I am receiving Social Security, which just turned over from Disability, and nothing else. I have a car loan because I could not afford to pay cash when the car died. It's heartbreaking to see all of the things going on around at home and around the world. I still donate what I am able. I give money to money each month to St. Jude's and I just donated to Freedom Bakeries for starving children in Yemen. Not looking for accolades ... I know not everyone can do this, but the Lord directs us to do what we can. 🙏💜🙏

This really works, even if you have a decent income. Stop spending money for coffee, fast food, and getting your nails done and put it in the bank. We packed our lunch for years, going out to eat as a treat now and then. I was able to retire at 56 with a pension and money in the bank. I do not have to rely on Social Security in order to survive and it is very comforting.

Dumpster diving, is the closest any of us will ever get to being an archaeologist, or a treasure hunter. That Cameron dude who made the movie Titanic. He spent the money he made that from that movie actually finding the Titanic. We will never accomplish anything equal to that. Finding something awesome. For free. That somebody else has thrown away. That's a pretty impressive accomplishment even if it does not make the news.

I agree with everything you're saying Tessie. I started out as a young married woman in 1960, very, very limited income. Over the years, and moving on from a bipolar alcoholic husband who left me with four babies under 6 years old, it was difficult. There were times when we made decent money (2nd husband) . At one time we had a 3300 square foot five bedroom four bathroom house. I about killed myself trying to keep it clean. Now I'm an 81-year-old widow living in a house under 900 square feet. Less is better. If you are trying to accumulate material goods to fill a hole in your soul, it will never get filled. I live on less than $1,200 a month and still manage to save something, enough to pay cash for a car when my old one died. It feels really good.

This is a much needed and appreciated video. I retired from work with some debt, so half of my pension goes to repayment of that debt. However, I've found myself going through a revolving door with my credit card. I pay it off and end up maxing it out again. This time I'm determined to pay it off and not use it except for a real emergency. I cook almost everyday and hardly ever eat out and I don't need any more clothing so you have just empowered and encouraged me in unimaginable ways. Thanks and blessings!

Oh Sister Tessie, you are so right about this society wanting instant gratification. In the good ole days, we wrote letters and only made out of state phone calls on Christmas. We saved for the things we wanted. We really had a lot of things to look forward to. As an adult, I discovered credit cards and that was horrible. Listening to family members who knew nothing about handling money. Learned some tough lessons about paying them off. My struggle is wanting to buy junk food and fast food too. I have made a conscious decision to stop eating at fast food restaurants. I need to pray for strength each day but I get through it one day at a time.

I am learning how to can and how to make soap and learning everything I possibly can learn. Next year I will be putting in a garden and praying that God blessing it. I have thought about going dumpster diving for stuff but I will need to take my daughter with me because I am physically disabled and have major problems walking. I am still willing to try and it looks like such fun online. There is a huge high from creating stuff. My daughter just got married and I was able to make the cake she wanted and the flowers she wanted for her wedding for so much less it was pennies compared to the cost of having them made! I have so enjoyed learning different things. Ps I found the strainer/sauce maker like yours at a auction for 5 dollars! I was so proud to get it! Thanks to you I knew what it was and how to use it!

I donated a LOT to thrift stores. We are dept free and it is a high for us. In fact, we try to out do each other on who can be the best cheapskate and find the best bargains when we buy something. I suggest paying off the card with the highest interest rate, first. Use cotton towels and china plates instead of buying paper towels and paper plates. The only debt we have is our mortgage. I pay my credit cards off every month. "I get a high from saving money like I used to get a high from spending money." I love it! 👍👍👍 Great video, Tessie. God bless. 💜✝

Agree. If you carry credit card debt tackle the one with the highest interest rate first and on down the line. I also pay my cards off every month because I refuse to waste money on finance charges. Paper plates, napkins and towels are for emergencies and special occasions. I’m definitely someone whose happiness comes from saving money rather than spending it!
@loris2168

They say to pay the card with the lowest balance first because you can accomplish this faster (then cut ut up/cancel it) then move on to the next one.
@witchofthewildwoods3496
@witchofthewildwoods3496 2 жыл бұрын
That strategy (paying off the lowest balance first) helps psychologically but every point counts if there’s a disparity among interest rates. Often credit cards carry a higher monthly finance charge than the minimum payment required, and that fee gets compounded so the balance gets increasingly higher even if the card is no longer being used. It feels criminal.

BIG mistake. We finally got everything paid off pretty much the same way you did paying the smallest up to the largest. We don’t owe much on our mobile home now. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel so to speak. My husband still insists on spending $80 a month on smokeless tobacco. I really wish he would kick the habit. Bare bones, paring down, walking the steps. That means cooperation with all family members. Not only pinches but at times feels like someone pulled a tooth and no painkiller. And yes tears, depression happens. Doing what you have to do. Add in trade offs? You have a bigger Christmas tree, trade off with a friend or family member who needs a larger tree and you want smaller? Trade offs make easy simple decorations with what you have or trade off with someone you know and trade for supplies or materials to make something you love. Pick up leaves Google how to press or keep there colors, pine cones too. Pick up a book from library on how to make other things be too. Stop listening to commercials who want your money, buy, buy, buy? Scrap lumber or wood scraps ask if there getting rid of any or give away a piece or two. Trees removed, sometimes they'll give you some stumps, etc most don't want pine too soft to burn, ends up shredded. Especially holidays decorations. Buying lawn decorations that cost you more, plus electric, etc. Time to change those ideas. Your right a lot of people are strapped for cash, everyone can make changes.

I once read a book called "Living on Less and Liking it More". I told my husband I learned a lot, but I had to really think about how we could save money, because I was already doing most of what was suggested. haha I broke my arm last year, and I had to quit my very active contract job. I really want to stay home again and take care of our home and really garden and such. I do have a small at-home income option, when I have time. Mostly, I want to revisit a lot of those ways that I used to conserve and save money and simplify our life a bit more again. We've never lived too high on the hog, but there is still room for more frugality and the stress relief of simplicity.

I think you should ask yourself is this a need or a want? That has helped me alot. I think there are alot of people that will learn the hard way. When hubby & I married 23 years ago we bought a brand new 99' F-150 P/U, still have it now no major problems and almost 400,000 miles on it. I really think hubby would want to be buried in it, LOL TFS

I remember when a colleague who dropped of items in a charity shop saw me buying items. The look on his face was pure shock, wasn't the fact that i bought items there but the way he looked at me labelling me "poor", kept my head high because it is not my faulty my job is not paying adequately. Now everybody is "sustainable" so it has become cool, I think we should see ourselves as the trendsetter. I got a bit sad because I didn't have a lot to do up my kitchen and it is really falling apart, so I got a new larder unit second hand for a third of the price, all my laminate in good condition free, skirting board new for free. Took a bit of time and effort to source it all, you have to be like a hawk. And I got all my own Christmas presents for free my from the freebie sites all new. The one point i find really difficult on is to save for my teenage boy, school just asked us to buy a laptop for them, plus sweets and takeaways as a treat. Also fuel prices have shot through the roof here, they have become like the stockmarket, need to find a solution to that.

I've been filling my gas tank up and only drive too pick up my check and pay my bills in one trip only. And walking too the store with little groceries cart. I've been using all my all clothes for cleaning clothes and cut the microfiber clothes into 2 swifter dust and mop heads witch costs $1.09 verses $8.00. Plus I buy $.25 t-shirts for cleaning clothes and paper towels replacement. And I have plastic meal basket and bought a 500 count box of dry wax paper sheets too lining them and my camping plates for times not wash anything. And sew shopping bags out unused shirts.

This just might be your most important video ever! Although I enjoy all of your content, this one is soooooo necessary for folks that are going to experience things unlike anything we have ever seen. The Great Depression taught our elders how to survive anything, though people now are so used to a certain way of life and it's not our/their fault. Knowledge is power!! We can ALL do with less. Thank you for imparting these words of wisdom. 👩‍🌾🏡☮💚

All true. I agree. In the long run, one is better off w/simplicity. Your beautiful acre will compound naturally in the long run as long as you stay on it, take care of it and focus on simplicity and daily life and---- never ever get swayed by fast money. Simplicity is key to confidence and well being over a life time. I find the same joy you do by doing things myself.

Oh how I needed this - yesterday I made egg rolls from scratch but I had the wrappers in the freezer found cabbage, onions, carrots, peppers put them in the food processor and cooked them added soy sauce and wine vinegar fried in oil I remembered I had in my storage stock. This AM I made waffles from scratch and put in some of my sourdough from the fridge and added the oil I used from the egg rolls. For supper we had home made French fries in the egg roll oil from yesterday. So many uses and I am not throwing the oil away!! God Bless you and stay frugal.

Due to major health problems I am unable to work and praying for disability big time! I’ve tried to sell furniture and brand new shoes but no one wants any of it! I’m still trying to figure out how to work from home. It’s definitely not easy when one is learning challenged and lives on very little money. I will start my challenge come New Year’s Day! Every time something sets me back and the feeling of being trapped is not fun! Thanks again so much Tessie and congratulations!!! Maia

Once again such a great advice video Tessie. We have never been crippled by debt apart from a mortgage that took us 25 years to oay off a very old stone home. Got rid of credit cards years ago and only use a debit card. Most important to us apart from house and car insurance is private health cover because of much prolonged health issues. I crochet, put the left over bits of yarn into a bag which makes great cushion stuffing. Also knit, sew most of my own clothes and make my own soap, and sourdough bread. I learnt most of these skills from You Tube videos, the best learning tool in the world! Always make jam from our fruit trees, vegies from our garden. Homesteading is just the best of lifestyles....and you keep us so motivated Tessie. Warm wishes to all subscribers here from South Australia. 🐾🥰

Tessie- Your thoughts and advice are spot on. We don't go out to movies or shows, so my husband still has cable, but I can see the day coming when we will pare that down. We don't use smart phones.The farm has a land line. Our cell phone plan is basic. Credit cards have their place, but they should be managed. Mine helped me through covid, when I could not get out to shop. Now we are well stocked with pantry foods and items such as hair clippers that were bought at 2020 prices. I spent money to save money and now I'm done. Like you, we are in the " use it up" mode. Dining out is rare. Our vacations are camping trips. I bought art supplies and taking free classes on line. We are semi-retired, work on our farm, saving on gas. Errands are planned out. And I will definitely continue to watch your videos for help with even more money saving tips. Thanks Tessie! ~ Diane

One of the hardest things for me was the emotional blackmail that society and merchandisers put on us at holidays. They guilt trip us to buy things for people that already have too much and don’t know half of what they already own. And, if we can’t or don’t want too go buy “stuff” we are considered bad or poor. It’s a hard decision to do this and most people don’t like change.

Rain country has a great video on how they got off the holiday, birthday bus. What is important about Christmas? What is important about your birthday? Think about if sugar is not available like during WWII. I am old and grew up where a cake was a very special event - not every day. Christmas was about giving to others, not begging for something that you want. Children will grow up well adjusted without everything that the advertisements tell them they want (not need). I got rid of tv and no longer know what is the 'cabbage patch doll' this year? People beating each other up at the store to get it - WHAT does that have to do with Christmas.

When I was younger, I was a single parent. I worked 3 jobs. I was determined never to let my children go without. I always made 2 lists. One list was a NEED list and one was a WANT list. I very rarely bought anything on the want list, unless it was a special occasion for my children. These lists help me set my priorities. One other helpful hint that helped me was doing a budget. I made sure I listed myself on the list. I paid myself every week. Even if it was $15 or $25 a week. That went in the bank for an emergency fund. Looking back, I was strong and steady and never went into debt. Tessie, I love watching your videos. You and your hubby are doing life right!

Another tip especially when you have children is when you get your income tax return use some of it on the debt and some of it on stocking up on essentials like ziplock bags, trash bags, pet food, flour, sugar, syrup, coffee, etc, buy a years supply to relieve your grocery bill stress while paying down your debt. Switch to vinegar as your main cleaning option and buy it by the gallon to save even more.

You are so right! I have been budgeting for years and been struggeling with setting anything aside. After this year, with an avalance of big bills from extra taxes to a car repair and 3x vet bills in addition to all other things. The motivation is there... We had to live bare bones to pay off all this, so now, I have continued the bare bones, and set aside 20% of my take home income to future big bills. I have listed all the yearly expenses, like car maintenance, service on my sewage and well, home repairs, and pets, and a few more. I am now in the second month of setting this money aside. It is not easy. It means I have not been to the hairdresser since May, I have not been buying any clothes or homedecor - my two favourite things to buy. (I had to replace the toaster) I have to do this, motivation is no more sleepless nights and no more worries! 😊

This is the most thumbs down I have ever seen but its because folks don't like to hear the truth about why they are in debt and how to get out of it. The only bills I owe are from My husbands hospital and doctor bills but they are being paid and will be paid off in a years time then I will be debt free again.

Okay gonna try to add my tips again! Meal prep and meal plan! Make a grocery list! Make extra portions for dinner and have leftovers for lunch the next day. You can mix it up too for instance if we have curry over rice I’ll make extra rice and the next day I’ll use the rice for rice pudding OR fried rice for lunch! If you are like me and impulse buy, utilize free grocery pickup if you are able. That way you only get what’s on your list! Yes they charge a little more for items but you’re still saving money because you aren’t spending on impulse buys! For your monthly budget… try saving up one whole months worth of budget, then use that money for the next months bills. That way you are no longer paycheck to paycheck, you are always a month ahead or more if you keep putting extra into savings, so in case something happens you won’t be stressed! If you absolutely want coffee while out… Panera Bread has a coffee subscription and the first three months are free. If you drink coffee out daily or a few times a week the subscription pays for itself. If you really want to buy something you want, challenge yourself to be frugal with your household budget and save the extra money towards something you really want!
