Another way of understanding how one currency fairs with regard to the other, is to understand that the base is always 1. If the quote is getting closer to 1 it is gaining, if it goes further from 1 is it loosing. If it dips below 1 it is now stronger than the base.

I'm new to this myself, but if you were trading EUR/USD, if it took more dollars to buy the EUR, that would mean the EUR would be stronger, so you would buy the EUR. If on the other hand you were trading EUR/USD, and it took less dollars to buy the EUR, the USD would be stronger, and you would sell the EUR. If you were trading USD/EUR, if it took more EUR to buy the dollar, the USD would be stronger, so you would buy USD etc. Hopefully this helps! Cheers, Rob
