Check out the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railway in Chama, NM. Not too far from Durango. It is really scenic, too. (Hint: take the run that goes half way and stops for lunch at the Osier station, and comes back to Chama - Best run, especially with kids!!) Lots of beautiful camping in or near Chama.

A very short ride is from Utica, NY to Thendara, NY on the Adirondack Railroad. Some excursions are complete with “train robbers” on horses! Our adult children still talk about it from when they were little.

The Durango Silverton is the best by far. The California Zephr on AMTRAK runs from Chicago to San Francisco. It is fabulous. Sunsets over the amber waves of grain in the plains Southwest from Chicago. Then, traverse the Rocky Mountains between Denver and Grand Junction through Glenwood Canyon beside a roaring river.

If you go back to Alaska, you have to go on the The White Pass and Yukon Route train! It's a Canadian and U.S. Class III 3 ft (914 mm) narrow-gauge railroad linking the port of Skagway, Alaska, with Whitehorse, the capital of Yukon. Fantastic train trip and very educational.

I was an electrician on NJ Transit, the headlight is a federal requirement for safety. Most people ignore the multi-ton engine coming at them but notice the headlight when they hear the horn. I went to many a collision where people did not see the train! HUH!!

Not to be missed along with this train ride is their amazing (and included free) museum. It is just down the path from the depot. It is collection of actual planes, trains, & automobiles. It is owned by the family that owns the train and is one of the most interesting museums I have ever been in.

In 2017 I moved back to MN to care for my senior father I found out he loves trains. He’s a private person and before I figured out his love of trains he made a comment about taking the Darango train ride when we were rving through Colorado, I said I’d never get stuck on something I couldn’t get off when I wanted to so we never took the ride. He is now 92 and I didn’t know about the Duluth train. So thank you! I will make sure we make a special trip there next summer just to ride the train!

I have a lot of family all over the SW Colorado, and NM area. My Great grandfather and great-great grandparents rode that train in the late 1800's I did the cascade winter train with the actual owner of the train, who happened to be taking the ride, hell of a nice guy, like a kid playing with his trains.

There is a train in Central CA that goes from Felton to Santa Cruz. (3 hour tour) It is an awesome train ride through the redwoods and fern groves and drops you right off at the Santa Cruz Beach boardwalk!! It was really fun. There is also another one that is called Redwood Forest Steam Train that takes you up on the top of a nearby mountain. It is a 75 minute ride. Both of these are out of Roaring Camp in Felton, CA. I want to do this train! Or the long one. My younger son moved to Denver CO after finishing college in Georgia. I sold my house in Georgia in August 2020 and went to Illinois to live with a friend and I bought my RV there in October 2020 The first place I went in it was Denver CO to see my son for Thanksgiving 2020. I was out west in the winter and went up the coast in the Spring. I loved Oregon. I went back to Denver in June and I was here on the east coast for Fall. I've enjoyed my first year on the road! I can't believe you mentioned Dollywood! I was just there but didn't ride the train that time. 💖 Red

If your in the neighborhood of Skagway, AK.... ride the railroad going to the Canada boarder. It follows the route that the 1898 gold miners took to get the Klondike. Each person had to carry food and supplies to last the entire trail plus mining supplies. Most miners had to traverse the 'stairway' 2 or more times.

The Durango & Silverton is on my bucket list! Wow--drone shots from a moving train?! How tricky was that to re-capture the drone?? Have you ever done the Skunk Train ride in northern CA? It, too, has an all day and half-day option. The last time I went was in the late 1980s, and my then-high-school-age daughter and I spent pretty much the entire 8 hour round trip standing up in the open air (no roof!) observation car (no seats!) taking pictures of the train and the scenery. It goes through gorgeous coast redwoods.

There are so many amazing train rides in Colorado alone! The Georgetown train is really cool because it has unique bridges that loop to go up the steep grade to Silver Plume through the narrow canyon. Right off I 70 in Georgetown. There is a related mine tour, separately, and they have a Santa train in the winter. We haven’t yet done the La Veta train or the one in Leadville. But both of those areas are gorgeous. The train out of Chama New Mexico is also stunning. Pagosa Springs CO is worth a visit down in that area and the road to Chama is gorgeous. So many options! Trains are neat. Rail trails are neat too! The outdoor museum loop around Leadville is worth it! Clockwise! Enjoy your travels and experiences!

Marisa and Nathan, you can't see it now; but these life adventures that you're taking your children on will ultimately enrich the lives of your grandchildren. One day, when your children, their spouses and grandchildren are spending time with you, you'll see what I'm taking about. You will at that moment feel wealthy beyond measure.

Hensley's face at 4:23 mins. She has lost the little girl child face. You can see the beauty she will have as an adult. I laugh every time JJ talks.."I'm so tired" 🤣
