I grew up in a Spanish speaking house. My Mother and Father both spoke Spanish to each other but did not speak too much Spanish to us. They did not want us to have a hard time in school. I absorbed as much as I could but I am not fluent by any means, I took 2 years of Spanish in high school and 2 years in college. I think you are a great teacher and shouldn't stop. My parents grew up in New Mexico so the Spanish is a different accent and slower than in Mexico and Spain. Your accent and speed is perfect for learning is easy to understand and it is obvious by the other comments that it works. Thank you for taking the time to do this.

Ok…. So i never comment but i want do an amaze shout out to Qroo Paul…. I’m going to El Salvador in four months and just moved to west (gulf) Florida and figured i should learn some Spanish…. At 50+ i was already prepared it would be difícil! I’d been using an app (rhymes with suo-ringo) which is helpful in some ways but doesn’t explain the WHY words/phrases are structured the way they are…. WHOA! I love listening to Paul… not only helps answer the questions almost before we need the answer but his voice and calm demeanor is likely the most enjoyable and helpful videos on Spanish for adult learning I’ve come across…. Thank you Qroo Paul!

Thank you so much for putting these lessons out here for free :) I come from a Puerto Rican family and a Italian family and never got to learn Spanish since my parents divorced in childhood. I have always been embarrassed when people told me I wasn’t a real Latina ( even though I was raised around alot of PR culture) if I didn’t know the language , but learning bit by bit has been helping me feel like I can claim my culture. The fact that you made this for native English speakers just hits different, thank you again!

I recently decided to start from scratch and I'm using the cero to conversation course. I'm so glad that I chose this route and this course. I've been hovering around intermediate level, without much progress so this course is perfect for me. I know enough Spanish be able to interchange my European Spanish when needed. Thanks for this series Paul. I found it a while back when I started my Spanish journey in April, but was disappointed to see that it wasn't being continued. Upon return, I've now learned that you are continuing it which is great. I've been searching for a step-by-step but have not found what I was looking for in other KZbin series'. I particularly like the sentence structure translation practice that you include with each video. Re-watching the video makes the practice easier and I'm learning faster. I have a pretty good vocabulary via SRS, but struggled with sentence structure. Did you ever use a online teacher (i.e. italki) or mostly the Mexican population you were serving? Your teaching personality is encouraging and challenging without letting lessons get overwhelming. I'm looking forward to lesson 8 and beyond.

Learning Spanish for decades now (in different places in Spain and Cuba) and nobody ever told me the difference between gustar (like like) and caer bien (like) 😝 that’s really mean - always thinking it would be the other way round more like the English expression “I’m falling for her/him” 🙄

The grammatical pattern approach has been extraordinarily helpful to me. I am finally beginning to see the patterns. Also looking at the word by word translation was something I tried for 40 years to do to help learn patterns, but was always told by teachers DO NOT DO THAT. I am delighted to see you do that and it also helps me. I was confused for years but finally I think I get it because you pointed out subject, indirect object, and redundancies. . Thanks.

In Latin America, usted is going to be what you use most of the time. As your Spanish improves, you should move to that because you won't qualify for the "newbie pass" anymore. When starting the language, the tú form is just so much easier to use. It gets students communicating faster and that keeps them engaged and committed to learning more.

Los gatos no les gusta el agua Cats don't like water. This is a sentence from the children's show Perro y Gato. This is a children's cartoon on HBO in demand. When I first started learning Spanish I watched this series over and over. When I first saw this sentence in Spanish it struck me as really strange that you needed seven words to say a four word English sentence cats don't like water. Again, Paul great video, but I would suggest that these videos are more self contained than you night imagen. People who get sent to this episode by an algorithm might have seen other videos, not from your channel. So telling people they won't understand this lesson unless we have seen the previous lessons might put some people off. OK to mention that there was a previous lesson that talked about "duele", but I honestly think people can learn to use gustar and encantar with out already knowing "duele". It's great that you start your lesson with a review of the last lesson and how duele works. I think that it is extremely cool that you start your discussion of this structure with "duele". This makes your approach totally unique. I think this might come from your background in law enforcement and saying where does it hurt was something that came up early on in your language learning. For me the most interesting part of this lesson was learning how to use "caer". This idom is weird for me so the practice was great. I am making a list of Qroo Paul vocabulary words. A lot of words in your more recent lessons are already on .my other vocabulary lists but many of them are not. importar politicas interesar and resultados we're not on any list. What is cool about these words is that they are all cognates and easy to remember. Keep up the great work. Nice to see you back in action with this great series. I gave it a like and have already watched it a couple of times.

@@QrooSpanish Thanks for the Grammer tip Paul. This inspired me to go back and watch my old HBO kids favorite show Perro y Gato again. I copied down the exact dialog. First the dog jumps in the water and splashes the cat. Then the cat says in "cats don't like water". The dog answered " por quy no te gusta el agua". I noticed it sounded like they were using the pronoun "nos" instead of "les" but it sounded like the cat said: "A los gatos no nos gusta el agua" Then later says what sounded like: "Nos gatos no nos gusta el agua" We cats don't like water (is this grammatically correct) At last the dog asks: "Por que a los gatos no nos gusta el agua" I kind of looked this up then wrote it down and typed it up for my own benefit but hope that some of my fellow students might also benefit. I appreciate your list of verbs that fit this pattern. I would like a more exhaustive list. And a list of verbs that don't fit this pattern. Do we have to memorize the lists or is there some indicator?

What a shame. I just completed lesson 7. 20:12 I zoomed though these . Learned more in this last 3 weeks than 4 months. I put together probably 100’s of sentences.

I always look forward to your lessons! And of course I always have a question after. Why don´t we use the personal a in front of María? ie.: A Juan le gusta María. Thanks!

In this case, think of it more as "to". To Maria....To my dog....etc.

Great lesson that I continue to need reinforcement! Question is it more common here in México to start the sentence when using the redundant le with the person ( clarifier) up instead of at the end of the sentence? (Example Le duele la espalda a Juan. )

You'll hear both. I don't metion that option in this video just to keep things simple.

Thank you. I was taught to put clarifier at the end which has been awkward for me. Placing it up front seems more natural. I’m switching…😁

This was the best of this series, I think (& they've all been great). I've been seeing parecer, molestar, importar & caer bien being used and didn't put it together that it was the same construction as gustar, I just was confused about the pronoun & the a. Now I think I will recognize the pattern!!! Thank you so much! BTW, is there a name for that construction?
@QrooSpanish

Thanks, Lisa. I don't know of a specific name for that construction. You will normally see something like, verbs like GUSTAR...lol.

@@QrooSpanish I've noticed (since I sent this reply) on SpanishDict they call these "intransitive verbs". Haha, I'm not sure that's any more succinct than "verbs like GUSTAR" 😊

In English, we say that something or someone "disgusts me." This is the same construction and I assume that the English verb infinitive really ought to be construed as "to be disgusting to..." I also assume that gustar and disgusting have the same Latin origins.

We're filming in Costa Rica for the next two weeks. It will probably be out right after that. As far as the other lessons, they are very "a la carte". They fill certain gaps that people may have in their Spanish. I would recommend looking at the gerund ones and the subjunctive series.

Is there a label, term, or grammatical phrase for the pattern described in this video? You refer to it as "the pattern" throughout, but if I wanted to look up other verbs that follow the same construction as encantar, caer, gustar, or doler what terminology would I type into my search engine? Thanks for the great content! Very helpful.

Would you use llevarse bien/mal in similar context as caer bien/mal. As I understand llevarse refers to getting along with someone but that seems to mean to like someone. I get along with my neighbor which may imply I like her or does it. Hmm is there a subtle difference? Caer bien is what I'd call a reverse structure me cae bien (I like him) but llevarse not so, Tom se lleva bien con Mary (Tom gets along well with Mary) Have I got it right and is it used in Mexico?

It is reasonable to infer that people who get along well together like each other. l asked my wife what she thought -- she is from Colombia -- and she said that you can get along with people you don't like. I suppose she has a point. And yes, we use llevarse bien/mal in Mexico. Juan se lleva bien con sus colegas.

Years, and I do mean years, ago I took Latin. As I recall either the indirect case was labeled as "to" or "for". I wonder if it might be easier for English speakers to express pain as "for" me there is pain instead of "to". Just a thought. I really enjoy your teaching.

I have tried to explain it that way in the past and then students started confusing it with por/para. In other words they would start to overthink it and get analysis/paralysis....lol. Thinking of it as "to" will make the more complex constructions using LE clearer down the line. There is a method to my madness...lol

You use the personal A when the person is the object of the sentence, not the subject. These are unusual constructions for English-speakers because the person liked is actually the subject of the sentence, not the object.

Absolutely fantastic videos and teaching! This video has me lost though! 'A Maria la duele el ojo' I am thinking there is 'la' here for the feminine Maria. Next you give the example: 'A Juan le duele la pirerna derecha'. Why here is it 'le' and not 'lo' for the masculine Juan? If 'le' here, then why not 'le' for Maria also? Why also 'el' for eye, but then 'la' for pierna? This confuses me. Lastly there is Juan (M) but the sentence ends with derech(a) -female. I suppose the leg is feminine here and this is something that just needs to be memorised? Thanks Paul!
@craigmoore7821
@craigmoore7821 21 күн бұрын
The one with Maria did in fact say le. You were right that it should say le, and it did. Visual error I'm guessing. We're all human. For the eye and leg, you are using the el or la that matches its gender. Ojo is masculine and pierna is feminine. As for derecha, it depends on if it's a noun or an adjective. If you're saying "to the right" it is a noun and you will always use derecha (with an a). If it is an adjective like the right leg, it will have to match in number and gender from derecho, derecha, derechos, derechas. This is singular feminine (pierna) so you use derecha. I hope this helped.

I know this video is a bit older, but maybe someone can help explain this. If we say “Juan likes Maria” - “A Juan le cae bien Maria” why don’t we use the personal “a” before Maria?
@QrooSpanish
@QrooSpanish 10 ай бұрын
The personal A is only used when the person is the object of the sentence, not the subject. In that sentence, Maria is actually the subject. It literally says, "Maria falls well to Juan." Juan is the object of the sentence.
