIC FLUX AMPLITUDE DEPENDS ON THE FREQUENCY AND SUPPLY VOLTAGE. IF A MOTOR IS DESIGNED FOR 50 HZ 220V GRID THEN IT PROBABLY WILL SATURATE THE IRON CORE OF THE ROTOR EVEN AT 190V 50HZ IF THE ROTOR IS LOCKED INTO POSITION. VARIABLE FREQUENCY DRIVE WILL JUST LIMIT THE CURRENT DURING STARTUP WHILE MAINTAINING THE MAXIMUM TORQUE THE IRON CORE CAN MAKE BEFORE SATURATING.

Shouting it won't really help your case. VFDs with motor feedback control are routinely used in industry, and particularly in vehicles, like every vehicle Tesla makes, to increase starting torque by reducing the phase difference without wasting power with slip rings and external resistance. The principle for increasing starting torque is the same as a slip ring motor, but the means used to achieve it are different, and much more efficient.

i will repeat again shortly. the torque of the motor is bottlenecked by the cross section surface area of the rotor iron core. there is no physical way to increase the flux of the magnetic field lines trough the rotor substantially in commercially practical ways

By increasing the starting resistance you can simulatneously increase starting torque and decrease stator inrush current. Saves a lot of cable. Past a certain point the increased resistance allows you to reduce torque again thereby giving a softer start and speed control if desired. Most manufacturers use the same housing for squirrel change and wound rotor machines. Cranes, grinding mills, metals crushers can all benefit from something that can deliver nearly 5 times continuous rated torque. Unlike VSD there are no harmonics and no transistor or switching losses.

The direction of F is wrong because the direction of current is wrong. The induced current will oppose the change in field (from the stator)

Hey @@levimays55 , I was confused the same way. The magnetic field shown isn't stator field instead it is rotor field. Now on using right hand rule and all we get the same direction of rotation and the rotor current as shown in the animation. But If was asked to animate then I would have animated the stator field intead of rotor field as that would be a lot more intuitive and easy to understand. This video describes an old application of Slip ring motors, there are four different squirrel cage induction motors nema deisgns to overcome the torque speed characteristic problems. The slip ring induction motors are a lot more interesting as genererators in wind applications (Doubly Fed Induction Generators). Nowadays, the high startup torque and reduce inrush current are adjusted using variable frequency drives.

In many of the mentioned tasks in this video, like lifts and loaded starts the Variable Frequency Drive with squirrelcage or permanent magnet motor took over for being simpler and more efficiënt. Also slipring motors can be controlled by electronics making them more powerfull and efficiënt. They convert the otherwise wasted rotor energy back to electricity instead of heat.

@@Chimichanga5666 The biggest advantage of Squirrel cage motors is that the barings are the only moving parts. Less to maintain and no commutator arcs or sliprings that can also arc when dirty. Motors with permanent magnets have more starting torque, those with wound rotors can also produce more starting torque and the regenerative braking, even when the energy gets dumped in resistors (very common) saves wear on mechanical brakes. Motor drives can be used on wound rotor motors and tesla cars drive permanent magnet motors. It all depends on the application and load.

In the early 1970s I worked in a movie sound lab in Vancouver, Canada. Our many playback machines, the projector, and the recorder, all transporting 35 mm picture film & 35 mm magnetic {audio} film, were synchronized {locked together} using 3-phase wound-rotor induction motors. Shortly after that time, cheaper & more flexible vari-speed-capable stepper motor technology came into use, and all those beautiful expensive wound-rotor motors went to the scrapyard. Today, of course, the movie business works with giant digital files. Analog images & audio recordings are ancient history, with a few very rare exceptions. But it was interesting to have worked with that 1930s interlock technology - it had its charms...
