Hello ASL Heroes!!! Hey, I could really use your help. If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you. A small (or more if you can afford it) donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com. You can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here right now and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!” www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=64QMBRBXQSV6G Or, if you prefer "Cash App" you can use: cash.me/$Lifeprint Or use Patreon at www.patreon.com/ASLU Every little bit helps so much! Thanks! - Dr. Bill p.s. Want to have your very own USB drive with four semesters worth of ASL instruction for just $79.95? Bill Vicars “DR” and you still want us to donate $$? I work hard as welder and I’m Deaf. I earn only 28k and bet you earn over 50k and still want our money?
@sign-language
@sign-language 4 жыл бұрын
@@blazeroranger Hello, please know that I have great respect for welders and others who do hands-on work. My uncle was a welder. He has passed away and I miss him greatly. Here in California an average welder earns around $42,760. (A welder at the top end of the scale here earns around $68,590. (That's according to: www.careerexplorer.com/careers/welder/salary/california/ ) Welding is such a useful skill! It makes me wonder if you might want to consider becoming an entrepreneur (if you are not already), opening your own welding business, and (possibly) increasing your earnings. I don't know if you would want to move here though since of course the flip side of that is the cost of living in California is much higher than many other places. The average rent for a 2-bedroom home in California is around $1,440 per month (or $2,197 a month if you live near or in San Francisco and similar places). Anyway for what it is worth -- donations go toward the following and other expenses: * dedicated IP address fee for Lifeprint.com. * domain hosting fee (for lifeprint.com, asluniversity.com, aslpah.com, asl.ms, asl.bz, asl.tc, ... * domain name registration fee * cloud storage fee (Dropbox) * internet / data fee * secure socket layer (ssl) certificate fee * equipment purchase, maintenance, and replacement costs * hard drives / usb drives / SD cards / cameras / tripods / monitors * software (for editing the videos) * stipends and snacks for the interns * electricity (for the home studio / office) I certainly do not want anyone to donate who is not in a position to do so. However -- those who are in a position to do so -- sure, I would very much appreciate help with operating expenses. An alternate good (free) way for viewers to express their support or thanks is to simply subscribe and/or click on the "like" button each time you watch an instructional video. Clicking "like" on a creator's videos helps the KZbin algorithm decide whether or not to recommend the videos to others.

Both of my hands have been paralized for 15 months due some medication I took for 2 weeks. I always wanted to learn ASL. I found you on here and now you and all the students are my therapy. You really have a great bunch of learners! Thank you for the education and entertainment. Just finished with lesson 33 even though I still can't make the letters s, r, and t properly all of the time, I'm memorizing and learning. How wonderful you are to teach the world the art of signing. God bless you all. I humbly thank you again from the bottom of my heart. RESPECT.

Onion powder is really good on popcorn. Depending on how I'm feeling I'll choose from a lot of different things like onion powder, cheese powder, garlic powder, Tony Chachere's, smoked paprika, chili powder, cayenne powder, turmeric, achiote powder, Tajin, basil, etc. No bland popcorn for me.

33:36 You're going over the origin of the sign "Coke". You use an A handshape, and tap your thumb on your chin. What's that sign? I thought maybe a version of "brave" but I don't know. You do it another time in the video but I can't find it.
@sign-language
@sign-language 2 жыл бұрын
While in most circumstances that sign would not be considered to mean "brave" but rather it is more along the lines of "long suffering" -- you are right in your interpretation in this particular context. The inflection used with that sign along with the situational context combines to mean bravely patient and willing to suffer through something. The sign is based on the sign PATIENT. Also compare the chin-based version of SUFFER.

I like this video. Interesting one. The Horny part got me laughing 🤣🤣Dr. Bill, can you please help me with the signs for pawpaw, pineapple, Guava, blueberries and others?
@sign-language
@sign-language 4 жыл бұрын
Nana, Pineapple has many different versions. See: kzbin.info/door/Zy9xs6Tn9vWqN_5l0EEIZAsearch?query=pineapple Or just use this cute version: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z6madmiIltCKmsk Blueberry: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJiXn3mYecRneLM Guava is generally spelled in ASL. To find a sign for it you would likely need to check with Deaf signers in India or Thailand. I'll see what I can do. I actually used to know a sign for Guava many years ago (borrowed from South America) but have long since forgotten it. (Use it or lose it. Dang.) "Pawpaw" Is also typically spelled in ASL -- or rather it isn't discussed much at all. Best bet for a sign would be Canadian signers. Again, I'll see what I can do.

While it is a fact that in the American Deaf Community we tend to use lots of facial expressions -- perhaps something to consider is that different cultures use and emphasize different levels and types of facial expressions. A student's cultural background or home life can sometimes strongly influence their tendency to use (or not use) lots of facial expressions.

I think Yoon did a fantastic job. Also keep in mind that he is on the spot, in front of the class, and being video taped. If a person is not used to that, it can be a bit nerve-wracking. So thanks, Yoon, for being willing do this and help us all learn! Kudos and thanks to Dr. Bill and all his volunteer students!

40:45 could you be talking about durians?
@sign-language
@sign-language 3 жыл бұрын
Yes! At around the 40:33 mark of the Lesson 33 Video ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIargHxvapaah5Y ) I start discussing a type of fruit and then use a process I refer to as "indeterminate spelling" (or indeterminate fingerspelling). You see me start to spell "durian" D-U-R... at which point I realize I'm not going to be able to finish spelling it with any level of confidence in the accuracy of the spelling so I just add the general sign for "SPELL." The resulting meaning is as if I'm stating "D, U, R, ... something." So bravo to you for figuring out that I was referring to a "durian" (and/or durians) and even bigger bravo for catching an authentic example of indeterminate fingerspelling! @@sign-language that's great! thanks dr bill... I'm Malaysian (situated next to singapore) so that's how I guessed lol. GoReact is used by a significant number of ASL teachers. It has positives and negatives. The negative (from my perspective) is that grading of videos (even if done efficiently) is a huge time drain. It is so much faster just to meet one on one with students during a set time each semester and give them immediate in-person feedback. Of course with the COVID pandemic going on that is not going to happen at my day job university (or most other universities) for the rest of the semester. The other thing that concerns me is that some implementations of GoReact pass the cost onto the students. I'm very much against passing unnecessary costs onto students because it inappropriately harms those who are socioeconomically disadvantaged. (1 out of 5 college students in California are "food insecure." 1 out of 10 are "housing insecure.")
