This is why anyone who owns a less lethal needs to talk to their local law enforcement to find out what the laws are concerning using it for self defense or protection. When I lived in California I took the time to talk to my neighbor who was a sheriffs deputy who also believed in less lethal options about buying a less lethal launcher and what I needed to know legally in his opinion. I also spent anout 45 minitues on the phone with a lieutenant with the police department in the city I lived in and we talked about the city laws, the county laws and the state laws concerning air powered launchers and when and where it was appropriate to use one. There was a lot to learn and remember, but it also gave me a pretty clear window of when and how I could use my Byrna safely to defend myself or someone around me.

@Joreel, I'm in southern California, would you care to share key points the sheriff told you regarding LL launchers and legal self defense use here in comments section? It would help local Californians lol

Honestly you don't need to talk to police, more than likely you will get wrong info. Look up penial codes pertaining to what you carry. And look up case trials and their verdict s, you will learn far more looking that up then talking to the person that only does the arresting part.

This is the reason I went on my quest for the best pepper spray and why I wanted something like the life light. To me the goal of carrying any kind of gun should be to avoid using it unless extremely necessary.
@ScaredyCatTactical4 ай бұрын
Pepper spray and pepper balls are definitely more legally acceptable these days. There’s just something that “triggers” people and prosecutors about anything that resembles a gun shape.

One of the things that was brought up to me about any sort of encounter like that is that, unfortunately, it sometimes depends upon who calls the police first. If the perp is run off and they call the police first, especially if you have a District Attorney who wants to put another "notch on his belt," there's a good chance that you could be charged, even if your reaction was entirely morally justified.

@@Outrider74 Very important point to be the one to call the police first. Criminals aren’t usually the ones calling for cops to come!

In Western Washington South of Seattle, we had two school lockdowns because of kids bringing these to school, and now in the current news, a security guard named Aaron Brown Myers is facing murder charges because he thought the kids carrying one of these were going to rob the store his son was working in. During the altercation, the 17-year-old was shot by a real firearm and died. I expect after all of the negative things the Pierce County police spokesman was saying about these markers, they will get banned. As it is they can only be carried on private property and at an airsoft shooting range. The state's description of airsoft is something that propels a BB or any other object using compressed gas. That sounds like Byrna and other brands of LTL markers cannot be carried in public. They are only good for target practice in a person's backyard or at a paintball range. So on that note, where I live it does not matter how powerful the marker is unless a person is worried about putting a hole in their wall plinking.

Thanks for sharing and I agree. I’m honestly concerned about carrying anything that resembles a firearm for Less Lethal EDC. Replicas are definitely a major concern but yes the smaller launchers like Byrna and Gavle are very much a firearm look-alike. Legal Russian Roulette unfortunately.

That's really sad that a teenager was killed because an adult mistook it for a real firearm. But it begs the question of why did the security guard draw and fire on the teen? Was the teen walking around with it out? Was he threatening anyone with it? Did he fire it at someone? Unless the teen had it in his hand and was pointing it at someone, there is no excuse for an adult security guard to open fire on the teen. It sounds like he was a little too trigger happy and didn't follow his training and verbally command the teen to place the weapon on the ground as opposed to drawing and firing on him. This unfortunately isn't the first time we've heard this kind of story, and sadly it won't be the last as more and more people are purchasing firearms and less lethal launchers without proper training classes to teach them firearm responsibility. People are becoming more paranoid about crime and being victims of crime so they are quicker to use force than they should be. This is why we need to find a way to deescalate the fear that the media has been stroking for the last 8 years, but especially the last 3 1/2 years.

This just happened days ago so the details are still coming out. I did read the kid was with friends and he was returning it to the store and the guard saw it. Almost sounds like the kid had it in his hand. I would Google the guy's name if you want to know more. this is a current event around here.

@@bretthighbeeIf he had it in his hand, then the guard might have a legal defense for what he did, but he still should have used verbal commands before pulling the trigger. This is just a really sad case from the sounds of it because the guard no matter the outcome is going to have to deal with knowing he ended the life of a teenager who probably wasn't a threat to them. And the family of course is obviously devastated at the loss of their child and are going to be searching for answers to why this happened. No matter what, our prayers need to be with both parties.

Boy was this a public service video! 90% of the scenarios I hear people discussing are "private fights". People use terms like "they are coming at you". "They will think twice about continuing toward you." No robber is coming at you. Only confrontations with someone as a prelude to a fight, be it unwarranted or mutually provoked, uses those terms. Robbers will never divulge their intentions until they are within striking distance. It you are threaten with violence, In a road rage, personal argument, or by a homeless nut job, you can't use your launcher unless your are faced with serious bodily harm. The attacker in almost all cases would have to have a deadly weapon before you could legally pull your launcher and fire. You can't pull your launcher and not fire, because you could be prosecuted or sued. If you didn't have to fire, you "aggravated" the situation by pulling a weapon. Threats and even punches or kicks might not justify the use of a launcher, unless their is a obvious great disparity is size or fighting ability. Even then, pepper spray is the only less lethal tool that might not cause you any problems with a TASER coming in second. A launcher fires a projectile and will always get the most scrutiny. The laws, which are heavily influenced by the liberals, are written to protect the criminal, as liberal local, state or federal governments never want the citizen to be able to protect themselves.

You speak the truth. It’s the legal climate we live in and unfortunately have to walk a legal tightrope as self defenders. With weapons comes tremendous responsibility, even BB guns!
