The Chick-a-dee Call / Song
Where Chickadees got their name. Males and females use it, which can be heard all throughout the year, especially in fall and winter. There are 4 main uses, to alert to the presence of predators, to keep in contact or locate one another, to communicate about a food source, and for coordinating group movement.
Tseet Call
If you want to locate these darling birds, this is the one important call to take note of. Made Year-round by both sexes, this sound is used almost constantly. Used mainly as a way to signal the caller’s location to other members of a flock who are very nearby, also used in encounters with individuals they don’t know.
High zee Alarm
Used when they see a Raptor quickly flying by in high pursuit or is in attack mode. A really high-pitched call that can vary depending on the type of predator detected, and how dangerous the threat could be. When this call is given which is mostly by males all the other chickadees immediately stop everything they are doing and remain motionless until they hear a chickadee call letting them know all is clear. Even other species of birds understand this cal.
Fee Bee Song
It is mainly produced by males and can be heard throughout the year but more so in late winter and especially during Spring. Often the Fee bee song is referred to as the “hey sweetie” which fits perfectly since one of the reasons males sing it is to charm a female, also described as sounding like cheeseburger. Used to signal aggression to other males, defend a territory, and attract and arouse females.
The Gargle Song / Call
This call is an aggressive, vocalization that lasts just half a second in total. it is complex and varies a lot. They are given by males and are associated with dominance establishment and territory defense.
The gargle vocalization is easily heard from the middle of winter into Spring and again in Fall. Gargles can also be given in a sexual context, sometimes during a male's dawn chorus performance; these Gargles are not associated with aggression but are often associated with copulation.
Broken dee Call
The broken dee can only be heard during the breeding season. It sounds similar to a baby chickadee, however, it is much different and if you hear it then you know you have yourself a female since it is only females who make it. They begin using it once the nest cavity has been completed and through early incubation.
If the male is nearby, the calls are often accompanied by Wing Quivering and usually elicit feeding by the male.
Faint Feebee Call
This call is very much like the Feebee song but is always much lower in amplitude. This call is given by both males and females during the breeding season, and usually near the nest. Often when the male arrives at the nest with food he uses this faint feebee to let his mate know he is there. The female also uses it when inside the nest to alert her nestlings to feeding time. As babies near fledging, it is used again by the male, as a way to encourage the young to leave the nest.
Hiss Alarm
This call is only heard inside the nest or other enclosed small spaces and is used typically by an incubating female when she is startled especially by an intruder trying to get inside. This is widespread among the Paridaefamily and has been given the name, Snake display. Chickadees do this in order to hopefully scare any intruders away.
Squawk Call
Another call only heard in the nest is associated with parental Provisioning by either sex. The purpose is to stimulate the nestings to open their mouths for feeding.
Begging Dee Call
Only heard during late spring and throughout summer this call is made by the adorable fledglings to obtain food from their parents as well as to let their parents know where they are. Honestly, unless they are napping there is rarely a moment when they aren't making this begging call.

If you have a sick or injured bird in your possession I can not help this bird in any way it is strongly advised to contact a local vet or wildlife official before any decisions are made. It is very easy to do more harm than good when handling any wildlife.

Definitely my favorite year-around yard bird. Such great personalities and comical nature, Ive had more close interactions with these birds than any other. No matter if its while sitting in a tree stand or even hunting off the ground, they are so inquisitive and trusting when you are sitting still. Ive had them land on my arrow shaft, my bow limbs, my knee, my gun barrel, my boot and my hands, and once even on the bill of my hat. It bent right over and looked me in the eye, inches away, and I think it laughed at me. I treasure that memory as one of my alltime top 3 Things That Happened While In The Woods list. Great vid Lesley, thanks again..

Some of my observations: if they are saying hi to you, possibly when you are hand feeding, they will tend to make the more high pitched tseet sound. Maybe they think of you as friend or possibly part of the flock? The other things is, they will make a single flat dee sound if they are either impatient or annoyed at something. It can also be used as a greeting, but more of a "hurry up and refill the feeder" type of greeting. Anybody else notice these sounds or have other observations to share?

LOVE THEM! Well, we get both here in MD but mostly Carolina chickadees where I am in Southern MD. They are so similar it doesn’t make much difference to me which, love them both. Two pairs nested in 2 of my nest boxes (interesting story on how and what boxes they chose) and one set fledged last weekend. The other is prob gonna be ready in another 3-5 days. So glad they both made it. My blue birds lost 4 babies to hypothermia on Mother’s Day due to 48 hours of nonstop rain and a severe drop in temp despite my best efforts. I cried all day. They are trying again tho, started laying yesterday morning. Thank you for your wonderful videos. 🥰

I find it really sonorous, and it always reminds me of sunny, spring days.

I once chickadee frozen for 15 minutes with a seed in its mouth on our Sandcherry, because of a Raptor threat. It was incredible. They are so tiny and still, in those moments of threat, that even on a leafless tree or shrub, you wouldn't see them unless you look for them.

I was always super attracted to these bird calls and took me a lifetime to figure out which birds were making that to note song. Through my childhood, I called them philosopher birds, because in those two notes there seem to be so much being said. I am now 50 years old And know what those are called I am even getting a Tattoo with one of these birds on it. I like bird calls, but haven’t been so attracted to the sound of a bird as this one. I bought a plush toy that has the two note sound. It makes an actual recording if you squeeze it. I am obsessed with these birds. And they will always be philosopher birds to me ha ha ha. I didn’t know those other calls Chicka DDDD was also the same bird so that is pretty cool too. I absolutely loved this video saved. Thanks for all the info.

I love chickadees! They are sometimes the bravest! Certainly entertaining! My favorite sounds are the chick-a-dee-dee & fee bee. My mother's favorite bird as well. She adored them. Her name was Phoebe!!! 😊

That's so sweet about your mom being named, Phoebe and her favorite bird being chickadees, which sing a phoebe song. Love that 🥰

The Fee-bee is a better sign of spring than the first robins. We all know the robins are going to get snowed on.

I’ve been hearing the faint fee-bee in my yard. It’s actually quite loud. I’ve been wondering which bird was making it, because we have many species. This is wonderful to know it’s the chickadee, one of my two favourite birds!

Chickadees are so darn charming! I wish they were in my area. Right now I have a scrub jay fledgling squawking outside my front door. Not nearly as melodic. Great video, Lesley! 💗🐦

I love the feint fee bee! Lesley, this is beautiful video showing the Chickadee so close up we can see the individual tiny fluffy feathers and their eyes. Also I'm amazed at how detailed the analysis is of each call is.. The who, what, when, how and why each call is made! Fascinating and so pleasing. Thankyou!

🥰🐦thank you. I feel so worried when I hear the predatory alarm but it is good to know they have a way of communicating to others that danger is near. Such incredible birds. ❤

@@LesleytheBirdNerd I agree! Alarm calls always worry me!! One day there was a cute female American Goldfinch sitting on my feeder. I didn’t notice it at first, and as I got closer to take the feeder down and fill it, I noticed that she was just frozen, sitting there, and didn’t fly away, I also noticed there were no other bird sounds happening (which is unusual). I stepped back to give her space, looked up, and there was a hawk eyeing her! When I moved, it startled the hawk and it flew away. She waited a good five minutes before she finally flew away too! It could’ve gone very differently for her had I not appeared at that exact moment!

Too much cuteness in one video! I think for a favorite I would have to pick the standard Chicka dee dee dee! Just the idea that the added Dees are a way to be really emphatic with the BE ON THE ALERT significance. That's adorablle. Did anyone else notice the Faint Fee Bee sounds like people did when they called out "yoo hoo!" to other people to get their attention?? Did humans pick this up from the birds?
