I play in a Yacht Rock band here in Connecticut, and we do this song and many others in this vein. I don't think enough musicians these days have a true appreciation for how musical and challenging this genre is. I'm in my early 50's so it's probably more nostalgic for me because I grew up in the 70's. Thanks Dave for being such a fantastic resource!

The only other I can think of is Marc Jordan's "Only Fools" from is Debut lp produced by Gary Katz. Works really well there as well. Any other examples comrades ?

Excellent Dave, Thanks, Great lesson, I use a harmonizer, and wow, does that fill it in,, People love to hear this stuff from the 70's,, Brings back many memories, and like a lot of songs , you could name where you were when you first heard it. oh, to go back in music time 40 years ago, So much superior to todays plain/ flat meaningless " music " and I use that term lightly !
@miscellanyman2635 жыл бұрын
It was that period of the 70’s with Ambrosia, Player, Pablo Cruise and Little River Band, all of whom had “that sound” which made them sound similar. “Magnet & Steel” (Walter Egan): I always thought was Fleetwood Mac! lol. Great stuff here, Dave! 😎

Props once again, Dave. I commend you for the wonderfully entertaining and informative tutorials on music that form chapters of some of we old guy's social life from decades ago. Appreciate your sharing all this great knowledge. As someone below opined, the music of Player, Ambrosia with David Pack, Pablo Cruise and other similar groups deserve to be resuscitated as you do when you serve up a lesson. For a good number of guitar hackers, the acoustic guitar is the instrument of choice no matter whether the original recording featured electric guitars. If you get the right chords, proper voicings, and the added embellishment of lead fills or riffs from the tune, it can be 7th Heaven. Rock on......

I really dig this song and have for decades. And usually I wouldnt want to change from the original key on such a classic tune, but in this case I agree that it does seem to ring better in 'A' on the acoustic. It helps when trying to sing those high notes too.

I remember when Howard Stern went ballistic on Richard Christy for pranking him... he said "you've been Richard Christie'd..." and Howard was pissed and sent him to the hospital and threatened to fire him. It was ... well.. funny and not funny. Anyway, dude you are a great guitar teacher. I've been at it for over 50 years. Even though I'm an Eddie Van Halen clone, I love the songs that were popular when I was young and innocent. Player, Hues, all of them.. so, so many.. ELO... I've been searching ALL OVER for the correct version of "Rock the Boat" it's got some very cool chord progressions just like "Baby come back" ... and I know these songs word-for-word, and i can actually sing well, I just can't find the right chord progressions. I could beat myself up like I did when I was 18 playing 24 hours a day, but I'd rather just SEE someone play it correctly. That's all it would take. The covers on youtube are downright embarrassing.
