Thank you for the video, I really enjoyed the format, the trivia especially. I have begun studying kalis three months ago, so very little has yet stuck with me firmly, and I try to see as many coherent perspectives as I can manage at once to form a comprehensive understanding. May I ask what is the advantage of the cutting motion with a fixed wrist? - I was taught that whenever I am swinging a knife or simulating a blade with my stick, I should do the chopping motion in order to help the blade in penetrating the flesh or clothing and getting out again. I am guessing a bolo has enough weight behind it that the chopping motion is unnecessary for going all the way through, or that the fixed wrist helps withstand the impact spreading backwards thought the stick when it has landed on bones or hard surface of that kind. Is that correct?

Thank you for the relevant question… your thoughts are not wrong… the concepts in kali are the following to respond to your query. 1.chopping motion are also used to cut through such as to chop a limb or cut off the head but these are not the primary purpose. Chopping off a head in war or in assasination during tribal cultures were common then but these were done when the victims are dead. 2. Most of the strikes in kali are slices and are intended to disable the limbs by large cut through the flesh. The concept is that in a defensive move is a slash thru the limb or torso, the kill concept most of the time is done by a stab. 3. The common known Kali sword is the Kris (Keri’s) I.e. with wavy blade, which is primarily designed to create a deep slice through the flesh, another type of bolo is called “ barong” with a prominent bulging mid belly, also designed to cause a deep cut using a slash. 4. Of course the chop is also used for the kill to cut off the head or to disable the limb, not in the active fight but when the enemy is rendered disabled. Or when a rare opportunity is seen during the fight, I hope you can get what I mean. I will discuss this in my trivia portion. Thank you. Watch for the next lesson, weapon juggling.

Btw I forgot to mention that the strikes in Arnis the Mano are different I.e. using a stick. Kali uses the stick too as a practice tool in place of a blade, but the strikes mostly simulates the blade, considering the sharp edge. The chopping motion in arnis is not to cut and not accurately described as to chop but to strike as a blunt instrument, the move is a wrist action, similar as chopping only that it may be used in all striking angles being cylindrical in shape.
