Thank you for your tutorial but how do you make to don't have the dynamic link between the map and the layout with the first map window impacted by moving the zoom ?

I am loving these videos. Thank you so much. I am having a problem with my XYZ tiles though. I went to load my previous lesson for this lesson and none of the Google/OpenStreetMap layers will load - I just get a single colour background. The same happens when I try to add the tiles to a new map. Suggestions?

Hi Michelle! Sorry to hear you're having problems and thank you for your kind comments. It may sound stupid but if you've not closed and reopened QGIS, this can sometimes make a difference because all GIS environments have bugs. The next thing I would try is to delete the layer and then go to project -> properties (or ctrl+shift+p) and select CRS on the left hand menu. Change the CRS to WGS84 and then retry adding. The CRS referes to the coordinate reference system which defines how our 2D map relates to the 3D globe. I was hoping to avoid it in the early lessons because you could make a full course on it but we will probably be covering it next week in greater depth.

Hey! Loving the lessons so far, thank you so so much. I am having some trouble though. When I finish the lesson I save my work but then when I try reopening it in QGIS it says there are unavailable layers and its just not opening my previous project. So, I am having trouble opening up my work from lesson 4 to do this lesson. Is there another way to save it properly and opening again in QGIS to continue working on it?

Hi Amelia, it sounds like you've created scratch files (temporary files) rather than creating permanent files. Unfortunately these disappear after you close GIS. To make sure you save permanent files, you need to make sure you specify an output pathway when you perform any operations. This is the equivalent of a save as. If you accidentally create temporary files (a small symbol appears next to the layer name) then you can right click on the layer and click export->save as... and resave them as permanent files. Again you will only be able to do this before you leave that session in QGIS.

HI!! I'm loving your videos, so clear and helpful. i do have a problem though, when i tried to export that final map to a pdf everything on "map 1" sorta disappeard and "map 2" was ok, i tried a couple of things but no luck, how could we save the final map? Thanks!!

Hi Carla, did you lock the map before moving QGIS for map 2. You need to lock it using the padlock in the top right corner. You also need to make sure that you lock your layers and layers styles. This can be found in the Layers section of item description (make sure map 1 is selected). Once you click lock layers you will have the option to lock layer styles. Once you've done this you can then change things for map 2. If the changes don't happen automatically, click the refresh button on the top toolbar.

I'm having an issue. I'm working with a U.S. map where you need two different coordinate reference systems to get the two non-contiguous states to not appear too distored from the main map. Is there any way to do this?
@timawbery73973 жыл бұрын
Hi Geoff, you are unable to work in two different coordinate reference systems at the same time in QGIS and this isn't something that I'd recommend doing in general. I would suggest that if some of the standard projections (UTM zones etc) then you make a custom projection that focuses on the centre of your 2 states and preserves the geometric property which which is most important to you (presumably area if you are worrying about looks).
@DM317023 жыл бұрын
@@timawbery7397 i was able to figure somethung else out. In the layout you can make a map with a different projection than the main map, and then simply lock it. It's a bit more work, but it works.
