Just perfect. It only happened for the two até wonderful singers, one comes from the opera and the other comes from the musicals. What a duett. Simply beautiful.

I admire Elaine for her tenacity to perform in a front a big audience. To sing in a operactic way with a duet alongside Lesley Garret xxx

Should be called Balls of Steel instead of Bacarolle.The fact that Elaine Paige did such an amazing job speaks volumes! Not every one can be an opera diva. This was TV entertainment & (hopefully) mass enlightenment to the beauty of opera. This wasn't a production of some Royal Opera Company. So, let's take this at face value. At that, it was incredibly beautiful and well done! Bravo Girls, Bravo! Both amazinly talented in their own right.

These individually accomplished songbirds are bravely straddling the chasm between pop and opera. If you criticize the effort that's your right, but those below who mislabel opinion that differs from their own as "spam" only mark themselves as trolls. IMHO this show was a well fated use of TV to combine two singing talents from different theater worlds. Vive la difference!

So Elaine was starring in "The King And I" in 2000. I think Lesley would be perfect to do that next year!

For Lesley to play Anna was so obvious that I don't understand why it never happened. Still, it might yet!

I think she was quite good it must be hard for her singing in a different style. My hat goes off to her.

Charlie Charlie, in "Piaf" Paige sang every single chanson in English, except for the finale, "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien," so there is no reason playing Edith should have greatly improved her French.

Both beautiful singers, but not a good combination for this song.

Well it’s blindingly obvious who is the opera singer. EP should stick to musicals 🤣
@G6JPG2 жыл бұрын
And, with respect, opera singers to opera; they spoil the non-opera songs when they sing them in operatic style - IMO, anyway. This one - Barcarolle - can I think be sung in either style, but I don't think the two styles _mix_ too well in it.
@Pinkyplums2 жыл бұрын
G6JPG I agree re: opera singers sticking to opera. However to confirm the Barcarolle is operatic, from the opera Tales of Hoffman
@G6JPG2 жыл бұрын
@@Pinkyplums Agreed. Howver, I think the melody is sufficiently well-known that it has "escaped" from the limited opera world, so can be sung by singers of other genres: I think (however much strict classical-music lovers dislike that!) there might even have been other words put to it. For example, I have it in German by Mimi - kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYqrh56jiLenjpo - although that's a fairly classical presentation, with orchestra etc., but she's not an opera singer (though a very good [and extremely popular] singer). I'm still making my mind up whether _mixing_ the genres - as here with Elaine and Lsley - "works"; at first I thought it didn't, but listening again while typing this, I'm finding it quite pleasant. In some ways, I think it's a pity someone told Kiri (quite correctly!) that she could do opera; I have a CD of her from _before_ that happened (she used to sing in nightclubs or similar), and I actually prefer that Kiri. But then the opera-lovers would have been deprived of something that is definitely special! But I _don't_ like her rendering of for example Danny Boy, or the song whose second line isn't "weigh a pie".
