It’s the best and fastest way to learn. We’re a bad judge and trainer for our voice.

Hmmm. I got Mathilde Marchesi's bel canto book for Christmas from my mother and father in law. Lesson #1? Balanced onset "avoiding all jerkiness as well as effort. " I tend to have straight tone for a split second, followed by vibrato. I guess that is why I am going to have to practice!

I discovered it when I sat and played piano. It's a natural lean when you focus in the "right" spot. You do a diaphragm breath then appoggio. Diaphragm breathing is only one part of singing this is the missing piece of the puzzle. This is why so many singers push cause they can't find this. It's a lean, not a push.

I just don't understand the "lean" part, like how do you lean?

Hey, wouldn't a "clean closure" encourage glottal onsets? It sounded to me like some of those where glottals. Would be thankful for clarification :-)

Isivaa Sanaru, What you say is correct. Vocal pedogogy has become highly political in regards to terms and Ideas. Even the word onset is a reaction against the term attack because progressives "feel" that it had negative connotations. Resultingly certain issues are avoided today within this topic. Many factors effect the attack/onset of the sound. Approximation/ cord closure are one of this factors which can be viewed as muscular coordinations within the larynx that have nothing to do with " appoggio". There is a relationship between the appoggio and the adduction but this is just a relationship.

Good job! Most of things are true about appoggio here but somethings are still incomplete in appoggio term! You are teaching your student in Arturo Melocchi's way of singing which starts from F! And Melocchi's students had same problem with appoggio which is about lower notes below F they were sounding great with full connection with chiaroscuro but when they wanted to go back to lower notes specially below F their voices were so chesty and weak ! The best examplele which i give you is lower D in Nessun dorma! All of them sing low D not like higher one D4 for tenors i mean ... and of course one more thing about Melocchi 's way is about lowered larynx which is necessary but not with yawn muscles rather with great support as Marylin Horn said "if diphragm works perfectely ,larynx goes down effortlessy...nevertheless you are a good teacher

And of coures if you hear to your student which is of course so good, you can see how her low notes which she starts with are weak and with less power as other not are
