Lorraine is the author of The Curly Girl handbook and she streamed a live video on The Hair Addict group to discuss everything related to the CG method and why your locks will find salvation if you ditch these heat stylers and products loaded with chemicals and become a true curly girl, it's worth noting that it works for all hair textures and patterns despite its name.

I felt like I had a one on one with THE CURLY QUEEN!. Even through a screen her kindness, care and warmth could be felt so vividly. She just absolutely loves hair and she's so passionate about it. Not just hers she cares for all of our hair too. I loved the questions that we asked to her and I literally sat with a notebook make so many notes. Im super excited to hit a reset on my journey and just follow through with her tips. Lorraine thank you thank you so much for inspiring millions of curly girls across the globe. Much love to you from me and my hair.

She is so right. I have always had curly hair from birth, but over time it began to look straight. I blow-fried it through most of my teen years, then began just pulling it back. I would joke that my only hairstyle was a pony-tail. I bought her book and found a good botanical conditioner, the more I soaked my hair in conditioner, the curlier it became. My husband grew up in the back of a beauty/barber shop and even commented how shiny, healthy and good my hair has been looking. Thank you for your book Lorraine!

Testing LIGHTWEIGHT Conditioners: make sure hands are CLEAN, (Bring OIL- FREE Wipes) put a small dollop about the size of a pea on the back of the hand and massage it in for 10 to 15 seconds, if it disappears without a sticky, greasy or oily residue but only a moist smooth feel it should work great. The fewer the ingredients the better. If your hair needs moisture: Use a CLEAN Shampoo (Like PRELL®) and follow up with a deep conditioner to which you have added 1/2 oz Cold Pressed Wheat Germ Oil (and if you want a strength boost a multi vitamin capsule) mix well and apply to damp hair and cover with a plastic cap apply a heat cap for 20 min. or without heat for 30 min. IMPORTANT: Add small amounts of warm water and emulsify well before rinsing, if hair feels oily, shampoo LIGHTLY with a sulfate - free moisturizng shampoo. Eating Eggs (IF your diet allows) and taking wheat germ oil and eating mixed nuts at least three times a week will help hair to grow at its maximum speed and thickness.

You shouldnt eat too much nuts (or plant oils and all things like that), because most of them (with some exceptions like macadamia) have tons of omega 6, which are incredibly inflaming, because it's very hard to balance it out with enough omega 3 in modern diet. And everybody needs a solid omega 3 supplementation if you want to be healthy and thus have good hair.

Hi Lorraine, I'm 55 and have had "soft thin curly brown locks" since I could remember. I tried to go "curly" years ago but couldn't stop blow-frying! Now I'm compromised with range of motion due to severe arthritis and the infusion treatment is a form of chemo.. because of concerns with thinning hair and frizz, I am starting to love my curls! I use No Poo and a light conditioner, and the Ultra gel from Devacurl.. I have an appt with a specialist on your list of salons who knows me well.. I'm sure she get my hair growing in the right direction and to it's fullest potential1 Thanks for all you do and who you are! If it wasn't for you I'd still b struggling!

I know she said no oils but to the person with the bald patch, I have used Vatica on my hair every week for a while and it rapid-grew from shoulder-length to the back-bone now. No joke. I know it sounds crazy cuz I didn’t believe it would work, I just tried it with low expectations, and it bloody stunned me! So I would definitely try it on the patches if I had bold patches. Mind you, I am still shampooing and about to transition, that is why I have the experience that the oil would come out because of the shampoo. But still.... rather than having a bald patch I’d probably oil that area and see if it works then shampoo only that area with a sulphate free shampoo and then do the Curly Girl Method after... That being said, use your own judgements...

Hi Lorraine...I love all your tips/advice. While I agree that we need good products along with good nutrition on the inside I do not think everyone should run out and take prenatal vitamins with folic acid...not all of us can take folic acid and need folate or follinic acid for proper assimilation. Folic acid for me with poor methylation is horrible for me and can actually make me feel worse. If you want to take supplements do it wisely.

To grow your hair longer you should give it a trim once a month. When I say trim I mean just Nip the ends. Having clean ends keeps the hair healthy allowing it to grow instead of splitting.

I know I’m way late to the game, but I have a question L.Massey. In your curly girl video the 23 minute long version, you have a before and after at the end. The very first models before appears to be fractual zigzag type curls but her after curls were very loose wavy in style…. How did she achieve that loose wavy look? I’m a curly girl in recovery and I have here same hair texture. I would love to see if my hair can achieve that loose wavy curl look. Can you do a video of models before and after while also showing how they achieved that after look? I don’t think I’m the only one that would love to see the transformation process in action. Thanks I’m advance. I hope you see this and reply back.

What about menopause - hair- thin , receding, doesn't grow?
@latinainwpb
@latinainwpb 6 жыл бұрын
Marilyn McLaughlin The loss of progesterone after menopause can cause hair thinning, also diminishing thyroid function, which is actually affected by low progesterone. Although I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism around the time my periods stopped, I've kept most of my hair probably in part due to using a progesterone cream regularly. I've also taken supplements containing silica and vitamins whenever I've noticed some thinning, usually after a period of stress. Regular scalp massage with castor oil mixed with essential oil of rosemary will stimulate hair growth. I've recently restarted this because I went through a fairly long period of stress and my long hair suffered all over, got dry, "tangly" and thinner. I firmly believe hair is not really "dead", as long as it's attached to our scalp it reacts to whatever's going on with us. It's not just about bio-chemistry, vibrations count as well, the atoms in our whole body are constantly vibrating.

I really value your wisdom here, you're spot on! What particularly resonates with me is your conversation about protein. Did I miss a discussion about using a diffuser hair dryer? I assume you're opinion might be to avoid but what of quick-ready work days etc requiring a quick dry? As we avoid shampoo will our hair air dry faster or slower? Is it better to have that happen for the hair to air dry faster or slower & why? I have thick curly hair that gets greasy with oils and too much conditioner. It seems like if some ofy hairs are happy and curly and moisturized then the others are frizzy. I have lots of health problems and have had brain surgery requiring head shaving and restarting (was liberating and fun hair wise and I enjoyed my curls every stage of regrowth all the more!). Tips for getting an even balance of no frizz for thick hair on days when I don't fight my curls with a straight iron or just give up and throw them in a bun? Thank you so much ❣️❣️❣️

I’ve been doing this for a good 10 years. Although I’ve been loyal to the cut and process, I generally can’t replicate what my stylist does. I’m truly struggling now as my temples and outer layer on top is nearly gray (I’m horrified). I cannot get these parts under control no matter what! I do section by section with OneC and BLeave In (and gel), but that top is heavy, going straight, and GRAY. The rest of my head has amazing chunky double-helix coils. But that FRONT! It’s killing me and I always end up with it in a pony hair. MADDENING!

I'm just starting the curly girl journey. Not sure about how to cut it, tho. I've decided to let it grow and have it cut one length, but it looks bad when the curl falls out or I sleep on it. Today I just wet it down a bit to let it curl back up. It's not as curly as yours. Thanks for the great video. I'm going to get your book so I'll have the information at hand.

Check out Curly Suzie here on YT. She has Lots of good info and "hacks" for your CG journey. Welcome to the club! One thing about sleeping on your hair, invest in one or two satin pillow cases, they're super cheap on Amazon. I think I got two for 6 or 7 bucks. My hair is super short so I can't pineapple it (and I don't think I'll ever let it get past my collarbone again) and while it helps with breakage, I still look a hot mess in the morning. So you'll also want to invest in a good quality water spritzer. My tap water sours in a matter of hours (or less) so I only use filtered water. Depending on your water quality, if you can't filter it, get a small spritzer and dump it after every use, even pump the sprayer until it's dry. There are lots of videos here on YT showing hair styles for curly girls, you just have to watch for ones that match your curl pattern. When you see one you like pause the video and take a picture to show to your stylist. That's what I did. They can help you by only trimming a tiny little bit here and a tiny little bit there to start training your hair into the shape you're wanting. Plus, like Lorraine said, it oxygenates the hair so more nutrients can get in. Just remember to tell them: No thinning shears. You're paying them for a service so they have to do what you ask them. Send them to NaturallyCurly.com if they need some education. 😉 Whew! That was long winded! LOL! Best of luck to you! To us both, eh? 😄

beautifuldisaster 710 - I was diagnosed with Lupus over 20 years ago & have a high ANA Titer. I ran a fever for twenty + years until I realized I was poisoning myself with just about everything. A silica supplement helped regrow my hair. I have new growth that actually sticks out & resembles a hair halo! Lol! I use Jarrosil drops in a tablespoon of MCT Oil because I have a family history of ALZ. www.medicalmedium.com/blog/benefits-of-silica Also, an organic (chemical free) plant based diet changed so many things for me. I cut out processed everything! Basically, I went natural because this helps me control my Lupus flare ups. I have not had hair loss since I added supplements & made diet changes AND my thyroid tests are normal. I didn't really notice a change in the texture of my hair until age 51 & menopause. I now have some gray but my hair is becoming very curly, frizzy & wiry. After a lot of trial & effort, the only thing that's helping is avoiding hair products with parabens, sulfates & silicones. I saturate my DRY hair with rice water (organic rice & distilled water) and then use a cleansing conditioner. I add 3/4 t of warmed Organic Coconut Oil to a silicone free conditioner, apply it to my scalp & rinse with warm water but end with cool water. It has never been oily. I also add a tiny bit of natural plant/nut oils (Coconut, Olive, Jojoba, etc) that penetrate the hair shaft to smooth fly-aways & combat frizz since frizz-free products contain silicones that end up drying out the hair and I want MOISTURE. Good Luck!

Lorraine, where were you when I was a kid!? I grew up in the 80s in the East Midlands and no one at school or the hairdresser’s told me about the Curly Girl Method. My mother told me to brush my hair and then chopped it all off when I refused 😬 when I read about your book I presumed you were American as this method appears to have traction in the States. Imagine my surprise when I heard your accent! Did you promote the Curly Girl Method and DevaCurl in the UK? I have never seen your products on sale here.

Hiya Lorraine! Since i have been following your curly girl method, my hair has looked amazing. ..... Sadly, i have lost my husband to cancer, at the beginning of february 2019 and about three weeks ago, my hair started falling out! I am devastated, but i have read, that it will grow back. My question is .... as curly hair takes so long to grow, how is it ever going to look it's best again, without me having to wait years. Kind Regards.

First of all-many HUGS, I'm so sorry for your loss. Now is the time to take care of You. Maybe look into taking those pre-natal vitamins she was talking about? At the very least some biotin might help. Also, if you haven't already, some grief counseling should help with the stress. Rub some lavender oil on pulse points or add it to your spritz water or leave in conditioner. It's an all round healer. Best of luck to you and here's some more HUGS. 💙💙💙💙💙💙💙

@@longyarn4288 Greetings from The UK! Thank you you so much for your kind replay and i apologise for taking so long to respond, as i had to take some time out. It has now been three years since i lost my Tony and although the pain will never go away, i have slowly been able to move forward. My hair, is also growing back nicely and i shall be continuing to wear hair pieces until it is back to normal. I reckon, another 4 years should do it. That's the thing with curly hair, it takes three times as long to grow back to my required length, due to spiraling up. ... I wish you well and once again, thankyou! xxxx

sooooo I have been watching this video. and something you said struck me... you said hair is like feathers and like wool. and the oils stained your wool shirt. It got me thinking, that wool normally is water resistant, but chemical treatments made it otherwise. the wool doesn't like to be without there natural protective anti water layer. so it will absorb any oils or water. feathers are naturally waterproof, ( look at birds that are washed after they are covered in oil ) they need weeks to get back there natural oils to protect there feathers again. water isn't moisten anything. even on our skin water can be 100 drying. causing a lot of problems. I think if we want to take care of our hair and skin we have to get back our water repellent structure. if u think about all the minerals building up on our hair because of the massive amount we use to get back our curls. even when we walk outside and it rains it completely ruins our hair. because it go's into the hair. this is all just a mind boggle and I have been looking on different studies. and human hair is waterproof normally. but ! with whatever we do we make it is not longer. I believe we have to protect our hair against water. and soap ;) maybe we can use lanoline ( that comes from wool! ) to make our hair waterproof again. again it's just a mind boggle. and I hope u guys share your thoughts about this.

Jolanda Nvt 🖤 Interesting thoughts! I’m only reading this 5 months later - have you found anything more in your research?
@ocandro
@ocandro 5 жыл бұрын
This is nothing new, lanolin has been used in haircare for a very long time and while it creates an illusion of smooth hair, it doesn't repair it and can build up, especially when in large quantities and if you don't use super harsh detergents (and that wouldn't make sense of course). Low porosity hair repels water, which makes it extremely dry and brittle, it's also the type that has weakest curl definition. The only way to have healthy hair is to grow new hair we are going to treat well - protect from damage (hard water, mechanical, heat, chemical) nourish with good quality (no, not Shea Moisture etc) products that suit our specific hair type (how fine/coarse and porous it is etc) and protect and moisturize the damaged hair we already have, to look presentable during the process (protein treatments, bond treatments, emollient products to protect from mechanical damage). Healthy hair should be as close to medium porosity as possible for you and it actually means that your hair takes in enough (not too little/much) water and keeps it inside.

My hair hasn’t grown in years nor have I colored it in years or used heat. I still use a brush and a Shea moisture shampoo on my hair. Could it be still breaking from the previous damage of color and heat?
@ocandro
@ocandro 5 жыл бұрын
First of all it could be health problems - anemia, other deficiencies (zinc, vitamin Bs etc), being malnourished from fast food or vegan diet, hyper or hypothyroidism, autoimmune diseases, anything wrong with hormones. You need to check it up, because products won't save your health. As for doing something wrong, it would be best if you did a test, take a hair strand, perfectly use a totally clean hair left from shampooing. Pull this strand and see whether it stretches and breaks or doesn't stretch and breaks. If it's the first, your hair doesn't have enough protein, you can do a protein treatment or start using protein heavy (first few ingredients) products, especially conditioners and stylers (stylers are on your hair for the longest time, they need to be nourishing!). If it's the latter, your hair needs more water, but it's important to know your porosity to find out how to moisturize it. If your hair doesn't break easily, it has to be broken mechanically - maybe brushing, tight buns and ponytails, manipulating wet hair too much etc.

You and your hair are very beautiful. Thank you so much for the information about curly hair. My curls have been misunderstood my whole life as well as my self. Anyway, this is my third month with no hair-color. However, I got a hair cut to try to cut out the color and it is so unmanageable! I began blow-drying but I really dislike all the hair pulling. I must admit that the person who cut my hair did not listen to me and did a very bad job. I was having some spacing at the crown so she cut it short and left me with a square head. I got another hair cut shorter but now cannot manage and every day is a bad hair day for me. Most Importantly, I am very sensitive to chemicals so I am limited on products. Also, beginning this year I began to notice this constant crawling feeling on my scalp. It alternates with burning and itching, so I am finally going to see my Dr. tomorrow hoping to get an answer. Looking forward to reading your new silver hair book. Thank you 🙏🏻 I would appreciate any suggestions you may have.

Question: I color my hair. How would improving the hydration of my hair effect the length between touch ups for my color treated hair? I’m already struggling to get four weeks without all the grays coming in.
@annettemint
@annettemint 6 жыл бұрын
I'm going to try and answer this because I see no one has responded. : ) Coloring your hair changes the porosity thus making it harder to stay moisturized aka hydrated. By keeping your hair moisture you should be able to retain length.

I henna my hair so my gray doesn't seem to show as harsh as it's growing out. There's also some stuff called, um, Olaplex 3, I think. There's an article on NaturallyCurly.com about it. It's supposed to really help chemically dyed hair. It won't keep the gray from coming back, or popping up sooner, but it is supposed to help strengthen the hair after coloring. Best of luck to you!

why won't she do anything about this DevaCurl controversy? Her once beloved brand is set to go down the drain. And if their products are doing what the users are claiming it does (hair loss, scalp issues, texture changes+permanent chemical damage) I don't want to imagine what it will do to environment and water supply. Consumer companies really need to take responsibility.

I believe when Lorraine sold her products to the new company, she had to renounce all rights to it. It was like a divorce, if you know what I mean. But now she’s got her own products and formula that she invested tons of research and effort in. Personally, I really like them! Find them at www.curlyworld.com. She’s also got her own Salon too-Spiral X, Y, Z in Tribeca, NYC.

Are there any resources for Curly Girls on a budget? I just came across this wonderful community, and I'm really excited about the possibilities for my hair; but all those perfect products are out of my budget range right now. Can you recommend more affordable products?
@ocandro
@ocandro 5 жыл бұрын
You might want to search "drugstore curly products" on KZbin and google or drugstore cg method products etc, there are always compiled on the budget lists. Of course, with few exceptions, they are rarely as nourishing for the hair as Deva or other higher end brands, but they are still better than non curly siliconey and sulphatey crap. AS I AM is a great brand, especially coconut cowash and leave in, Shea Moisture is better if you have really coarse high porosity hair because shea butter is extremely heavy (they do have a low porosity line I think). Unless it's really out of your budget, it's often better to have fewer very good products, rich in proteins, oils, humectants and extracts than tons of stuff that does little to your hair and never makes you truly happy. Especially with styling products I think, because they are rarely as refined and these products stay on your hair the longest, so they can provide most protection and nourishment. It's best to find someone with similar hair - density, thickness, porosity and curl pattern, so you don't waste your money on stuff that doesn't work for you.

@@ocandro Thanks so much for the tip and for taking the time to reply. :) I did attract the As I Am line, and I love the coconut cowash and conditioner. I did attract some extra cash, and I just started on DevaCurl's Delight shampoo and conditioner and foam styler. They are very different than anything I've ever used, and so far I'm loving them. I'm using very little product, and my high porosity hair is retaining moisture much better. When I add up all the less expensive products I bought that didn't work, I could have bought the DC shampoo and conditioner to start with!
