Idk why i clicked on this notification so fast, its been a while since ive nerded out to tolkiens works but i think it's time to return, especially with autumn brewing for walking holidays. I live in the west country and my home is alike to the shire and i love travelling the public rights of way through fields for miles in autumn evenings

Tolkien was a marvel. He created a whole world and mythology in his head. No computers to help store information, just his head and probably and endless supply of notebooks full of notes. Just amazing that he managed to do it and that it somehow struck a chord with enough people to survive and thrive even today. He was really the god of his creation.

The highlighting of Dunland is of particular appreciation. It does seem that even after Erebor was lost to Smaug, the Dunlendings did allow the Dwarves to settle, mine in the lower Misty Mountains and trade with the men. So, they may not have been all bad before Saruman stoked the fire of hatred against the Rohirrim.

Yeah, they ended up being tools in the War of the Ring. That is also a very common human trait; antagonize a group (Rohirrim) and make them an enemy. The Dunlendings sound like ordinary people to me. With a fascinating history though.

@@91djdj Then when Theoden spared their lives, it basically surprised the hell out of them as such mercy and kindness was in total contradiction to what they heard from Saruman, such as how the Rohirrim were merciless and killed their prisoners.

The Dunlendings were an unlucky and angry people, who'd gotten kicked around mercilessly by many of the people depicted as "heroes" in LotR and elsewhere: they may haver been driven out of Minhiriath, in the beginning, by the Numenorians, and then after settling in an empty province that their descendants, the Gondorians, either didn't want (seemingly) or couldn't hold, they got driven out with great slaughter by the Rohirrim, a people so cruel that they hunted the Woses (whom the Dunlendings were seemingly friendly with) for SPORT! Then, when they retook Calenardhon, the Rohirrim chief who drove them back was a notorious savage accused of cannibalism and other crimes. Frankly, they had less to fear from the Orcs (who never seemed to have harmed them), and both Gondor and Rohan owed them an awful bloody lot of reparation.

Everyone who's ever looked at a map of middle earth has seen these places but know next to nothing about most of them. The Iron Hills would have been a major stop for me; gotta see how the dwarves feast and party there compared to the Hobbits 😂

I read somewhere in my research that the Enedwaith was filled with large trees of the forested area. Then Arnor cut down most of the trees to build their mighty ships. They stripped the area of most of the trees and changed the landscape in the following ages.

I am right or wrong to think that Melkor built his Utumno fortress in the Iron Hills before the dwarves came along? I've long been fascinated by these little known places on the Middle-earth map. I've wondered if they are were as populated and detailed as the places that we are more familiar with, but never made it onto Tolkien's map. I've wondered in Harad and Rhun and east of Nurnen were made up of assorted kingdoms that we've never heard of. I've often thought that if I wanted to sit out the War of the Ring that the lands to the west of the Shire might be peaceable. I've also wondered at the West Farthing, particularly around Michel Delving [the Great Digging], which I gather was the most populated area of the Shire, yet little detail is shown on the Shire map, most attention being focused around Hobbiton.

I'm pretty sure that a Utumno was meant to be farther north in Forodwaith or maybe around the area of the ice bay of Forochel, explaining why it's so cold

The Iron Hills were too far south. There's no definitive answer about it's location on a 3rd Age map but my best guess is that it is in the Northern Wastes somewhere near Forodwaith or the Ice Bay of Forochel.

Looking at the Iron Hills, Esgaroth, the Celduin and Carnen, It's hard to imagine that these were unsettled lands. There must have been, as I have said on another video, many settlements near those rivers--Dorwinion being a huge part--all the way down to Rhun. The trade networks in times of peace would have made almost constant golden ages as regions rose and fell in power due to the changefulness of Men.

You are right to say that the Emyn Muil are a traditional borderland, but have more importance that you give credit! The canyon formed by the Great River Anduin was heavily fortified with the Argonath, supersized likenesses of Isildur & Anarion, first joint-kings of Gondor (and each king over Ithilien and Anorian), carved from the very stone of the hills. From the high hill of Amon Hen, the Seat of Seeing, men could survey vast areas with the naked eye and keep watch over Gondor's borders. Across the river to the east was Amon Lhaw, the Seat of Hearing, a literal listening post. These hills flanked the Falls of Rauros, where Anduin cascaded down, a major impediment to travel along the river.

I would love to see more lore friendly art of the Iron Hills. I've always found that dwarven stronghold very interesting, especially since it has never fallen to a foe throughout history.

I wish Dunland, its settlements, and its culture were describes in greater detail. The Dunlendings to me are not evil men, but tragic men kicked out of their homes, and who were persuaded into serving true evil. Tolkien did make notes in early LOTR writings stating that some Dunlendings journeyed to Dunharrow where they gathered with Rohan to help Gondor in the fight against Sauron. So it definitely seems that many Men from Dunland overcame the corruptive lies of Saruman, eventually joining the men in the west, and gaining honor as Free Peoples.

From what the legendarium says, Dunland was a rocky place, not very suitable for farming or grazing. The Dunlendings were considered horribly poor and in a constant state of near extinction. Here's hoping the Reunited Kingdom and Rohan helped to make that land fruitful so all could live in peace and plenty.
