Amazing!...just I was thinking about these words "less" and " fewer"; I'm none native English speaker, I've been studying English by myself during hardly one year I'm now here. Your videos are learned and studied every night. I like your accent, method and board hahaha:)... The kids are said to eat fewer candies now than ten years ago.... I really don't know but certainly, I drink less water because I drink much more lemonade instead.... How amazing! I like to speak, write and read in English a lot... Bye

It's all very well and good but it depends on what the variable is. You could say for example, my height is less than 2 metres. The less refers to the height, which is a continuous variable and not to the countable noun (2) metres. Similary you could say she has less than $20 dollars in her pocket OR you can say she has fewer than $20 dollars in her pocket. Less refers to the value of the money (a continuous variable) and fewer refers to an integer variable (ie the number of dollar bills/coins). Hope this helps.

Scared I’ll be critiqued by my comment even if it is grammatically correct but, I see/hear “less” and “fewer” wrong so much I think it’s changing in today’s English.

Yeah, that's one of the interesting parts about language: it's democratic. When an error becomes entrenched in the language, it basically BECOMES the language and people don't even think of it as wrong anymore.

Hi Alex, thank you for the video. Could you help me with one phrase? I've heard a line in a song "I be your woman". I can assume that's grammatically incorrect, but anyways. Is it future or present tense? I couldn't find a structure "I be". Thanks in advance.

Thanks a lot .. and I was confused few things in the Quiz..#5and 6 . Both sentences of#5 "I think you need to party fewer times a week; It seems 'party' is considering as countable. and yet #6 next sentence like "I think you need to party less". It revert to unconuntable as if I must comply .. should I think #5 is like " how many parties we talking about" and #6 is like during the party ? Anybody help me out plz!

what's the difference between less and lesser??
@engvidAlex6 жыл бұрын
"Less" is an adverb, "Lesser" is an adjective. I'm less certain about the result now than I was before. He's a lesser candidate than the others we are considering. Do you think he deserves a lesser punishment? (a less severe punishment...a lower level of punishment) I hope this helps! Typically, you use "lesser" in relation to a noun, and "less" in relation to an adjective or another adverb.
