I work in a factory that makes huge, high-power transformers and I can say that this is the most accurate explanation of how a transformer works that I have ever seen.

20 years ago I used to wind the coils for these beasts up to 1000mva at the time. Retired now. Agree with you on the explanation.

i’m in one of them as well up in wisconsin and all i do is Crimp Taps and LV Conductors to wires. I also do some work on the tanks. I see all of this though while i’m working and it’s honestly incredible to see what some of this stuff does. incredible!

I design leak sealing clamps for transformers all the time. They are typically made of aluminum and occasionally PVC or Nylon. Common leak locations are the drain valves at the bottom of the housing, the nozzles coming out of the housing to the cooling fins, and all parts in between. The fins are not all the same on transformers. Some are the big sheets like the one in the video, others are oval shaped tubes attached to a long round header at the top and bottom of the tubes. These tubes often get holes in them and/or at the point where they are welded to the header pipes. The clamps are small enough to fit in between the tubes and enclose them. Sometimes multiple tubes are enclosed in one clamp. I also do a ton of bushing clamps where they leak between the porcelain and steel. There are usually valves in the pipes between the main housing and the radiators, they often leak as well. The clamps for these typically enclose the entire valve. Some render the valve inoperable and others have stem extensions that stick outside the clamp so the valve can remain operable. Then there are all manner of hub clamps that just push up against the side of the housing where a leak may have resulted from corrosion or a defect in the metal. We even occasionally do manual tap switch enclosures. All of the clamps are pumped with sealant after they are installed. I am not involved with the manufacture or installation of these clamps, only the design. My clients are maintenance contractors for the electrical companies. I do design work for installations all over the U.S. and in Canada. Electrical work is a small part of the design work I do. The bulk of the leak sealing work I do is for chemical plants, refineries, power plants, paper mills, food processing facilities, municipal water systems, and large building piping systems.

Your animations are top-notch! Really very good, they must take some time create. Also, your explanation of the basic principals of electromagnetic induction and flux is one of the clearest and most understandable conceptually in combination with the associated animations. I enjoyed this video. I did not realize that 20 minutes had gone by watching it.
