That's because the man singing it, Stolas, is a terribly heartbroken person. He began a relationship with someone for selfish reasons, but over time realized he truly loved them, even if they didn't necessarily reciprocate. This is him lamenting that unrequited love.

I'll be honest, I'm not sure what you did with this one was a wise decision. The backing melodies feel too upbeat, and it doesn't harmonize with the overall mournful tone of the original song. Perhaps consider redoing this one, and instead of overlaying backing synth, simply use what already exists as a guide. Long, low and soft, complementing and mimicking the original melody. I hope you take this advice in the spirit in which it's given. I've listened to the original countless times, and while I'm no expert in musical theory, I like to think I have some elemental feeling of what sounds complement, contrast, and oppose one another.
