Will you please help pronounce the following Hebrew words? It will help solidify my understanding on correctly pronouncing the words by knowing which vowels, especially the Shwa vowel, to vocalize. 1)הַלְּבָנ֔וֹן 2) וּקְצִיעָה 3) כַּרְשִׁינָא 4) הַקְּטרֶת 5) קָרְטוֹב 6) כַלְּבָנָ֗ה 7 הָֽרְחֵלִ֔ים וְהַלְּבונָה

Hello, I was wondering how to pronounce the word "לְשַׁקֵר", I've roughly translated it's phoenetic pronunciation to "le-sha-ke-r" but am unsure if it is correct. Many thanks!

That look right :-) With my transliteration I would write it: leh/sha/KHE-R Meaning "to lie".

Why do you have different letters for the same vowel sound? Is there a rule for using one over the other? Or, can they be used interchangeably?
@TheWORDinHEBREW
@TheWORDinHEBREW 6 ай бұрын
Shalom! First, you should not confuse Hebrew letters with Hebrew vowels. In Hebrew, all letters are consonants, while vowels are separate marks that are added to the letters (before the vowels system was implemented, 4 letters, א,ה,ו,י were also used as vowels). As to your question, there are some letters that look different, yet produce the same sound because in ancient Hebrew (or when the Hebrew alphabet was created), the sound each of them made was more obviously different than it is today (one was more guttural and the other was less guttural for example). With time, those differences got less noticeable. Today, the difference is so, so subtle, that I feel it is just easier to teach them with the same sound, as my purpose is to SIMPLIFY it for you. For those students who want to get more technical and learn all about those subtle differences , they should take more advance Hebrew courses for Biblical Hebrew. I hope this helps & thank you for learning with me :-)
@marounaboujaoudeh1401
@marounaboujaoudeh1401 6 ай бұрын
@TheWORDinHEBREW I meant vowel signs. For example, what's the difference between kamats and patakh if they both sound like "ah"? I think your explanation for consonants applies to vowels too. Historically they were different sounds but now for simplification they're the same. Right? 😊
@TheWORDinHEBREW
@TheWORDinHEBREW 6 ай бұрын
@@marounaboujaoudeh1401 Yes, that's correct. Historically they had subtle differences, but today, those differences are just not worth the struggle, especially not for beginners. My goal here is to SIMPLIFY Hebrew, so it is quickly accessible to people without getting into unnecessary and mostly un-useful technicalities. Those who do want to go deeper, are more than welcome to do so with more advance Hebrew courses. My focus here is in teaching the basics, so anyone can start reading (specifically the Bible) with correct Hebrew pronunciation, just like a native Israeli would read it today.

In this Hebrew word the shwa under the letter caf is vocalized since it has a dagesh in it despite the the letter Bet has a short vowel underneath it~ so the this word is pronounced bah/keh/fah/reem, right? בַּכְּפָרִֽים

wait so if one dot makes the sound "EE" why is it not like that on duolingo when it asks what sound the one dot makes its not ee but i so for la/meh-d + 1 dot under letter sound Li and Not Le? but makes the Le sound.

@TheWORDinHEBREW
@TheWORDinHEBREW 8 ай бұрын
It’s a question of transliteration system. In my transliteration, I use double e “ee”, for the sound of that one dot under a letter, because it’s much more likely that people will understand the intended sound when they see “ee” instead of “i”. The sound should be “ee” as in “ bEE” and not “i” as in “tie”. What dulingo and other systems do, is trying to match the Hebrew vowels to English vowels, which I believe is a wrong approach, because they do not produce the same sound all the time. Which is why my transliteration system is different and aim to focus on the correct sound to pronounce. So, with my transliteration, “Li” will be “lee” and “Ani” will be “ah/NEE”.

Technically yes, but the differences are so subtle, especially these days, which is why I combine them. This makes learning the basics of Hebrew much easier for beginners. Once you learn these basics, you can break it up to to the more technical level if you wish, and learn those subtle differences and the many nuances of Hebrew grammar :-).
