This Film on Lesotho introduces the viewer to the Mountain kingdom of Lesotho. I explored and travelled the southern part of Lesotho to capture with photos and do some fly fishing to test the waters of Lesotho. Lesotho must be the heartbeat of Southern Africa. This film is about my exploration of the southern side of Lesotho with cameras. It introduces the viewer to the uniqueness of Lesotho's people, history, culture and landscapes despite being landlocked by South Africa.

Lesotho is next to qwaqwa in South Africa we share the same heritage about 47% of qwaqwa is also surrounded by the same ⛰ mountains we share , it reminds me of how qwaqwa used to look like around 97' before RDP houses, good roads and Malls etc...thanks for sharing👊

Before the Dutch invaded Basotho Land in now present day “Free State”, Basotho used to run nationwide commercial farming and traded maize with the Cape Colony and neighboring Nguni tribes. Moshoeshoe had enough food that could sustain Basotho people for atleast 8-10years. When the Boers took the Fertile Basotho Land that was a source of trade for them it was a hard pill to swallow. That is why the wars between Basotho and Voortrekkers lasted for over half a century. Let’s hope a consensus will be reached between the Boers and Basotho. With a history of conflict and hatred hopefully they find one another and share the land successfully.

@@joelategan Perhaps you should’ve done more research before commenting. You should stop watching KZbin videos and go to libraries and read real documented history. If you are based in Cape Town go to the library in UCT and go to the Southern African history isle and do some digging. The earliest evidence of Basotho in Basotho Land has been recorded to be in the 5th century through the San rock art. That’s the first time paintings of a people with shields and iron weaponry&agricultural tools and livestock were recorded. That was the arrival of Basotho in the mountains of Basotho territory. So to answer your question, before Lifaqane there were Basotho Chiefdoms all over modern day Lesotho, Free State and Gauteng. There were never Basotho in the East of the Drakensberg. It is only Nguni tribes who occupied coastal territories. Sotho-Tswana people were concentrated in the center of South Africa integrated with the Sans. The people who ran away from KZN into Lesotho were other Nguni Tribes who knew of another great kingdom in the mountains. So they fled KZN and seek protection against Shaka Zulu from King Moshoeshoe in the Mountains. They were accepted into the kingdom. It wasn’t a peaceful process though. When they fled they came in war trying to occupy new territory but Moshoeshoe’s army defeated them together with othe regiments of King Shaka and integrated them into his Kingdom by giving them homes and livestock to start a new life. That’s how the kingdom expanded in a short span of time by accepting many Nguni refugees.

@@joelategan If you didn’t know let me educate you a bit. The first Europeans to settle Basotho territory before the Afrikaners set foot in the Free State were French Missionaries spreading Christianity. They were stationed in Lesotho in 1833. Luckily they got there before the Boers did and therefore they documented all history thereafter between Basotho and the Boers without Bias. They wrote everything as they were witnessing it rolling out. And it was later translated from French to English in the early 1900s. The French brought education, maize and many other foreign concepts to the Basotho people. The Basotho were the first South Africans to receive formal education and that is why they could negotiate their independence in the late 1800s whilst the whole of South Africa was colonized. It is the French settlers who advised them on how to prevent Western Imperialism. By the late 1830s Basotho under King Moshoeshoe had miles and miles of maize farms all over the Free State. In fact when the first set of Afrikaners were arriving in Free State they were fed by Basotho. They traded weapons and other goods for food from Basotho. It is not until after a few years that more and more Afrikaners were flooding into the area and then they planned to take over the land. And they actually suffered defeat at the hands of Basotho warriors countless times until they were finally successful. Before the Afrikaners came to the Free State it is the Koranas(Griquas) who came to invade the Free State first as they were losing their land to the Afrikaners who were moving from the Cape and closer and closer to Basotho territories. So by the time the Afrikaners arrived Basotho already had guns and horses that they acquired from the battles won against thousands of Korannas who were fleeing the Afrikaner Voortrekkers. And Basotho already had other guns, horses and donkeys that they had acquired from trade in the Cape Colony. If you want to learn about Basothos commercial farming across Southern Africa you should read Encyclopedia Britannica Vol.11. The British have documented who was trading food to them in the Cape Colony.

@@joelategan That’s the point. Basothos maize farms were in modern day Free State where you seeing the maize farming thrive now. Have you ever been to Lesotho? It’s literally on the Drakensberg Mountains. How can you start commercial farming on the Drakensberg? Lesotho is majority Rocky Mountains. The land is not really arable although there is small scale farming but it’s difficult to sustain. The fertile land they had they lost to the Boers. The only really fertile land in Lesotho where people can even grow fruits is the small portion that borders the Free State in the North of Lesotho. Btw when I refer to Basotho territory I’m mainly referring to the Free State. Lesotho became a nation because of the push back the Basotho suffered in the hands of the Boers. As they began losing more and more territory they sought refuge in the mountains and from there they were much more difficult to conquer. As you know such landscapes is where great empires fall. Look at Afghanistan it couldn’t be conquered. Ethiopia as well is very mountainous and so never got colonized because it was easy for them to defend themselves against foreign invaders. Switzerland cant be conquered as well for that very same reason. Apparently the Nazi couldn’t invade Switzerland because they knew the country is impenetrable due to its landscapes. And thanks for acknowledging their prowess in mountain warfare. Alotta people don’t realise that that is the reason Shakas kingdom couldn’t expand Westwards beyond the Drakensberg. They could only expand Southwards and to the North because they couldn’t penetrate Moshoeshoe’s army thanks to the landscape that they mastered.

thank you Lerato. I really dont know as I recorder it around 15 years ago. It was one of the Malealea bands that entertained at the lodge every evening. I have recently enquired as to wether they still existed and wanted to make contact with them again and Malealea management that got them to perform for tourists at the lodge stated that they would be different persons but I think they will start performing again after covid restrictions. Please share as we want the tourists to start traveling there to support the local tourism industry as well as the people that live off tourism revenues. All the best

Chief is so adorable. Lesotho male elders like chief are called ntate, not baba. You leave baba at the border on the South African side. 🤣🤣. Everybody here is so adorable. Former Transkei where I was brought up was very much like this. Unfortunately, subsistence farming is in decline because of government grants. Sad actually. This is a healthy lifestyle. It might look like poverty but these people eat fresh food straight from the land.

Thanks for watching Lefu. Your observations are spot on. Its a good question. I actually went to Lesotho a couple of times to make a TV program for mnet and the Lesotho Highlands commission I think in 2007 and 2008. Then things took another turn and I protected the footage until now when I have time to build up my KZbin channel and started editing recently. I took a year traveling and filming not that I have stopped since. I wanted to go back with my drones and fresh 4k footage but basically forgot about it. I decided two months to roll it out rather and return to Lesotho to do a follow up film so I want to get in touch with someone in Tourism or the likes to set me up with the schedule. Please share it . I really would like South Africans to travel to Lesotho rather neighboring countries or traveling overseas. Blessings

It wasn't carried out by the colonialists - the Berlin conference/partition of Africa.
