Lesson 275: Muay Boran 'Throw the Giant' (part 1)

The ancient Muay Thai 'throw the giant' techniques is applied as a counter throw when your opponent does a front kick, you side step, turn, grab the leg, put unto your shoulder and throw. With this move, you can end the fight if your opponent does not expect the throw and they fall on their face or neck, especially on concrete. But if to finish convincingly, follow-up by placing your knee on the back and continue to strike as needed.

So in a modern context, where would you use this? Because you can’t do it in kboxing/Muaythai and people don’t throw kicks in self defense situations, and in a world where bjj exists, I wouldn’t turn my back to people anyway.

there are those who would throw kicks in self defense. and technically, turning the back only occurs once you grab hold of the leg and throw. in this instance, your opponent is off balance. and if you turn your back from the outside of the leg, it would be difficult for your opponent to take your back. it is unlike throwing a back kick that misses and your opponent is free to take your back. then in a grappling scenario, you should think twice.
