I was at a latino festival and a guy was getting ready to sing a song. He said "espero que les guste". For a couple of seconds I thought "guste??" Then it clicked it was sunjunctive. First time I noticed gustar used that way. It instantly stuck in my head.
@stephenkebbell70823 ай бұрын
In fact, I'm surprised that he didn't say "Que les guste". Often the "Espero" when it's obvious, it's omitted completely.

We know that subjunctive is used for wishes, doubts, etc and this lesson clearly explains "the change in subject rule" when using "esperar" for "hope". But one can be tempted to also apply the change in subject rule when expressing doubt, which always triggers the subjunctive.

Hi Qroo Paul. This is another extremely useful lesson. I greatly appreciate how you combined chunks of earlier lessons and cleverly incorporated those in this lesson. HOWEVER.... in conversation, you'll often hear "Espero que + subjunctive", not only do they omit "Yo" they'll omit "Espero" too. So you'll often hear and say ... Que tengas buen día (common parting phrase) Que tengas suerte (Anticipation) Que te guste (humble) Que cantes bien (bit harsh) Que vaya con Dios (at least in Guatemala) Etc.

Espero regresar en Espana en 2023. Espero que Harry pueda vivir en America Latina en el futuro. By the way 'ojala' can also be used for 'I hope' and is followed with or without 'que' and by the subjunctive, as I'm sure you know. But I have seen it translated into our tongue more as 'hopefully', which means pretty much the same in my book. It derives from the Moorish occupation of Spain the Arabic 'insha Allah' (God willing), which, oddly enough, is mostly used as a future marker in Arabic. (I don't even know if Arabic has a subjunctive mood. My Arabic is very rudimentary).
@AriesMars Жыл бұрын
but not only ojala comes from arabic, we have other words in spanish like almohada - pillow alcoba - bedroom alcohol - Here you have an official website of the Andalusian government in Spanish and it shows more words bit.ly/41fd4om

Good to have you back Paul! Quick question. I am practicing the sentence "Gracias por traerme mi comida" why is the infinitive triggered here? I got this sentence from a machine translation. I eat at a Mexican taco stand often and the woman brings me my food. I use this sentence to thank her. But I don't really understand why my machine translator makes traerme an infinitive? Is this at all related to the pattern of espero + infinitive? I am trying to say thanks for bringing me my food. Thanks for this great channel, I watch all your videos and give them all a like.
@QrooSpanish2 жыл бұрын
Hi Eric. The inifintive is used after prepositions and POR is a preposition. The sentence starter is GRACIAS POR..thanks for. You could insert a noun or a verb in the infinitive: Gracias por la comida. Thanks for the food. Gracias por decirme la verdad. Thanks for telling me the truth. Gracias por traerme la comida. Thanks for bringing me the food -- which. although grammatically correct, sounds odd in Spanish. In stores or restaurants, you could say something like gracias por atenderme -- or if they are super great, gracias por atenderme tan bien.
@elisabethsanchez918211 ай бұрын
In the example where u said “espero que deje de llover pronto” could detener or parar be used instead of dejar de?
@YoelMonsalve Жыл бұрын
Guys, if you are getting trouble with some Spanish phrase, just try it with an alternative translation. Example: "a house that faces the lake", ... this could be said as: "una casa que *de la cara* al lago", or much simpler: "una casa enfrente del lago" (in front of the lake) 😊.
