Hi Neuber I'm an English teacher as well, I'm from Brazil and I suppose you are too. The verb choose has the following patterns: chose something/someone, choose to (verb). So you are correct, you can say: I chose the rules, which fits the pattern (chose something).

I have opposite opinion because you shouldn't be very smart to understand some ruls of English grammar, but understanding live speech can take a lot of attention. As a result of listening to not too clear English you will manage to understand native speakers in real life.

Question: about the verbs decide and choose - what if you say: She decided quitting was the best option; Chris chose staying at home instead of going out. Would those be incorrect? And is there are list of verbs which only followed by an infinitive? Is there a rule or some way to know when we only use an infinitive or gerund?
@colwi75 жыл бұрын
Hello Alex, Thanks for the lesso. What about: "Looking forward to hearing from you" Could you please explain when do we use "to" and the gerund?
@albiss11645 жыл бұрын
'Looking forward to' is always followed by a gerund, as stated in rule #1 below. 😃 Here are three situations where a gerund must be used after the preposition 'to': 1) If 'to' is part of a phrasal verb or verb + preposition combination: I look forward to meeting your parents tonight! / He confessed to killing his next-door neighbour. 2) If 'to' is part of an adjective + preposition combination: I am addicted to watching soap operas on TV! / She is committed to improving the education system. 3) If 'to' is part of a noun + preposition combination: His addiction to gambling has caused a lot of stress for his family./ Her great dedication to teaching inspires her students.

I've decided learning these by heart would be a good idea. I plan looking at them regularly. Most people need accompanying with their learning and I hope finding a solution won't take too long. Seriously though this might be aimed at a basic level but it might, all the same, be useful to explain that people may find structures that don't appear to behave properly. If I tried teaching this in class I would immediately get someone show me an example they had found online, which didn't follow... damn iphones!

Thank you, Alex. The title of your lesson is "Common verbs followed by infinitives." Is it a passive voice? Why doesn't it have "are"? Common verbs are followed by infinitives.
@Masa1807195812 жыл бұрын
as far as I know, to be ( in the futur ) and gerund ( Habits in past ),,, He stops to smoke,,means he does not smoke any more in the futur... but he stops smoking ,,means ( he has been smoking since many years until now ) , he stops ( Habits smoking in the Past time ),,,,to be is plan to the futur,, gerund is opposite...meaning is maybe same meaning,, but Background is different..

Hi Alex, is there a rule to know which verbs use only infinitive and only gerund??
@engvidAlex7 жыл бұрын
Most have to be memorized, but know that you always have to use a gerund after a preposition. For example... I've been thinking about GETTING a new job. She's interested in JOGGING. We're getting excited about GOING to the show. You also have some verbs of desire that are usually followed by an infinitive. These verbs include want, need, hope, and wish. I hope this helps just a bit. :)

What the logic behind this ? Why some are followed by infinitives and other by Gerunds . There has to be some explanation or they are like idioms just mug it up or Train your ears
@catanarchist255 жыл бұрын
Who said English (or any language, really) is logical?
@raymondhu51235 жыл бұрын
As an English teacher for the Chinese students, I always explain it to my students that 'to do' means you do it later that the first action 'doing ' means it happens at the same time. First you need to plan, then you do it. So ,I plan to do it. first you tell sb, then he leaves later. Tell him to leave. If two actions happen at the same time, then it is doing. Think of doing. think and do happens at the same time, so it is' doing' instead of 'to do' Correct me if I am wrong
@waseemsulehri37905 жыл бұрын
I think it's matter of experience through experiences, such confusions starts reducing.
